to enjoy. 2.9 All you, therefore, who have been deemed worthy to be enrolled in this heavenly book, bring an abundant faith and a strong mind. For the things that happen here require faith and the eyes of the soul, so that you do not attend only to what is seen, but from these things imagine what is not seen. For such are the eyes of faith; for just as the eyes of the body can see only those things that fall under sense-perception, so the eyes of faith do the opposite of those. For they behold none of the things that are seen, but they see the things not seen as though they were lying before their eyes. For this is faith: to attend to things not seen as if they were seen. "For," it says, "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." 2.10 What then is it that I am saying, and to what end have I said this: not to attend to things that are seen, but to possess spiritual eyes? So that when you see the font of waters and the hand of the priest touching your head, you may not think that that is merely water alone, nor that the hand of the high priest alone is laid upon your head. For it is not a man who accomplishes the rites being performed, but it is the grace of the Spirit that both sanctifies the nature of the waters and, with the hand of the priest, touches your head. Did I not say well that we have need of the eyes of faith for the belief in things not seen, so that we may suspect nothing of the senses? 2.11 For baptism is both a tomb and a resurrection; "For the old man is buried with sin and the new man rises, renewed in the image of his Creator." We strip off and we put on; we strip off the old garment, soiled by the multitude of sins, and we put on the new one, free from every stain. But what am I saying? We put on Christ himself. "For as many of you," it says, "as were baptized into Christ, have put on Christ." 2.12 But since the time is now at the doors when you are about to enjoy so many gifts, come, let us teach you, as far as is possible, the reasons for each of the things that happen, so that you may have knowledge and, receiving fuller assurance, thus depart from here. It is necessary, therefore, for you to know why, after the daily instruction, we send you over to the voices of those who exorcise you. For this does not happen simply or at random, but because you are about to receive the heavenly King as a resident; for this reason, after the admonition from us, those appointed for this task take you, and just as they would prepare a house for a king who is about to arrive, so they cleanse your mind through those fearful words, putting to flight every contrivance of the evil one, and preparing it to be worthy of the King's presence. For it is not possible, even if a demon is savage or harsh, not to depart from them with great haste after those fearful voices and the invocation of the common Master of all. Along with this, the rite itself also instills much reverence in the soul and leads it to much compunction. 2.13 And indeed, the wonderful and paradoxical thing is that every inequality and difference of ranks is here removed; for even if one happens to hold a worldly rank, or be conspicuous for wealth, or be proud of his noble birth and the glory of the present life, he too stands in the same way as the beggar and the one clothed in rags, and often one with his eyes gouged out and his leg maimed, and he is not displeased by what is happening; for he knows that in spiritual matters all these things are driven out and only a well-disposed soul is sought. 2.14 And those voices and invocations, fearful and wonderful, have so much profit; but the posture of bare feet and outstretched hands shows us something else. Just as those who endure this bodily captivity show through their posture the dejection of the misfortune that has befallen them, so too these, having become captives of the devil, since they are about to

