his astrologers foretold. Therefore, he said, so that you, having heard their teaching, might not prefer it to our religion, the king contrived that not many, but a few, should associate with you, having given us commands to make known to you none of the sorrows of life. When the young man heard these things, he did not add anything else to say; but a word of salvation touched his heart, and the grace of the Paraclete undertook to open his spiritual eyes, leading him by the hand to the true God, as the story will show as it proceeds. And as his father and king came frequently to see the boy (for he loved him with an exceeding love), on one occasion the son says to him: I have desired to learn something from you, O master and king, on account of which continual grief and unceasing care consumes my soul. But the father, feeling pain in his heart from these very words, said: Tell me, most beloved child, what is the grief that possesses you, and I will hasten to change it quickly into joy. And the boy says: What is the reason for my confinement here, that you have shut me up within walls and gates, having made me unable to go out at all and unseen by all 54? And the father said: I do not wish, O child, for you to see anything of the things that displease your heart and hinder your joy. For I intend for you to live your whole life in continual luxury and all joy and delight. But know well, O master, says the son to the father, that in this way I do not live in joy and delight, but rather in affliction and great distress, so that even food and drink itself seem to me unpleasant and bitter. For I long to see everything outside of these gates. If, therefore, you wish me not to live in pain, command me to go forth as I wish, and for my soul to be delighted by the sight of the things hitherto unseen by me. The king was grieved when he heard these things, and he considered that if he should refuse the request, he would be the cause of greater sorrow and care to him. and having said, "I will do your heart's desire, child." Having ordered choice horses and a bodyguard befitting a king to be prepared immediately, he appointed for him to go forth whenever he wished, having instructed those with him to bring nothing unpleasant to meet him, but to show the boy everything beautiful and causing delight, and to assemble choruses in the streets sounding forth all-harmonious songs and putting on various spectacles, so that by these his mind might be occupied and be delighted. To be sure, thus frequently going on processions, the king's son saw on one of the days, through the forgetfulness of the attendants, two men, of whom the one was maimed, and the other was blind; whom having seen, and being displeased in his soul, he says to those with him: 56 Who are these, and what sort is their wretched appearance? But they, not being able to hide what had come into his sight, said: These are human sufferings, which are accustomed to happen to mortals from corrupt matter and an ill-humored body. And the boy says: Is it accustomed for these things to happen to all men? They say: Not to all, but to those in whom health may be diverted by the badness of the humors. Therefore the boy asked again: If, he says, this is not accustomed to happen to all men, but to some, are they known, whom these terrible things are about to overtake? or does it occur indefinitely and unexpectedly? They say: And who of men is able to foresee the future and to know it precisely? for this is beyond human nature, and allotted only to the immortal gods. And indeed the king's son ceased asking questions, but he was pained in his heart at what was seen, and the form of his face was changed by the unfamiliarity of the matter. And after not many days, passing by again he meets an old man, aged in days

Ἵν' οὖν, φησί, μή, ἀκούσας τῆς ἐκείνων διδαχῆς, ταύτην προκρίνῃς τῆς ἡμετέρας θρησκείας, μὴ προσομιλεῖν σοι πολλούς, ἀλλ' εὐαριθμήτους, ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπετηδεύσατο, ἐντολὰς ἡμῖν δοὺς μηδέν σοι τῶν τοῦ βίου ἀνιαρῶν γνωρίσαι. Ταῦτα ὡς ἤκουσεν ὁ νεανίας οὐδὲν ἕτερον προσέθετο λαλῆσαι· ἥψατο δὲ τῆς καρδίας αὐτοῦ λόγος σωτήριος, καὶ ἡ τοῦ Παρακλήτου χάρις τοὺς νοητοὺς αὐτοῦ ὀφθαλμοὺς διανοίγειν ἐπεχείρησε, πρὸς τὸν ἀψευδῆ χειραγωγοῦσα Θεόν, ὡς προϊὼν ὁ λόγος δηλώσειε. Συχνῶς δὲ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ βασιλέως κατὰ θέαν τοῦ παιδὸς ἐρχομένου (ἀγάπῃ γὰρ ὑπερβαλλούσῃ ἐφίλει αὐτόν), ἐν μιᾷ λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ υἱός· Μαθεῖν τι ἐπεθύμησα παρὰ σοῦ, ὦ δέσποτα καὶ βασιλεῦ, ἐφ' ᾧ λύπη διηνεκὴς καὶ μέριμνα ἀδιάπαυστος κατεσθίει μου τὴν ψυχήν. ὁ δὲ πατήρ, ἐξ αὐτῶν τῶν ῥημάτων ἀλγήσας τὰ σπλάγχνα, ἔφη· Λέγε μοι, τέκνον ποθεινότατον, τίς ἡ συνέχουσά σε λύπη, καὶ θᾶττον αὐτὴν εἰς χαρὰν μεταμεῖψαι σπουδάσω. καὶ φησὶν ὁ παῖς· Τίς ὁ τρόπος τῆς ἐμῆς ἐνθάδε καθείρξεως, ὅτι ἐντὸς τειχέων καὶ πυλῶν συνέκλεισάς με, ἀπρόϊτον πάντη καὶ ἀθέατον πᾶσί 54 με καταστήσας; καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἔφη· Οὐ βούλομαι, ὦ τέκνον, ἰδεῖν σέ τι τῶν ἀηδιζόντων τὴν καρδίαν σου καὶ ἐγκοπτόντων σοι τὴν εὐφροσύνην. ἐν τρυφῇ γὰρ διηνεκεῖ καὶ χαρᾷ πάσῃ καὶ θυμηδίᾳ ζῆσαί σε τὸν ἅπαντα διανοοῦμαι αἰῶνα. Ἀλλ' εὖ ἴσθι, ὦ δέσποτα, φησὶν ὁ υἱὸς τῷ πατρί, τῷ τρόπῳ τούτῳ οὐκ ἐν χαρᾷ καὶ θυμηδίᾳ ζῶ, ἐν θλίψει δὲ μᾶλλον καὶ στενοχωρίᾳ πολλῇ, ὡς καὶ αὐτὴν τὴν βρῶσίν τε καὶ πόσιν ἀηδῆ μοι καταφαίνεσθαι καὶ πικράν. ποθῶ γὰρ ὁρᾶν πάντα τὰ ἔξω τῶν πυλῶν τούτων. εἰ οὖν βούλει ἐν ὀδύνῃ μὴ ζῆν με, κέλευσον προέρχεσθαι καθὼς βούλομαι, καὶ τέρπεσθαι τὴν ψυχὴν τῇ θέᾳ τῶν γενομένων τέως ἀθεάτων μοι. Ἐλυπήθη ὁ βασιλεὺς ὡς ἤκουσε ταῦτα, καὶ διεσκόπει ὡς, εἰ κωλύσει τῆς αἰτήσεως, πλείονος αὐτῷ ἀνίας καὶ μερίμνης πρόξενος ἔσται. καὶ Ἐγώ σου, τέκνον, εἰπών, τὰ καταθύμια ποιήσω. ἵππους αὐτίκα ἐκλεκτοὺς καὶ δορυφορίαν τὴν βασιλεῖ πρέπουσαν εὐτρεπισθῆναι κελεύσας, προέρχεσθαι αὐτὸν ὅτε βούλοιτο διωρίσατο, ἐπισκήψας τοῖς συνοῦσιν αὐτῷ μηδὲν ἀηδὲς εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῷ ἄγειν, ἀλλὰ πᾶν ὅ τι καλὸν καὶ τέρψιν ἐμποιοῦν, τοῦτο ὑποδεικνύειν τῷ παιδί, χορούς τε συγκροτεῖν ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς παναρμονίους κροτούντων ᾠδὰς καὶ ποικίλα θέατρα συνιστώντων, ὥστε τούτοις τὸν νοῦν αὐτοῦ ἀπασχολεῖσθαι καὶ ἐνηδύνεσθαι. Ἀμέλει οὑτωσὶ συχνάζων ἐν ταῖς προόδοις ὁ τοῦ βασιλέως υἱὸς εἶδεν ἐν μιᾷ τῶν ἡμερῶν, κατὰ λήθην τῶν ὑπηρετῶν, ἄνδρας δύο, ὧν ὁ μὲν λελωβημένος, τυφλὸς δὲ ὁ ἕτερος ἦν· οὓς ἰδών, καὶ ἀηδισθεὶς τὴν ψυχήν, λέγει τοῖς μετ' αὐτοῦ· 56 Τίνες οὗτοι, καὶ ποταπὴ ἡ δυσχερὴς αὐτῶν θέα; οἱ δέ, μὴ δυνάμενοι τὸ εἰς ὅρασιν αὐτοῦ ἐλθὸν ἀποκρύψαι, ἔφησαν· Πάθη ταῦτά εἰσιν ἀνθρώπινα, ἅτινα ἐξ ὕλης διεφθαρμένης καὶ σώματος κακοχύμου τοῖς βροτοῖς συμβαίνειν εἴωθε. καί φησιν ὁ παῖς· Πᾶσι τοῖς ἀνθρώποις ταῦτα εἴθισται συμβαίνειν; λέγουσιν ἐκεῖνοι· Οὐ πᾶσιν, ἀλλ' οἷς ἂν ἐκτραπείη τὸ ὑγιεινὸν ἐκ τῆς τῶν χυμῶν μοχθηρίας. αὖθις οὖν ἐπυνθάνετο ὁ παῖς Εἰ οὐ πᾶσι, φησί, τοῦτο τοῖς ἀνθρώποις συμβαίνειν εἴωθεν, ἀλλά τισιν, ἆρα γνωστοὶ καθεστήκασιν, οὓς μέλλει ταῦτα καταλήψεσθαι τὰ δεινά; ἢ ἀδιορίστως καὶ ἀπροόπτως ὑφίσταται; λέγουσιν ἐκεῖνοι· Καὶ τίς τῶν ἀνθρώπων τὰ μέλλοντα συνιδεῖν δύναται καὶ ἀκριβῶς ἐπιγνῶναι; κρεῖττον γὰρ ἀνθρωπίνης φύσεως τοῦτο, καὶ μόνοις ἀποκληρωθὲν τοῖς ἀθανάτοις θεοῖς. καὶ ἐπαύσατο μὲν ὁ τοῦ βασιλέως υἱὸς ἐπερωτῶν, ὠδυνήθη δὲ τὴν καρδίαν ἐπὶ τῷ ὁραθέντι, καὶ ἠλλοιώθη ἡ μορφὴ τοῦ προσώπου αὐτοῦ τῷ ἀσυνήθει τοῦ πράγματος. Μετ' οὐ πολλὰς δὲ ἡμέρας αὖθις διερχόμενος ἐντυγχάνει γέροντι πεπαλαιωμένῳ ἐν ἡμέραις
