Fall in love with this divine and prudent one, modestly attired, with a reverent and steady gaze. 3.1.5 For thus Solomon says in the book of Proverbs: Do not forsake her, and she will hold you fast. Love her, and she will guard you. Do not pass by with contempt, nor consider worthless the things set before us on this table for this reason, that you can acquire the possession for free; but rather desire it all the more, because we do not sit as retailers shifting a yoke or a scale; but we seek one profit, the salvation of the disciple. 3.2.1 A discourse from the Acts of Paul was read to us, to Festus and Agrippa, of Paul the faithful apostle and wise orator. You saw, of course, listener, if you paid attention, how he does not betray the truth out of cowardice, and how, mixing his deference to Agrippa with boldness, he softens the harsh tribunal towards goodness, as if charming certain wild beasts with the manipulations of his speech. 3.2.2 Zechariah also prophesied today, opening for us the door of the great mysteries of the Only-Begotten, through the stone that has the seven rays of the eyes, through the golden lampstand on which are the seven lamps and the two olive branches. Many are the subsequent Scriptures that hold a rich treasure of benefit, all of which I would have wished to go through and show you the abundance of the spiritual festival. 3.2.3 But the promise of the previous day urges me to the payment of the debt. For having begun to attack greed with many accusations, since we did not have time to lay bare its vanity, we postponed the refutation of the accusation to the present day. Hear, therefore, and become just judges of the truth, since you are judging not for any others, but for your own salvation, and cast all the condemning votes against the guilty one, each of you having driven it out from your own soul as from a house or a city. 3.3.1 Greed, then, is not only to be mad for silver along with other possessions and to wish to join what one does not have to what one does have, but, to speak more generally, it is to wish to have more of everything than is due and fitting. 3.3.2 And indeed, the first to suffer this transgression was the devil, being an archangel and appointed to the most beautiful life and order, but conceiving, the empty-minded one, tyranny and rebellion against the Godhead; then being cast down and falling into this terrestrial air, a bad neighbor to our life. 3.3.3 So he neither attained what he pursued, the Godhead; and he lost what he possessed, the state of an archangel; an unfaithful slave who by small audacities became a robber; the dog of the Greek myth, deprived of the meat and not grasping the shadow—for how could he? of an unattainable thing. 3.3.4 After him the first man, enticed into sensual pleasure, lost immortality by a forbidden food, as Esau later did his birthright for a lentil. And the love of having more introduced these dialects and the many tongues of men into life. For those who, puffed up by human prosperity, expected heaven to be accessible to them and built a ridiculous tower for a futile ascent to it, these made people of one language to have different tongues; and seeking more than they had, they were both confounded and left for the race of men the toil of hearing meaningless sounds and seeking interpretations. 3.3.5 And what of Pharaoh? From where did he fall into various and diverse plagues? Was it not through greed and the desire to be master of a foreign people, belonging in no way to his kingdom? And for this reason, by not releasing the foreigners, he lost his own; some in the plague of the firstborn, others in the pursuit through the sea. For I pass over rivers turned to blood and the immense generation of frogs and the plague of locusts and the outbreak of boils and the death of the cattle and all the affliction,

