to have heard; then to return with the many women and to report to the eleven. The account may be otherwise, assigning the first events to the women from Galilee, I mean the arrival at the tomb, the bringing of the spices, the appearance of the two men to them, and their words to them; so that the report to the eleven was no longer made by them alone, but by all together, each one relating what she had seen; among whom was Mary Magdalene again with the rest, herself also reporting to the disciples the things seen specifically by her alone.
8. But I also inquire into this, how in Mark it is said that after the Sabbath had passed they prepared spices, while in Luke they did this before the Sabbath on the day of Preparation itself. And this, being entwined with the former questions, would find a similar interpretation to them; we demonstrating that they were not the same women, but rather some were busy with the burial rites before the Sabbath on the day of Preparation itself, on which the Savior suffered, and others after the Sabbath; for Luke clearly testifies that they did these things on the very day of the passion, mentioning no names of women, but simply saying the women who had come with him from Galilee; but Mark records by name only three, who by themselves had made provision for the spices, not on the day of Preparation, but after the Sabbath had passed; and what follows shows that these were different women from those in Luke. These women in Mark see the young man sitting on the right, who also says to them: "Do not be afraid; you seek Jesus of Nazareth; he has risen, he is not here." But to the women in Luke two men appeared in shining apparel, and utter other words, saying: "Why do you seek the living among the dead?" and so forth; and those in Mark, having heard what was commanded, to tell the disciples; they said nothing to anyone; but those in Luke went and reported to the eleven; so that from all these things it is concluded that they were not the same women; therefore they did not do the recorded things at one and the same time.
9. "And as they were speaking these things, Jesus himself stood in their midst, and says to them, Peace be with you." Here someone might be perplexed how the Lord, appearing to the eleven disciples gathered together after the resurrection, according to Luke and John who both record these things in agreement, is no longer recorded as doing or saying the same things in both. That the two evangelists recorded the same vision, occurring at one and the same hour and day, must first be established; and this would become clear to you upon careful observation of the Scripture. For John, having said before, "But on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene comes, announcing to the disciples that she has seen the Lord and that he had said these things to her," immediately adds, saying: "When it was evening on that day, when the disciples were gathered, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said, Peace be with you." So it is clear from these things that what is in John was done in the evening on the very Lord's day of the resurrection; and according to Luke the same day and hour will be found; for he also says: "But on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women came to the tomb." Then, what follows, that having seen angels, they returned and reported to the disciples what they had seen. But Peter, hastening, goes to the tomb, and sees the linen cloths; and these things happened very early in the morning, on the day of the resurrection. And the Scripture immediately adds, saying: "And behold, two of them on that same day were going to a village." These were the ones with Cleopas; with whom he entered into Emmaus, took bread and blessed it, and as he gave it to them, he became invisible. Then it adds: "And rising up, they returned that very hour to Jerusalem, and found gathered the
