he confused all things, and shook the Church, he was called Saul, for this very reason of shaking the Church, having taken his name from the deed; but when he departed from that madness and put aside the disturbance, and ended the war, and ceased from persecuting, again he was renamed Paul from ceasing 51.127; But this account is stale and not true, and for this reason I have set it forth, so that you may not be deceived by mere etymologies. For in the first place, his parents gave him this name, not being prophets of any kind, and foreseeing the future. Then, if he was called Saul for this reason, because he was shaking and troubling the Church, he should have, upon ceasing to shake the Church, immediately put aside the name as well; but now we see that he has desisted from the shaking of the Church, but has not put aside the name, but is still called Saul. And so that you may not think that I say these things to deceive you, I will enumerate this for you from the beginning. They cast out Stephen, it says, and stoned him, and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man called Saul; and again, And Saul was consenting to his death; and elsewhere, But Saul was ravaging the Church, entering house after house, and dragging off men and women; and again, But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord; and again, He heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? Therefore, from this point he should have put aside the name, for he had ceased from persecuting. What then? Did he put it aside immediately? By no means, and this is clear from what follows; but consider: Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened, he saw no one; and again; And the Lord said to Ananias: Go into the street called Straight, you will find in the house of Judas a man named Saul; and again, Ananias entered and said, Brother Saul, the Lord has sent me, he who appeared to you on the road, so that you might regain your sight. Then he began to preach and confounded the Jews, and not even so did he put aside the name, but was still called Saul. For their plot, it says, became known to Saul. Therefore only here? By no means, but, There was a famine, it says, and the disciples determined to send relief to the saints in Jerusalem. And they sent it by the hand of Barnabas and Saul. Behold, he is ministering to the saints, and is still called Saul. And after these things Barnabas went to Antioch, and seeing the grace of God, and that there was a great multitude there, he went out to Tarsus to look for Saul. Behold, he is also converting many, and is called Saul; and again; Now there were, it says, in Antioch in the church that was there, prophets and teachers, Symeon who was called Niger, and Lucius the Cyrenian, and Manaen a member of the court of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. Behold, he became both a teacher and a prophet, and was still called Saul. And again, While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said: Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul. 3. Behold, he is also set apart by the Spirit, and not yet does he put aside the name, but when he came to Salamis, when he found the magician, then Luke says concerning him: But Saul, who is also Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, said. From this point the beginning of the re- 51.128 naming took place. Let us not therefore grow weary in seeking this account concerning names. For the discovery of names has great power even in the affairs of life. For it has often brought about recognition after a long time, and the discovery of names has revealed a hidden relationship, and it has resolved disputes in court, and has put down battles, and the discovery of names has extinguished war, and has often been the basis of peace. And if in the affairs of life the power of the discovery of names is so great, much more so in spiritual matters. But before
