And whereas you saw the feet and the toes, part of potter's clay and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; and there shall be in it of the iron root, in the way that you saw the iron mixed with the miry clay. And the toes of the feet part of iron, and part of clay, part of the kingdom shall be strong, and from it shall be broken. And whereas you saw the iron mixed with the miry clay, they shall be mingled with the seed of men, and they shall not cleave to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. When has this happened under the Romans? Do you see that kingdoms have become such? Not all from a royal family, but otherwise many also being unbelievingly (l. ἀπίστως) disposed. And in the days of those kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall not be destroyed for ever: and his kingdom shall not be left to another people; it will make fine and winnow all the kingdoms; and it itself shall rise up 56.209 for ever. Bring me the Jews here. What would they say about this prophecy? For it is not lawful to say these things about a human kingdom, that the kingdom will be endless, but it is likely that there is someone about whom these things have been said. But if you should say it was spoken about the Father, then hear what it says: In the days of those kings, that is, of the Romans. But otherwise if they should say, And how did he crush the gold, the kingdom of the Babylonians which was established long ago? and how the silver, that of the Persians? and how the bronze, that of the Macedonians? for these things happened long ago, and came to an end. But do not be amazed, beloved. For if Paul did not dare to speak openly, but, 'Until he who restrains,' he says, 'is taken out of the way'; much more so the prophet. For what benefit, tell me, came from speaking openly? But if they should say, How did he crush the bronze, the iron? will this be a common question? for even concerning themselves it will likewise be questioned, how does he overthrow kingdoms that have already been extinguished? But the overthrowing of other kingdoms, in which such things are present, he reasonably brings about. But otherwise he was working this secretly, being God even before this, and not appearing then, so that you might reasonably doubt. But if anyone should wish to take the prophecy in the present time also, he would not be wrong. For even now he has crushed the kingdoms, the pride of the Macedonians, their authority. For when you see martyrs, doing this in order that his command might be fulfilled, and much more enduring death, you will see his kingdom, and how he has filled the earth. You have seen prophecies. If the things concerning them did not come to pass, then do not believe in the consummation either. Then he adds: Forasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the clay, the iron, the bronze, the silver, and the gold, God has made known to the king what must come to pass hereafter. And the dream is true, and its interpretation sure. See how what was said is confirmed, from the manifest things the unmanifest, practically saying, since I have told the dream, believe (l. πίστευε) the interpretation. What then of the king? Then, it says, King Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his (l. αὐτοῦ) face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odors to him. Immediately he was thus believed. And he rightly said to offer an oblation and sweet odors to him. You have seen a very great wonder. You have seen how it is a custom for the Greeks to make gods out of men. So that when they say, Whence is idolatry? learn its origin. Thus also they made the apostles gods out of men. Thus also the devil was eager from the beginning to introduce impiety, saying: You shall be as gods. And since he did not prevail then, he tries later, striving everywhere to introduce polytheism. And the 56.210 king answered and said to Daniel: Of a truth I know that your God, he is the living God, and the Lord of kings. From this alone he believed so immediately, but the Jews, hearing countless such things, did not pay attention. Do you see how he shows you the good sense of the Gentiles? For since the time had finally come, in which it was necessary for the preaching to [go] to them
