is overturned and in danger, then is the great demonstration of patience and gratitude. For this reason indeed Job was crowned from this, and stopped the shameless mouth of the devil, and showed clearly that not even when he was prospering was he thankful on account of his wealth, but on account of his great love for God. But see for what things he gives thanks: not for earthly and perishable things, such as for rule and power and glory (for these are worthy of no account), but for the things that are truly good, for faith and for boldness; and with how great a disposition he gives thanks; for he did not say, "To God," but, "To my God"; which the prophets also do, making what is common their own. And what wonder, if the prophets do? For God Himself is seen continually doing this in the case of His servants, calling Himself in a special way the God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob. That your faith is proclaimed in the whole world. What then? Did the whole earth hear of the faith of the Romans? The whole, from that time; and nothing is unlikely; for the city was not obscure, but as if set upon a summit, it was conspicuous for all things. But consider for me the power of the preaching, how in a short time through tax collectors and fishermen it took hold of the very chief of cities, and Syrian men became teachers and instructors of Romans. He testifies, therefore, to two of their right actions: both that they believed, and that they believed with boldness, and with so much of it that the report about them took hold of the whole earth. For your faith, he says, is proclaimed in the whole world; faith, not wranglings of words nor disputes nor syllogisms; and yet there were many hindrances there to the teaching. For having just received the rule of the world, they were high-minded, and lived with wealth and luxury, and fishermen brought the preaching, Jews and from Jews, a nation hated and abominable to all, and they were commanded to worship the Crucified One, who was brought up in Judea; and with the doctrine the teachers also announced a strict life to men practiced in luxury and fluttered by present things. And those who proclaimed it were poor and unlearned, of no family and from no family. But none of these things hindered the course of the word; so great was the power of the Crucified One, as to carry the word about everywhere. For it is proclaimed, he says, in the whole world. And he did not say, "is made known," 60.402 but, "is proclaimed," as if everyone had them on their lips. To the Thessalonians, then, testifying to this, he also adds another thing; for having said, "From you sounded out the word of God," he added, "So that we need not to speak anything." For the disciples were placed in the rank of teachers, instructing all through their boldness, and drawing them to themselves. For the preaching did not stop anywhere, but more vehemently than fire it overran the whole world. But here only so much, that "It is proclaimed." He said well, that "It is proclaimed," showing that one must neither add to nor take away from the things spoken; for this is the work of a messenger, to convey only the things that were said. For this reason also the priest is called a messenger, because he announces not his own things, but the things of Him who sent him. And yet Peter preached there, but he also considers Peter's achievements his own; so, as I have already said, he was in the highest degree free from all envy. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the Gospel of His Son. 2. The words of apostolic affection, the declaration of a fatherly care. But what is it that he says, and for what reason does he call God as witness? His discourse was about his disposition. Since, therefore, he had not yet seen them, for this reason he called no man as witness, but Him who enters into hearts. For since he was saying, "I love you," and made the sign of this to be his continual prayer, and his wish to come to them, and not even this was evident, he has recourse to a trustworthy witness. Will any one of us be able to boast that he remembers the fullness of the Church when praying at home? I think not. But Paul not for one city, but for

Καλῶς εἶπεν, ὅτι Καταγγέλλεται, δεικνὺς ὅτι οὐδὲν ἔδει προσθεῖναι τοῖς εἰρημένοις οὐδὲ ἀφελεῖν· ἀγγέλου γὰρ τοῦτο ἔργον ἐστὶ, τὸ μόνα τὰ λεγόμενα διακομίζειν. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο καὶ ὁ ἱερεὺς ἄγγελος καλεῖται, ὅτι οὐ τὰ ἑαυτοῦ, ἀλλὰ τὰ τοῦ πέμποντος ἀναγγέλλει. Καίτοι γε Πέτρος ἐκήρυξεν ἐκεῖ, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰ ἐκείνου ἑαυτοῦ ἡγεῖται· οὕτως, ὅπερ ἔφθην εἰπὼν, μεθ' ὑπερβολῆς ἁπάσης βασκανίας ἦν καθαρός.
