Would you not have done everything to obtain this promise? Open, therefore, even now the heavens with your mind and look upon that theater, composed not of such men, but of those who are more precious than gold and precious stones and the rays of the sun and all visible brightness, and not only of men but also of those much more precious than these: angels, archangels, thrones, dominions, principalities, powers. For concerning the King, it is not possible for anyone even to say what he is like; so does that beauty, that fairness, that power, that glory, that majesty, that magnificence escape all reason and understanding. Shall we then deprive ourselves of so many and so great goods, tell me, so that we might not labor for a short time? For if it were necessary to endure ten thousand deaths each day, if even Gehenna itself, for the sake of seeing Christ coming in His glory and being numbered in the choir of the saints, ought not all those things to be endured? Hear what the blessed Peter says: "It is good for us to be here." And if he, having seen a certain faint image of the things to come, suddenly cast everything from his soul because of the pleasure instilled in his soul from that sight, what could one say, when the very truth of things shall arrive, when, the palaces having been opened, it will be possible to behold the King himself, no longer in a riddle nor through a mirror, but face to face, no longer through faith but through sight?

12 The many, therefore, of those who are more irrationally disposed, consider it desirable only to be delivered from Gehenna; but I say that it is a punishment much more grievous than Gehenna not to be in that glory, and I think that the one who has fallen from there ought not to mourn the evils in Gehenna so much as the fall from the heavens; for this alone is the most grievous of all things by way of punishment. Now, often seeing a king riding into the royal palace with many bodyguards, we count blessed those who are near him and who share in his counsel and judgment and partake of the rest of his glory; and even if we have ten thousand good things, we consider ourselves wretched and take no notice of any of them, looking to the glory of those around him, although we know that such splendor is precarious and uncertain, both because of wars and because of plots and because of envy, and because even apart from these things it is in itself worthy of no account. But in the case of the King of all, "who holds not a part of the earth but the whole circle of the earth," or rather of the one who comprehends it all "in His hand" and measures the heavens "with a span," of the one who upholds all things "by the word of His power," before whom all the nations were accounted as nothing and as spittle, in his case, shall we not consider it the ultimate punishment not to be numbered in that choir around him, but will we even be content if we are only delivered from Gehenna? And what could be more pitiful than this soul? This King, then, does not come to judge the earth in this way, having a team of white mules, or a golden chariot, or wearing purple and a diadem. But how? Hear the prophets crying out and saying, as far as it is possible for men to speak; for one says: "God will come openly, our God, and will not keep silent; a fire will burn before him, and around him a mighty tempest; he will summon the heaven above and the earth, to judge his people." And Isaiah sets before us the punishment itself, saying thus: "Behold, the day of the Lord comes, incurable with wrath and anger, to make the whole world desolate, and to destroy the sinners from it. For the stars of heaven and Orion and all the host of heaven will not give their light, and the sun will be darkened in its going forth, and the moon will not give its light. And I will command evils for the whole world and their sins for the ungodly

ἆρ' οὐκ ἂν ἅπαντα ἔπραξας ὥστε τῆς ἐπαγγελίας ταύτης τυχεῖν; Ἀναπέτασον οὖν καὶ νῦν τῷ νῷ τοὺς οὐρανοὺς καὶ βλέψον εἰς ἐκεῖνο τὸ θέατρον, οὐκ ἀπὸ τοιούτων συγκείμενον ἀνδρῶν, ἀλλ' ἀπ' ἐκείνων οἳ καὶ τοῦ χρυσοῦ καὶ τῶν λίθων τῶν τιμίων καὶ τῶν ἀκτίνων τῶν ἡλιακῶν καὶ πάσης ