receives the Phoenicians, lies the city Dan, formerly so named from the tribe of Dan, when for no short time they alone of the whole nation were wandering, and at last having taken possession of the places there, they were established with difficulty, and having built a city on their highest mountains, they gave it the name of their tribal leader, and this was the furthest border of Judea toward Phoenicia. This city, Herod the Great rebuilt a long time after, and renamed it Caesarea Philippi, but now it is called Paneas; for having set up a statue of Pan in it, they changed the name of the city to this. In this Paneas one of the two sources of the Jordan is born, being called Dan even now from its old name; for the other, which is called Ior, a certain hill of the same mountain sends forth far from it, about 160 stadia; from each of which a river flows, the one called Iorates, the other Danites; which, having been carried through the mountain, when they descend into the plain, there they now come together and form one very great river, the Jordan, mixing at the same time both their stream and their name; which passes through the lake of Tiberias, cutting it in the middle, and flowing through the whole of it in its own course until it falls upon the opposite land, being equal to itself and very similar; and from there now having been carried through Palestine, it all falls into the so-called Dead Sea and disappears.” 11 Cod. Par. 1630: The river Jordan is so called because of the mixing together of two, both Ior and Dan. At which time also Melchizedek was known, a pious man, descended from the race of Sidus, son of Aegyptus, king of Libya; who, having become a priest and king of the Canaanites, built a city on the mountain called Sion, and having called it Jerusalem, which is city of peace, he reigned in it for 113 years, as Josephus relates. (2) At this time two cities were destroyed, Sodom and Gomorrah, when divine fire broke down upon them, because they were insolent to the strangers passing by. 3. Abraham begot Isaac by Sarah and Ishmael by the handmaid Hagar; from whom both Saracens and Ishmaelites are named. Isaac begot Jacob, who was called Israel, and Esau, from whom Isaurians and Israelites were renamed. Jacob begot 12 sons; from these the present tribes of Israel and the race of priests were demonstrated, and those formerly called Hebrews were then named Jews. 4. At which time Hesiod, a wise man, was known among the Greeks, who translated the Assyrian letters into the Greek tongue. Then also in the land of the Carians there was a certain man named Endymion, who through mystical prayers wished to learn the name of God from the moon, and having learned it through a dream, he died. And there is a myth up to the present day, that his remains are moved throughout the land of the Carians. The myth says that he is loved by the Moon. 5. And Jacob went into Egypt to his son Joseph who had become great. Joseph, having reached 100 years, passed from this life. And Levi begot Abrakaad, and he Amra, and he Moses and Aaron. And there are 505 years from Abraham to Moses, and 4204 years from Adam to Moses. And Moses, having been taken up by the daughter of Pharaoh, was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians; and having become 80 years old he departed from Egypt, having gathered the Israelites, being not less than 600 thousand, after 36 years, and he went through the Red Sea carrying also the bones of Joseph; and having philosophized with the people for 40 years, he died at 120 years of age, leaving Joshua the son of Nun as his successor; who, having taught the people for 27 years, died, being 110 years of age. Καὶ μῦθός ἐστι μέχρι τοῦ νῦν, τὸ τούτου λείψανον δονεῖσθαι κατὰ τὴν Καρῶν χώραν. Ὁ δὲ μῦθός φησιν αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τῆς Σελήνης φιλεῖσθαι. 5. Ἰακὼβ δὲ ἐπορεύθη εἰς Αἴγυπτον πρὸς τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν Ἰωσὴφ μέγαν γενόμενον. Ἰωσὴφ πρὸς τοὺς ρʹ γεγονὼς ἐνιαυτοὺς μετήλλαξε τὸν βίον.
