Have you seen such solicitude? Have you seen such ineffable love for mankind? Before these days He ascended into heaven, He took up the royal throne, He has received the seat at the right hand of the Father, and today He grants us the advent of the Holy Spirit, and through Him He supplies us with countless good things from the heavens. For what, tell me, of the things that sustain our salvation has not been arranged for us through the Spirit? Through Him we are set free from slavery, to free50.464 dom we are called, to adoption as sons we are raised up, and from above, so to speak, we are remolded, we lay aside the heavy and foul-smelling burden of our sins; through the Holy Spirit we see choirs of priests, we have orders of teachers; from this source come both gifts of revelations, and graces of healings; and all the rest of the things that are accustomed to adorn the Church of God have their supply from here. And Paul cries out, saying: All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, distributing to each one individually as He wills. As He wills, he says, not as He is commanded; distributing, not being distributed; exercising authority, not subject to authority. For the same authority that he testified belongs to the Father, this same authority Paul also ascribes to the Holy Spirit. And just as he says of the Father: But it is God who works all things in all, so also of the Holy Spirit: But all these things, he says, are the work of one and the same Spirit, distributing to each one individually as He wills. Have you seen perfect authority? For those whose essence is one, it is clear that their authority is also one; and for those whose dignity is of equal honor, their power and authority are also one. Through Him we have found release from our sins; through Him we have washed away every stain; through His gift, we who have run to grace have become angels from men, not having changed our nature, but what is much more wonderful, remaining in our hu50.465 man nature, we display the conduct of angels. For such is the power of the Holy Spirit; and just as this perceptible fire, when it takes softened clay, shows it to be a strong potsherd; so indeed the fire of the Spirit, when it takes a well-disposed soul, even if it finds it more softened than clay, makes it stronger than iron; and the one who a little while before was defiled with the mire of sins, it suddenly reveals as brighter than the sun. And teaching us this, the blessed Paul cried out, saying: Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor covetous, nor thieves, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

And having enumerated, so to speak, all the forms of wickedness, and having taught that those who are liable for such sins become aliens to the kingdom, he immediately added: And such were some of you, but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified. How and in what way? Tell me; for this is the question. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, he says, and in the Spirit of our God. Have you seen the power of the Holy Spirit, beloved? Have you seen that the Holy Spirit has made all this wickedness disappear, and has suddenly raised to the highest honor those who were formerly given over by their own sins?

2. Who then could worthily mourn and lament for those who blaspheme

by attempting the dignity of the Spirit, who, like madmen, cannot bear to refrain from their own ingratitude even in the face of the greatness of His benefits, but dare to do everything against their own salvation, alienating Him, as far as it is in their power, from the Lordly dignity, and attempting to bring Him down to the rank of created things? I would like to ask them, for what reason, O you men, do you display so great a war against the dignity of the Spirit? or rather, against their own salvation,

Καὶ ἀπαριθμησάμενος ἅπαντα ὡς εἰπεῖν τῆς κακίας τὰ εἴδη, καὶ διδάξας, ὅτι οἱ τοιούτοις ὑπεύθυνοι ἁμαρτήμασιν ἀλλότριοι τῆς βασιλείας γίνονται, εὐθέως ἐπήγαγε· Καὶ ταῦτά τινες ἦτε, ἀλλ' ἀπελούσασθε, ἀλλ' ἡγιάσθητε, ἀλλ' ἐδικαιώθητε. Πῶς καὶ τίνι τρόπῳ; εἰπέ· τοῦτο γάρ ἐστι τὸ ζητούμενον. Ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, φησὶ, καὶ ἐν τῷ Πνεύματι τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν. Εἶδες τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος τὴν δύναμιν, ἀγαπητέ; εἶδες ὅτι τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον πᾶσαν τὴν κακίαν ταύτην ἠφάνισε, καὶ τοὺς πρότερον παραδεδομένους ὑπὸ τῶν οἰκείων ἁμαρτημάτων, ἀθρόον εἰς τὴν ἀνωτάτω τιμὴν ἀνήγαγε;

βʹ.
