of Bishop John of the Constantinopolitans; and, as it seems, it has not been accomplished. Therefore, I wrote again through the bishops and presbyters, being very concerned for the peace of the church, through which also our empire is at peace, that you would deign to command the bishops of the East to assemble in Thessalonica. For the bishops of our West, having selected men uninclined to evil and falsehood, have sent five bishops, two presbyters, and one deacon of the greatest church of the Romans. Deign to care for them with all kinds of honors, so that, either being persuaded that Bishop John has been justly expelled, they may teach me to withdraw from his communion; or having convicted the bishops of the East of willful malice, they may turn you away from their communion. For what the Westerners think 22 about Bishop John, from all the letters written to me, I have subjoined two, equivalent to them all, the letter of the bishop of Rome and of Aquileia. But I beseech your Clemency before all things, deem it right that Theophilus of Alexandria be present even unwillingly, because of whom it is said that all the evils have chiefly occurred; so that the synod of the bishops who have come, being in no way hindered, may award the peace fitting for our times." <CHAPTER ∆ʹ> Therefore, the party of the holy bishop Aemilius of Beneventum and Cythegius and Gaudentius, along with the presbyters Valentinian and Boniface, having received the letters of the emperor Honorius and of Innocentius and of the Italian bishops, Chromatius of Aquileia and Venerius of Milan and the rest, and the memorandum of the whole synod of the West, were sent to Constantinople with public warrants along with the party of the bishops Cyriacus and Demetrius and Palladius and Eulysius. And the memorandum held that John should not enter into judgment, unless first both the church and communion be restored to him, so that, having no reason to postpone, he might enter the council of his own accord. Therefore, having gone to Constantinople, they returned after four months, relating Babylonian affairs; saying "We were detained while sailing past Greece towards Athens by a certain wretched chiliarch, who immediately attached a centurion to us, not permitting us to put in at Thessalonica;" for their purpose was to first deliver the letters there to Bishop Anysius. "Therefore, having put us," he says, "onto two ships, he sent us away. But when a violent south wind arose, 23 fasting for three <ἡμερῶν> we sailed through the Aegean sea and the straits, and on the third day at the twelfth hour we anchored before the city near the suburbs of Victor. In which place, having been detained by those who managed the harbors, we went backwards (but by whose command we did not know), and having been shut up in a coastal fortress of Thrace, called Athyra, and being tormented from there, the Romans in one small house, and the party of Cyriacus in different ones, so that we did not even have a servant for service. And when the letters were demanded, we did not give them, saying "How is it possible for us, being ambassadors, not to deliver the letters of the emperor and of the bishops to the emperor himself?" Since, therefore, we persisted in not giving them, first Patricius a notary came to us, then some others, finally there came a certain man in charge of a numerus, Valerianus by name, a Cappadocian, and having broken the thumb of Bishop Marianus, he took away the sealed letter of the emperor along with the other letters. Therefore, when the second day came, they sent to us, whether those of the emperor's court, or the party of Atticus, we do not know (for he was said to have leapt upon the throne of the church), offering us three thousand coins, asking that we be persuaded to enter into communion with Atticus, passing over in silence the case of John. Not being persuaded by them, we remained praying, so as to accomplish nothing peaceful, 24 even if we could reach our churches without danger, seeing such great
