to comprehend with the human mind; For His judgments are unsearchable, and His ways past finding out. But nevertheless, from the few things, having received clear and evident faith concerning the whole, let us give thanks to Him for all things that happen. For there is also another irrefutable argument for those who wish to philosophize concerning the providence of God. For we ask those who contradict, 'Is there a God?' and if they say that there is not, let us not even answer. For just as it is not worthwhile to answer madmen, so neither to those who say there is no God, For if a ship, having a few sailors and passengers, could not be saved for even one stade without the hand that steers it, much more would so great a world, having so many bodies within itself composed of different elements, not have lasted for so long a time, if some providence were not presiding over it, and holding together and sustaining this universe continually. But if, shamed by the common vote of all and by the experience of things 49.258, they confess that there is a God, let us say this to them, that if God exists, as indeed He does, it follows that He is also just; for if He is not just, neither is He God; but if He is just, He gives to each according to their worth. But we see that not all here receive according to their worth; therefore it is necessary to hope for some other reward laid up, so that when each has received according to his worth, the justice of God may be made manifest. For this argument introduces to us the philosophy not only concerning providence, but also concerning the resurrection. Knowing these things, therefore, let us both ourselves meditate on the things concerning providence and the resurrection, and teach others, and let us make every effort to silence those who rage against the Master, and let us ourselves glorify Him in all things. For thus we shall draw to ourselves His greater care, and we shall enjoy much assistance, and thus we shall be able to be delivered from true evil, and to attain the good things to come, by the grace and love for mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom to the Father be the glory, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen. To those who complain, for what reason the devil has not been removed from our midst; and that his wickedness does not harm us if we pay attention; and concerning
repentance.
Homily 2. 1. Isaac, once desiring to eat a meal from the hands of his son, sent his son out of the house to the hunt; but this Isaac, desiring to receive a meal from our hands, did not send us out of the house, but he himself ran to our table. What could be more affectionate than this? What more humble? He who deigned to show such fervent love, and endured to descend so low. For this very reason we too, though our voice was strained and our feet tired from the morning's discourse, upon seeing the fatherly face, immediately forgot our weakness, cast off our weariness, were uplifted by pleasure, saw the bright gray hair, and our soul was filled with light. For this reason also we set the table with eagerness, that having eaten he might bless us. Here there is no theft and deceit, as there was then; one was commanded to bring it in, but another brought it in; but I was both commanded to bring it in, and I have brought it in. Bless us then, O father, with a spiritual blessing, both that which we all pray to always receive, and that which is not for you alone,

Ὁ μὲν Ἰσαὰκ ἐπιθυμήσας ποτὲ ἄριστον ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν τοῦ παιδὸς φαγεῖν, τὸν παῖδα εἰς τὴν θήραν ἐξέπεμψεν ἐκ τῆς οἰκίας· οὗτος δὲ ὁ Ἰσαὰκ ἐπιθυμήσας ἄριστον ἐκ τῶν ἡμετέρων χειρῶν λαβεῖν, οὐχ ἡμᾶς ἐξέπεμψεν ἐκ τῆς οἰκίας, ἀλλ' αὐτὸς πρὸς τὴν ἡμετέραν ἔδραμε τράπεζαν. Τί τούτου φιλοστοργότερον γένοιτ' ἄν; τί δὲ ταπεινότερον; ὃς οὕτω θερμὴν ἐπιδείξασθαι τὴν ἀγάπην κατηξίωσε, καὶ τοσοῦτον καταβῆναι ἠνέσχετο. ∆ιά τοι τοῦτο καὶ ἡμεῖς καὶ τὸν τόνον τῆς φωνῆς καὶ τὴν δύναμιν τῶν ποδῶν καταβαλόντες ἀπὸ τῆς ἑωθινῆς διαλέξεως, ἰδόντες τὴν πατρικὴν ὄψιν, εὐθέως ἐπελαθόμεθα τῆς ἀσθενείας, ἀπεθέμεθα τὸν ὄκνον, ἀνεπτερώθημεν ὑπὸ τῆς ἡδονῆς, εἴδομεν τὴν λαμπρὰν πολιὰν, καὶ φωτὸς ἐνεπλήσθη ἡμῶν ἡ ψυχή. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο καὶ μετὰ προθυμίας τὴν τράπεζαν παρατιθέμεθα, ἵνα φαγὼν εὐλογήσῃ ἡμᾶς.
