in the last days the mountain of the Lord shall be manifest; and the house of God on the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills, and all the nations shall come unto it; and many nations shall go, and shall say: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will announce to us his way, and we will walk in it; for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord in Jerusalem. And he shall judge between the nations, and he shall judge many people; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into sickles; and nation shall not lift up sword against nation; neither shall they learn war any more.” And what is similar to all this, and in the same words, is thus 11.85 written in Micah: “And it shall be in the last days that the mountain of the Lord shall be manifest, prepared on the tops of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and peoples shall hasten to it, and many nations shall go, and shall say: Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob, and they will show us his way; and we will walk in his paths; for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge between many peoples, and he will rebuke strong nations even afar off, and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into sickles; and nation shall no more lift up sword against nation, and they shall learn war no more.” Furthermore in the first of Chronicles the psalm appointed in the hand of Asaph, and of his brethren, to praise the Lord, whose beginning is: “Give thanks and call upon him in his name,” in most respects at the beginning is equivalent to the 104th psalm, until: “And do my prophets no harm;” and after this to the 5th, whose beginning is something close to: “Sing to the Lord, all the earth;” until: “For he comes to judge the earth.” But since it would be a lengthy matter to set down the very words, we have said these things briefly for the matter at hand. And you will find about not carrying a burden on the Sabbath day written not only in Moses, but also in Jeremiah. And concerning the Passover and priestly laws you will find in both Moses and in the last parts of Ezekiel. And I would have set down the very words, and many others, if I did not see the time for writing to you cut short by the fewness of our days in Nicomedia. In addition to these things you said that the character of the phrasing also differs; which did not seem so at all to me. And so I have made my defense on these points; but it would have been preferable, after the accusations, to speak an encomium of the Scripture concerning Susanna, going through each word, and showing the excellence of the thoughts; which one of those who have studied divine things with a love of learning and sufficient ability will be able to compose separately. I have replied these things to the, as you say, objections, and I write in return; if only I might also be able to instruct! but for now I do not grant so much to myself. My lord and holy brother Ambrosius, who has labored with me in the dictation of the letter, and was present for all of it, correcting it where he wished, greets you. And his most faithful wife Marcella greets you, together with their children, and Anicetus. You, greet our good pope Apollinarius, and those who love us.
