"The divine scriptures teach us, we confess one Holy Spirit, the "one who made new both the holy men of the Old Testament and the "divine teachers of the New Testament which is now proclaimed; one and only catho "lic and apostolic Church, which can never be destroyed, even if the whole "world should plot to war against it, and victorious over every "most impious rebellion of the heterodox, since its Master makes us confi "dent by crying out: " Be of good cheer, I 23 "have overcome the world ". After this, we know the resurrection from the dead, "of which our Lord Jesus Christ became the firstfruits, a body "having put on in truth and not in appearance from the Theotokos Mary, at the con "clusion of the ages for the abolition of sin having come among the race "of men, was crucified and died, but not on this account "having become less than His own divinity, rose from the dead, was taken up "into the heavens, and is seated at the right hand of the Majesty . "These things I have in part inscribed in the letter, thinking it burdensome, as I said, to write each point with "precision, because not even "your sacred diligence has missed these things. These things we teach, these things "we preach, these are the apostolic doctrines of the Church, for which "we even die, caring little for those who try to force us to renounce them, "even if they compel us through tortures, not the hope that is in them "turning away from. Having become adversaries of these things, Arius and "Achillas and their companions, enemies of the truth, were cast out of the "Church, having become alienated from our pious teaching, according to "the blessed Paul who says: " if anyone preaches to you a gospel contrary to "what you received, let him be accursed " even if he pretends to be an angel from heaven, but also " if anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree "with the sound words of our Lord Jesus "Christ and the teaching that is in accordance with godliness, he is puffed up, "knowing nothing " and so forth. 24 "Therefore let none of you receive these men who have been anathematized by the brotherhood, "nor tolerate the things said or written by "them; for the sorcerers lie in all things, they will never speak the truth. "For they go about the cities, eager for nothing else than under the "pretext of friendship and in the name of peace through hypocrisy and "flattery to give and receive letters, in order to deceive through "these means the few silly women who have been deceived by them, laden "with sins, and so forth. "Therefore these men who have dared such things against Christ, who "on the one hand have publicly defamed Christianity, and on the other are ambitious to make a display "of it in the law courts, who have stirred up persecution against us in "peace as much as in them lies, who the ineffable mystery "of Christ's generation have enervated, turn away from these men, "beloved and like-minded brethren, and vote with us against their mad "audacity, in imitation of our indignant fellow-ministers "who wrote to me against them and to the tome "subscribed; which I have also sent to you through my son Apis "the deacon, from all of Egypt and the Thebaid, and from "Libya and the Pentapolis and Syria and also Lycia and Pam "phylia, Asia, Cappadocia and the other surrounding regions; in "imitation of which I am confident to receive the same from you. For while many reme 25 "dies have been supplied by me for those who were harmed, this also has been found as a healing "remedy for the people deceived by them, being persuaded also by the "assents of our fellow-ministers, and eager through this to come to repentance. Greet one another with the brotherhood among you. "I pray that you may fare well in the Lord, beloved. May I have joy "of your Christ-loving soul. "The heretics who have been anathematized are, from the presbyters, "Arius; from the deacons, Achillas, Euzoius, Aithales, Lucius, Sarmates, Julius, Menas, another Arius, Helladius." He also wrote in harmony with these things to Philogonius, the president of the church of the Antiochians, and to Eustathius, who at that time was entrusted with governing Beroea, and to the
