the bridegroom, 31.728 and then they will fast in those days; and what follows. TO THE GALATIANS. So, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman; stand firm, therefore, in the freedom with which Christ has set us free, and do not be entangled again in a yoke of slavery.

RULE 15. That one must not, by trusting in the good deeds of others, neglect one's own.

Chapter 1. MATTHEW. Produce therefore fruit worthy of repentance, and do not

presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ RULE 16. That they are in no way benefited who live with those who are pleasing to God, and

do not make right their own mindset, even if in appearance they preserve a likeness to them.

Chapter 1. MATTHEW. Then the kingdom of heaven will be likened to ten

virgins, who, having taken their lamps, went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were wise, and the five foolish. The foolish ones, having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them; but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. To which he adds a little later concerning the foolish: Later the other virgins also come, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us.’ But he answered and said, ‘I say to you, I do not know you.’ LUKE. I say to you, on that night there will be two on one bed; one will be taken, and the other will be left. Two will be grinding together; one will be taken, and the other will be left. And answering, they say to him, ‘Where, Lord?’ And he said to them, ‘Where the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together.’

RULE 17. That one must, recognizing from the characteristics declared to us by

Scripture what kind the present time is, arrange one's own affairs with this in mind.

Chapter 1. MATTHEW. Now from the fig tree learn the parable. When its branch

has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So also you, when you see all these things, know that it is near, at the doors. LUKE. When you see a cloud rising from the west, you immediately say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be a heat wave,’ and it happens. 31.729 Hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of the earth and of the sky, but how is it that you do not discern this time? 1 CORINTHIANS. The time is short from now on, so that those who have wives should be as though they had none; and those who weep as though they did not weep; and those who rejoice as though they did not rejoice; and those who buy, as though they did not possess; and those who use the world, as not abusing it; for the form of this world is passing away.

RULE 18. That one must do the commandments of God in the way that the Lord

commanded. For he who errs in the manner of the work, even if he seems to do the commandment, is rejected by God.

Chapter 1. LUKE. He said also to the one who had invited him: When you give a luncheon or

a dinner, do not call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives

παρθένοις, αἵτινες, λαβοῦσαι τὰς λαμπάδας αὑτῶν, ἐξῆλθον εἰς ἀπάντησιν τοῦ νυμφίου. Πέντε δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἦσαν φρόνιμοι, καὶ αἱ πέντε μωραί. Αἵτινες μωραὶ, λαβοῦσαι τὰς λαμπάδας αὑτῶν, οὐκ ἔλαβον μεθ' ἑαυτῶν ἔλαιον· αἱ δὲ φρόνιμοι ἔλαβον ἐν τοῖς ἀγγείοις αὑτῶν μετὰ τῶν λαμπάδων αὑτῶν. τῆς Γραφῆς ἰδιωμάτων γνωρίζοντας, ὁποῖός ἐστιν, ἐστοχασμένως τούτου τὰ καθ' ἑαυ τοὺς διατιθέναι.

Κεφάλ. Αʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Ἀπὸ δὲ τῆς συκῆς μάθετε τὴν παραβολήν. Ὅταν ἤδη ὁ

κλάδος αὐτῆς γένηται ἁπαλὸς, καὶ τὰ φύλλα ἐκφύῃ, γινώσκετε, ὅτι ἐγ γὺς τὸ θέρος. Οὕτω καὶ ὑμεῖς, ὅταν ἴδητε ταῦτα πάντα, γινώσκετε, ὅτι ἐγγύς ἐστιν ἐπὶ θύραις. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Ὅταν ἴδητε τὴν νεφέλην ἀνατέλλουσαν ἀπὸ δυσμῶν, εὐθέως λέγετε, ὅτι Ὄμ βρος ἔρχεται· καὶ γίνεται οὕτως. Καὶ ὅταν νότον πνέοντα, λέγετε, ὅτι Καύσων ἔσται· καὶ γίνεται. 31.729 Ὑποκριταὶ, τὸ πρόσωπον τῆς γῆς καὶ τοῦ οὐρα νοῦ οἴδατε δοκιμάζειν, τὸν δὲ καιρὸν τοῦτον πῶς οὐ δοκιμάζετε; ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡ. αʹ. Ὁ καιρὸς συν εσταλμένος ἐστὶ τὸ λοιπὸν, ἵνα καὶ οἱ ἔχοντες γυναῖκας ὡς μὴ ἔχοντες ὦσι· καὶ οἱ κλαίοντες ὡς μὴ κλαίοντες· καὶ οἱ χαίροντες ὡς μὴ χαίροντες· καὶ οἱ ἀγοράζοντες, ὡς μὴ κατέχοντες· καὶ οἱ χρώμενοι τῷ κόσμῳ, ὡς μὴ καταχρώμενοι· παράγει γὰρ τὸ σχῆμα τοῦ κόσμου τούτου.

ΟΡΟΣ ΙΗʹ. Ὅτι δεῖ τὰς ἐντολὰς τοῦ Θεοῦ οὕτω ποιεῖν, ὡς ὁ Κύ ριος

προσέταξεν. Ὁ γὰρ περὶ τὸν τρόπον τῆς ἐρ γασίας διαπταίων, κἂν δόξῃ ποιεῖν τὴν ἐντολὴν, ἀδόκιμός ἐστι παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ.

δεῖπνον, μὴ φώνει τοὺς φίλους σου, μηδὲ τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου, μηδὲ τοὺς συγγενεῖς
