Master; and through the fear of our own sins we will be able to quickly thrust 51.30 away the anger at the offenses of others; for if we must be mindful of sins, we must be mindful of our own alone; and if we remember our own, we will never take account of others'; just as, then, if we forget these, those will easily find a place in our thoughts. For if this man had remembered the ten thousand talents, he would not have been mindful of the one hundred denarii; but because he forgot those, for this reason he was choking his fellow servant over these, and wishing to demand a small amount, he neither obtained those, but also drew down the weight of the ten thousand talents onto his own head. For this reason I would say with confidence, that this is more grievous than every sin; or rather, not I, but Christ declared this through this parable. For if this were not more grievous than the ten thousand talents—I mean, of the unspeakable sins—he would not have recalled those also on account of this. So then, let us be zealous for nothing so much as to be pure from anger, and to reconcile those who are ill-disposed towards us, knowing that neither prayer, nor almsgiving, nor fasting, nor communion of the mysteries, nor anything else of this kind, if we bear a grudge, will be able to help us on that day; just as, then, if we overcome this sin, even if we have ten thousand offenses, we will be able to obtain some pardon. And the word is not mine, but His who is to judge us then, God’s. For just as he said here, that So also will my Father do, unless each of you forgive from your hearts; so also elsewhere he says: If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. So that, then, both here we may lead a meek and quiet life, and there we may obtain pardon and forgiveness, let us be zealous and make it our business to reconcile to ourselves as many enemies as we may have; for thus also we will reconcile our Master, even if we have sinned ten thousand times, and we will obtain the good things to come; of which may we all be deemed worthy, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