Τοῦτο γάρ ἐστι πίστις τὸ τοῖς μὴ ὁρωμένοις ὡς ὁρωμένοις προσέχειν. «Ἔστι γάρ, φησί, πίστις ἐλπιζομένων ὑπόστασις πραγμάτων, ἔλεγχος οὐ βλεπομένων.» 2.10 Τί οὖν ἐστιν ὅ φημι καὶ πρὸς τί τοῦτό μοι εἴρηται μὴ τοῖς ὁρωμένοις προσέχειν ἀλλὰ πνευματικοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς κεκτῆσθαι; Ἵν' ὅταν ἴδῃς τῶν ὑδάτων τὴν κολυμβήθραν καὶ τὴν χεῖρα τοῦ ἱερέως ἐφαπτομένην σου τῆς κεφαλῆς, μήτε ἐκεῖνο ἁπλῶς ὕδωρ μόνον εἶναι νομίσῃς μήτε τὴν χεῖρα μόνην τοῦ ἀρχιερέως ἐπικεῖσθαί σου τῇ κεφαλῇ. Οὐδὲ γὰρ ἄνθρωπός ἐστιν ὁ ἐργαζόμενος τὰ τελούμενα ἀλλ' ἡ τοῦ Πνεύματος χάρις ἐστὶν ἡ καὶ τῶν ὑδάτων τὴν φύσιν ἁγιάζουσα καὶ μετὰ τῆς χειρὸς τοῦ ἱερέως ἐφαπτομένη σου τῆς κεφαλῆς. Οὐ καλῶς εἶπον ὅτι τῶν τῆς πίστεως ὀφθαλμῶν ἡμῖν χρεία πρὸς τὴν πίστιν τῶν μὴ ὁρωμένων ἵνα μηδὲν αἰσθητὸν ὑποπτεύωμεν; 2.11 Καὶ γὰρ τάφος ἐστὶ καὶ ἀνάστασις τὸ βάπτισμα· «Συνθάπτεται γὰρ ὁ παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ καὶ ἀνίσταται ὁ νέος ὁ ἀνακαινούμενος κατ' εἰκόνα τοῦ κτίσαντος.» Ἀποδυόμεθα καὶ ἐνδυόμεθα· ἀποδυόμεθα μὲν τὸ παλαιὸν ἱμάτιον τὸ ὑπὸ τοῦ πλήθους τῶν ἡμαρτημένων καταρρυπωθέν, ἐνδυόμεθα δὲ τὸ καινὸν καὶ πάσης κηλῖδος ἀπηλλαγμένον. Τί δὲ λέγω; Αὐτὸν τὸν Χριστὸν ἐνδυόμεθα· «Ὅσοι γάρ, φησίν, εἰς Χριστὸν ἐβαπτίσθητε, Χριστὸν ἐνεδύσασθε.» 2.12 Ἀλλ' ἐπειδὴ ἐπὶ θύραις λοιπόν ἐστιν ὁ καιρὸς καθ' ὃν μέλλετε τῶν τοσούτων ἀπολαύειν δωρεῶν, φέρε διδάξωμεν ὑμᾶς καὶ ἑκάστων τῶν γινομένων καθὼς οἷόν τε τὰς αἰτίας ἵνα εἰδέναι ἔχητε καὶ πλείονα τὴν πληροφορίαν δεξάμενοι οὕτως ἐντεῦθεν ἀναχωρήσητε. ∆εῖ τοίνυν ὑμᾶς εἰδέναι τίνος ἕνεκεν μετὰ τὴν διδασκαλίαν τὴν καθημερινὴν ἐπὶ τὰς τῶν ἐξορκιζόντων ὑμᾶς φωνὰς παραπέμπομεν. Οὐδὲ γὰρ ἁπλῶς οὐδὲ εἰκῇ τοῦτο γίνεται, ἀλλ' ἐπειδὴ μέλλετε ἔνοικον δέχεσθαι τὸν ἐπουράνιον βασιλέα διὰ τοῦτο μετὰ τὴν παρ' ἡμῶν νουθεσίαν παραλαμβάνοντες ὑμᾶς οἱ εἰς τοῦτο τεταγμένοι, καθάπερ οἰκίαν τινὰ εὐτρεπίζοντες τῷ μέλλοντι παραγίνεσθαι βασιλεῖ, οὕτως ἐκκαθαίρουσιν ὑμῶν τὴν διάνοιαν διὰ τῶν φοβερῶν ἐκείνων λόγων, φυγαδεύοντες πᾶσαν τοῦ πονηροῦ τὴν μηχανήν, καὶ ἀξίαν τῆς τοῦ βασιλέως παρουσίας κατασκευάζοντες. Οὐδὲ γὰρ οἷόν τε, κἂν ἄγριος ᾖ τις δαίμων κἂν ἀπηνής, μετὰ τὰς φωνὰς ἐκείνας τὰς φοβερὰς καὶ τὴν ἐπίκλησιν τοῦ κοινοῦ πάντων δεσπότου μὴ μετὰ πολλοῦ τοῦ τάχους αὐτῶν ἀποστῆναι. Μετὰ τούτου δὲ καὶ αὐτὸ τὸ γινόμενον πολλὴν εὐλάβειαν ἐντίθησι τῇ ψυχῇ καὶ εἰς πολλὴν αὐτὴν ἄγει κατάνυξιν. 2.13 Καὶ τὸ δὴ θαυμαστὸν καὶ παράδοξον ὅτι πᾶσα ἀνωμαλία καὶ ἀξιωμάτων διαφορὰ ἐνταῦθα ἐκποδὼν γίνεται· κἂν γὰρ ἐν ἀξιώματι κοσμικῷ τις τυγχάνῃ, κἂν ἐν τῇ τοῦ πλούτου περιφανείᾳ, κἂν ἐπ' εὐγενείᾳ μέγα φρονῇ καὶ ἐν τῇ δόξῃ τοῦ παρόντος βίου, ἕστηκε καὶ αὐτὸς ὁμοίως τῷ προσαίτῃ καὶ τῷ τὰ ῥάκια περιβεβλημένῳ, πολλάκις δὲ καὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἐκκεκομμένῳ καὶ τὸ σκέλος πεπηρωμένῳ, καὶ οὐ δυσχεραίνει τοῖς γινομένοις· οἶδε γὰρ ὅτι ἐν τοῖς πνευματικοῖς πάντα ταῦτα ἀπελήλαται καὶ ψυχῆς εὐγνωμοσύνη μόνον ζητεῖται. 2.14 Καὶ αἱ μὲν φωναὶ καὶ αἱ ἐπικλήσεις ἐκεῖναι φοβεραὶ καὶ θαυμασταὶ τοσοῦτον ἔχουσαι τὸ κέρδος· τὸ δὲ σχῆμα τῆς τῶν ποδῶν γυμνότητος καὶ τῆς τῶν χειρῶν ἐκτάσεως ἕτερόν τι ἡμῖν ἐνδείκνυται. Ὥσπερ οἱ τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν ταύτην τὴν σωματικὴν ὑπομένοντες καὶ διὰ τοῦ σχήματος τὴν κατήφειαν δεικνύουσι τῆς καταλαβούσης αὐτοὺς συμφορᾶς, οὕτω καὶ οὗτοι αἰχμάλωτοι γενόμενοι ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου, ἐπειδὴ μέλλουσιν
