11 For consider with me the state of that life, as far as it is possible to consider it; for no word will be sufficient for us to describe its worth; but from what we hear, as through certain riddles, let us receive some faint impression of it: ‘Sorrow and grief and sighing,’ it says, ‘have fled away.’ What then could be more blessed than this life? There, there is no fear of poverty or disease; one does not see anyone doing wrong or being wronged, no one provoking or being provoked, no one being angry, no one being envious, no one burning with improper desire, no one grieving over the provision of necessities, no one struggling for rule and power; for the whole tempest of passions within us is extinguished and perishes, and all will be peace and gladness and joy, all calm and serene, all day and brightness and light, and not this present light, but another, as much more brilliant than this as this is brighter than a lamp; for there is no night there, nor the gathering of concealing clouds, nor does it burn and scorch bodies—for there is no night, nor evening; no frost, no heat, nor any other change of seasons, but another state of being, of such a kind that only those who are counted worthy will know; there is no old age there, nor the evils of old age, but all things of corruption are put out of the way, while incorruptible glory prevails everywhere. But what is greater than all these things is to enjoy communion with Christ continually, with angels, with archangels, with the powers above. Behold the heaven now and cross in your thought to the things above the heaven, consider the transformation of all creation; for it will not remain as it is, but will be much more beautiful and more radiant; what am I saying? and as great as the difference is between lead and gleaming gold, so much better will the state then be than this present state, as the blessed Paul also says: ‘that creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption.’ For now, since it partakes of corruption, it suffers many things which such bodies are likely to suffer; but then, having put off all these things, it will display an unspeakable beauty; for since it is about to receive incorruptible bodies, it too will finally be transformed for the better. Nowhere then is there strife and battle; for there is great harmony, as all the saints are always of one mind with one another. There is no fear there of the devil and the plots of demons, no threat of Gehenna, no death, not this present one, nor that one which is much more terrible than this, but all such fear is dissolved. And just as a royal child, formerly raised in a humble dwelling and under the fear of tutors, so that by lack