Μὴ παρέλθῃς καταφρονήσας μηδὲ τὰ παρ' ἡμῖν ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης ταύτης προκείμενα διὰ τοῦτο αὐτὰ νομίσῃς ἄτιμα, ἐπειδὴ προῖκά σε ἔξεστιν τὴν κτῆσιν περιποιήσασθαι· ἀλλὰ καὶ μᾶλλον ἐπιθύμησον, ὅτι οὐ καθήμεθα κάπηλοι ζυγὸν ἢ τρυτάνην μεταφέροντες· ἓν δὲ κέρδος ζητοῦμεν, τὴν τοῦ μαθητοῦ σωτηρίαν. 3.2.1 Ἀνεγνώσθη ἡμῖν ἐκ τῶν Πράξεων Παύλου λόγος πρὸς Φῆστον καὶ Ἀγρίππαν, Παύλου τοῦ πιστοῦ ἀποστόλου καὶ σοφοῦ δημηγόρου. Εἶδες πάντως, ὁ ἀκροατής, εἰ τὸν νοῦν ἐπέστησας, ὅπως καὶ τὴν ἀλή θειαν οὐ προδίδωσιν ἐκ δειλίας καὶ τὴν πρὸς τὸν Ἀγρίππαν θεραπείαν τῇ παρρησίᾳ κεράσας τὸ τραχὺ κριτήριον ἐκμαλάσσει πρὸς ἀγαθότητα, ὥσπερ θηρία τινὰ κατεπᾴδων ταῖς τοῦ λόγου μεταχειρήσεσιν. 3.2.2 Προε φήτευσεν καὶ σήμερον Ζαχαρίας τῶν μεγάλων ἡμῖν μυστηρίων τοῦ Μονογενοῦς ὑπανοίγων τὴν θύραν διὰ τοῦ λίθου τὰς ἑπτὰ βολὰς τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν κεκτημένου, διὰ τῆς χρυσῆς λυχνίας, ἐφ' ἧς οἱ ἑπτὰ λύχνοι καὶ τὰ δύο στελέχη τῶν ἐλαιῶν. Πολλαὶ αἱ ἑξῆς Γραφαὶ πλούσιον τὸν θησαυρὸν τῆς ὠφελείας ἔχουσαι, αἷς ἐβουλόμην πάσαις ἐπελθεῖν καὶ δεῖξαι ὑμῖν τὴν τῆς πνευματικῆς πανηγύρεως εὐθηνίαν. 3.2.3 Ἐπείγει δέ με πρὸς τὴν ἔκτισιν τοῦ χρέους ἡ τῆς προτεραίας ὑπόσχεσις. Ἀρξάμενοι γὰρ πολλαῖς κατηγορίαις τῆς πλεονεξίας καθάπτεσθαι, ἐπειδὴ μὴ ἔφθημεν αὐτῆς γυμνῶσαι τὴν ματαιότητα, εἰς τὴν παροῦσαν ἡμέραν τὸν ἔλεγχον τῆς κατηγορίας ὑπερεθέμεθα. Ἀκούσατε οὖν καὶ γένεσθε εὐγνώμονες τῆς ἀληθείας κριταί ἐπειδὴ μήτε ἄλλοις τισίν, ἀλλὰ τῇ ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίᾳ δικάζετε, καὶ πάσας τὰς κατακρινούσας ψήφους ἐπὶ τὴν ὑπεύθυνον φέρετε, ἕκαστος τῆς ἰδίας ψυχῆς ὥσπερ οἰκίας ἢ πόλεως αὐτὴν ἀπελάσαντες. 3.3.1 Πλεονεξία τοίνυν ἐστὶν οὐ μόνον τῷ ἀργυρίῳ σὺν τοῖς ἄλλοις κτήμασιν ἐπιμαίνεσθαι καὶ βούλεσθαι τοῖς παροῦσι τὰ μὴ προσόντα συνάπτειν, ἀλλά, γενικώτερον εἰπεῖν, τὸ ἐπὶ παντὸς πράγματος πλέον ἔχειν βούλεσθαι τοῦ ὀφειλομένου καὶ ἐπιβάλλοντος. 3.3.2 Καὶ δὴ τοῦτο τὸ πλημμέλημα πρῶτος ἔπαθεν ὁ διάβολος, ἀρχάγγελος μὲν ὢν καὶ ἐπὶ τῆς καλλίστης ζωῆς καὶ τάξεως τεταγμένος, τυραννίδα δὲ καὶ ἐπανάστασιν κατὰ τῆς θεότητος ἐννοήσας, ὁ ματαιόφρων· εἶτα καταβλη θεὶς καὶ εἰς τὸν περίγειον τοῦτον ἀέρα καταπεσὼν κακὸς γείτων τῆς ἡμετέρας ζωῆς. 3.3.3 Οὔτε γοῦν κατέλαβεν ὃ ἐδίωκεν, τὴν θεότητα· καὶ ἀπώλεσεν ὃ ἐκέκτητο, τὸ ἀρχάγγελον· δοῦλος ἄπιστος ταῖς κατὰ μικρὸν τόλμαις εἰς λῃστὴν ἐξελθών· κύων τοῦ παρ' Ἕλλησιν μύθου καὶ τοῦ κρέως στερηθεὶς καὶ τῆς σκιᾶς οὐ δραξάμενος πῶς γάρ; ἀκαταλήπτου πράγματος. 3.3.4 Μετὰ τοῦτον ὁ πρῶτος ἄνθρωπος εἰς ἡδυπάθειαν δελεασθεὶς ἀπηγορευμένῃ βρώσει τὴν ἀθανασίαν ἀπώλεσεν, ὡς Ἡσαῦ ὕστερον διὰ φακὸν τὰ πρωτοτόκια. Καὶ τὰς διαλέκτους δὲ ταύτας καὶ τὰς πολλὰς τῶν ἀνθρώπων φωνὰς ἔρως τοῦ πλείονος εἰς τὸν βίον εἰσήγαγεν. Οἱ γὰρ τῇ ἀνθρωπικῇ εὐθηνίᾳ ὑπερμαζήσαντες, βατὸν δὲ ἑαυτοῖς ἔσεσθαι τὸν οὐρανὸν προσδοκήσαντες καὶ πύργον γελοῖον ἐπὶ τὴν ἐκείνου ματαιοποιοῦντες ἀνάβασιν, οὗτοι τοὺς ὁμοφώνους ἀνθρώπους ἑτερογλώσσους ἐποίησαν· καὶ τὸ πλέον οὗ εἶχον ζητοῦντες αὐτοί τε συνεχέθησαν καὶ τῷ γένει τῶν ἀνθρώπων κατέλιπον κάμνειν ἐν ἀκοαῖς ἀσήμων φωνῶν καὶ ἑρμηνειῶν ζητήσει. 3.3.5 Τί δὲ ὁ Φαραώ; Πόθεν ταῖς διαφοραῖς καὶ ποικίλαις περιέπεσε μάστιξιν; οὐ διὰ πλεονεξίαν καὶ τὸ βούλεσθαι κύριος εἶναι ξένου λαοῦ καὶ μηδαμόθεν τῇ ἐκείνου βασιλείᾳ προσήκοντος; Καὶ διὰ τοῦτο τοὺς ἀλλοτρίους οὐκ ἀφιεὶς τοὺς ἰδίους ἀπώλεσεν· τοὺς μὲν ἐν πληγῇ τῶν πρωτοτόκων, τοὺς δὲ ἐν τῇ διώξει τῇ κατὰ θάλασσαν. Ἀφίημι γὰρ ποταμοὺς εἰς αἷμα ῥυέντας καὶ βατράχων ἄπλετον γένεσιν καὶ βρούχου λύμην καὶ φλυκταινῶν ἐξάνθησιν καὶ τῶν τετραπόδων τὸν θάνατον καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν κάκωσιν,
