and fulfill every good pleasure of goodness, and the work of faith with power. That He may count you worthy, he says, of the calling, showing that many were also cast out. For this reason he added, And fulfill every good pleasure of goodness. Since he also who was clothed in filthy garments was called, but he did not remain in the calling; for this reason he became even more an outcast from the calling into the bride-chamber. Since also the 62.481 five virgins were called; "Arise," it says, "the bridegroom comes"; and they prepared themselves, but they did not enter. Therefore showing what kind of calling, he added; And fulfill every good pleasure of goodness, and the work of faith with power. This is the calling we seek, he says. See how gently he restrains them. For lest they should be puffed up by the excess of praises, as having accomplished great things, and become indolent, he shows that something is still lacking for them, as long as they are in this life; which also writing to the Hebrews he said; "You have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin." Unto all, he says, good pleasure; that is, pleasing, persuasion, full assurance; as if he said, that the persuasion of God may be, that you may lack nothing, that you may be as He wills. And the work, he says, of faith with power. What is this? The endurance of persecutions, that we may not faint, he says. That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2. See; he spoke of glory there, he spoke of it here also; he said that they are glorified, so as even to boast; he said what was much more, that they also glorify God; he said that they will receive that glory; but here also he says; for when the master is glorified, the servants also are glorified. For those who glorify the master, are themselves much more glorified, both by this very thing, and apart from this. For glory is the affliction for Christ's sake, and everywhere he calls the matter glory; and by however much dishonor we suffer, so much the more do we become glorious. Then again showing that this very thing also is of God, he says, According to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ; that is, this grace God Himself gave to us, that He might be glorified in us, and might glorify us in Himself. How is He glorified in us? Because we prefer nothing to Him. How are we glorified in Him? Because we have received power from Him so as not to give in to the terrible things brought upon us. For when a trial occurs, at the same time both God is glorified, and we are; for they glorify Him, because He has so strengthened us; and they admire us, because we have prepared ourselves to be worthy. But all these things come from the grace of God. Now we ask you, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, that you not be quickly shaken from your mind. When the resurrection will be, he has not said; but that it will not be now, he has said. And our, he says, gathering together to Him. This too is no small thing. Do you see how the exhortation also is again with praise and encouragement, in that the Lord and all the saints will surely appear together with us? Concerning the coming of Christ he here discourses, and concerning our gathering together; for these things will be together. He lifts up their mind; that you be not, he says, quickly shaken. neither be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter, as if from us, as that the day of the Lord is at hand. Here he seems to me to hint that some were going about having forged a letter supposedly from Paul, and displaying it, to say that the day of the Lord was indeed at hand, so that from this they might deceive many. Therefore, that they might not be deceived, Paul makes them secure, 62.482 through what he writes and says; "Be not troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word." And what he says is this; even if someone having a spirit of prophecy should say this, do not believe. For when I was with you, I told you these things; so that not

Πότε μὲν ἔσται ἀνάστασις, οὐκ εἴρηκεν· ὅτι δὲ νῦν οὐκ ἔσται, εἴρηκε. Καὶ ἡμῶν, φησὶν, ἐπισυναγωγῆς ἐπ' αὐτόν. Οὐ μικρὸν καὶ τοῦτο. Ὁρᾷς πῶς καὶ ἡ παραίνεσις πάλιν μετ' ἐγκωμίου καὶ προτροπῆς, τῷ πάντως μεθ' ἡμῶν αὐτῶν φαίνεσθαι τὸν Κύριον καὶ τοὺς ἁγίους πάντας; Περὶ τῆς παρουσίας τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐνταῦθα διαλέγεται, καὶ περὶ τῆς ἐπισυναγωγῆς τῆς ἡμῶν· ὁμοῦ γὰρ ταῦτα ἔσται.