of indulgence he might not become worse and unworthy of his paternal inheritance, when he must come to his royal dignity, having changed all those things at once, suddenly, with the purple robe and the diadem and the multitude of bodyguards, presides with great confidence, having cast off the humble and downcast things from his soul, and taken up other things in their place; so indeed it will also happen then to all the saints. And that these words are no boast, let us go in our minds to the mountain where Christ was transfigured; let us see him shining as he shone; and yet not even so did he show us the full brightness of the age to come. For that the vision was a condescension and not an exact display of the reality, is clear from the very words of the evangelist. For what does he say? ‘He shone like the sun.’ But the glory of incorruptible bodies does not emit so much light as this corruptible body [the sun], nor such a kind as can be comprehended by mortal eyes, but requires incorruptible and immortal eyes for the sight of it. But then on the mountain he revealed to them only as much as it was possible to see and not to overwhelm the sight of those who were seeing; and not even so did they bear it, but fell on their faces. But tell me: if someone brought you into a theater where all were sitting clad in golden robes, and in the midst of the multitude pointed out another made of precious stones, both his garments and the crown upon his head, and then promised to enroll you in that company,

11 Ἐννόησον γάρ μοι τῆς ζωῆς τὴν κατάστασιν ἐκείνης, καθ' ὅσον ἐννοῆσαι δυνατόν· πρὸς γὰρ τὴν ἀξίαν οὐδεὶς ἡμῖν ἀρκέσει λόγος· ἀλλ' ἐξ ὧν ἀκούομεν ὥσπερ διά τινων αἰνιγμάτων λάβωμέν τινα φαντασίαν αὐτῆς ἀμυδράν· «Ἀπέδρα, φησίν, ὀδύνη καὶ λύπη καὶ στεναγμός.» Τί οὖν ταύτης μακαριώτερον γένοιτ' ἂν τῆς ζωῆς; Οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκεῖ πενίαν δεδοικέναι καὶ νόσον· οὐκ ἔστιν ἀδικοῦντα οὐδ' ἀδικούμενον ἰδεῖν, οὐ παροξύνοντα καὶ παροξυνόμενον οὐκ ὀργιζόμενον, οὐ βασκαίνοντα, οὐκ ἐπιθυμίᾳ ἀτόπῳ φλεγόμενον, οὐχ ὑπὲρ τῆς τῶν ἀναγκαίων ἀλύοντα χορηγίας, οὐχ ὑπὲρ ἀρχῆς καὶ δυναστείας κοπτόμενον· πᾶσα γὰρ ἡ ζάλη τῶν ἐν ἡμῖν παθῶν σβεσθεῖσα ἀπόλλυται, καὶ πάντα εἰρήνη ἔσται καὶ εὐφροσύνη καὶ χαρά, πάντα εὔδια καὶ γαληνά, πάντα ἡμέρα καὶ λαμπρότης καὶ φῶς, καὶ οὐ τοῦτο τὸ νῦν, ἀλλ' ἕτερον τούτου τοσοῦτον λαμπρότερον ὅσον τοῦ λυχναίου τοῦτο φαιδρότερον· οὔτε γὰρ ἐκεῖ νύξ, οὔτε συνδρομὴ κρύπτεται νεφελῶν, οὐ κάει καὶ φλέγει σώματα οὔτε γὰρ νύξ, οὔτε ἑσπέρα· οὐ κρυμός, οὐ θάλπος, οὐκ ἄλλη τις τροπῶν μεταβολή, ἀλλ' ἑτέρα τις κατάστασις τοιαύτη, ἣν οἱ καταξιωθέντες εἴσονται μόνον· οὐκ ἔστι γῆρας ἐκεῖ καὶ τὰ τοῦ γήρως κακά, ἀλλὰ πάντα ἐκποδῶν γίνεται τὰ τῆς φθορᾶς, τῆς ἀφθάρτου δόξης κρατούσης πανταχοῦ. Τὸ δὲ τούτων ἁπάντων μεῖζον, τὸ τῆς πρὸς τὸν Χριστὸν ὁμιλίας ἀπολαύειν διηνεκῶς, μετὰ ἀγγέλων, μετὰ ἀρχαγγέλων, μετὰ τῶν ἀνωτέρω δυνάμεων. Ἴδε τὸν οὐρανὸν νῦν καὶ διάβηθι τῷ λογισμῷ πρὸς τὰ ὑπὲρ τὸν οὐρανόν, λογίσαι τῆς κτίσεως ἁπάσης τὸν μετασχηματισμόν· οὐ γὰρ τοιαύτη μενεῖ ἀλλὰ πολλῷ καλλίων ἔσται καὶ φαιδροτέρα· τί λέγω; καὶ ὅσῳ μολύβδου πρὸς χρυσὸν ἀποστίλβοντα τὸ μέσον, τοσούτῳ τῆς παρασκευῆς ἔσται ταύτης βελτίων ἡ τότε, καθὼς καὶ ὁ μακάριος Παῦλός φησιν· «ὅτι καὶ αὐτὴ ἡ κτίσις ἐλευθερωθήσεται ἀπὸ τῆς δουλείας τῆς φθορᾶς.» Νῦν μὲν γὰρ ἅτε φθορᾶς μετέχουσα, πολλὰ πάσχει ὅσα τὰ τοιαῦτα σώματα πάσχειν εἰκός· τότε δὲ πάντα ἀποδυσαμένη ταῦτα, ἄφατον ἐπιδείξεται τὴν εὐπρέπειαν· ἐπειδὴ γὰρ ἄφθαρτα μέλλει δέχεσθαι σώματα, καὶ αὐτὴ λοιπὸν ἐπὶ τὸ κρεῖττον μετασχηματισθήσεται. Οὐδαμοῦ τότε στάσις καὶ μάχη· πολλὴ γὰρ ἡ συμφωνία, τῶν ἁγίων πάντων ὁμογνωμονούντων ἀλλήλοις ἀεί. Οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκεῖ διάβολον δεῖσαι καὶ δαιμόνων ἐπιβουλάς, οὐ γεέννης ἀπειλήν, οὐ θάνατον, οὐ τοῦτον τὸν νῦν, οὐ τὸν πολλῷ τούτου χαλεπώτερον ἐκεῖνον, ἀλλὰ πᾶς ὁ τοιοῦτος λέλυται φόβος. Καὶ καθάπερ παιδίον βασιλικὸν πρότερον ἐν εὐτελεῖ τρεφόμενον οἰκήματι καὶ ὑπὸ φόβον ὂν παιδαγωγῶν, ὥστε μὴ τῇ ἀνέσει γενέσθαι χεῖρον καὶ τῆς πατρικῆς ἀνάξιον κληρονομίας, ἐπειδὰν εἰς τὸ βασιλικὸν ἐλθεῖν ἀξίωμα δέῃ, πάντα ἀθρόως ἐκεῖνα μεταμφιασάμενος, ἐξαίφνης, μετὰ τῆς ἁλουργίδος καὶ τοῦ διαδήματος καὶ τοῦ πλήθους τῶν δορυφόρων, μετὰ πολλῆς προκάθηται τῆς παρρησίας, τὰ ταπεινὰ καὶ κατηφῆ ῥίψας ἀπὸ τῆς ψυχῆς, καὶ ἕτερα ἀντ' ἐκείνων ἀναλαβών· οὕτω δὴ καὶ τότε συμβήσεται τοῖς ἁγίοις ἅπασιν. Καὶ ὅτι οὐ κόμπος τὰ ῥήματα, πορευθῶμεν ἐπὶ τὸ ὄρος τῷ λόγῳ, ἔνθα μετεμορφώθη Χριστός· ἴδωμεν αὐτὸν λάμποντα ὥσπερ ἔλαμψεν· καίτοι γε οὐδὲ οὕτως πᾶσαν ἡμῖν ὑπέδειξεν τὴν τοῦ μέλλοντος αἰῶνος λαμπρότητα. Ὅτι γὰρ συγκατάβασις τὸ φαινόμενον ἦν ἀλλ' οὐκ ἐπίδειξις τοῦ πράγματος ἀκριβής, ἀπ' αὐτῶν δῆλον τῶν ῥημάτων τοῦ εὐαγγελιστοῦ. Τί γάρ φησιν; «Ἔλαμψεν ὡς ὁ ἥλιος.» Ἡ δὲ τῶν ἀφθάρτων σωμάτων δόξα οὐ τοσοῦτον ἀφίησιν τὸ φῶς, ὅσον τοῦτο τὸ σῶμα τὸ φθαρτόν, οὐδὲ τοιοῦτον οἷον καὶ θνητοῖς ὄμμασι γενέσθαι χωρητόν, ἀλλὰ ἀφθάρτων καὶ ἀθανάτων δεόμενον ὀφθαλμῶν πρὸς τὴν θέαν αὐτοῦ. Τότε δὲ ἐπὶ τοῦ ὄρους τοσοῦτον αὐτοῖς ἀπεκάλυψεν, ὅσον ἰδεῖν δυνατὸν ἦν καὶ μὴ θλίψαι τὰς τῶν ὁρώντων ὄψεις· καὶ οὐδὲ οὕτως ἤνεγκαν ἀλλ' ἔπεσον ἐπὶ πρόσωπον. Εἰπέ μοι δέ· εἴ τίς σε εἰς θέατρον εἰσήγαγεν ἔνθα πάντες ἐκάθηντο χρυσᾶς ἀναβεβλημένοι στολάς, καὶ ἐν μέσῳ τῷ πλήθει ἕτερόν τινα ἐπέδειξεν ἀπὸ λίθων τιμίων, καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια καὶ τὸν στέφανον ἔχοντα τὸν ἐπὶ τῆς κεψαλῆς, εἶτά σε ἐπηγγέλλετο εἰς ἐκεῖνον κατατάξειν τὸν δῆμον,
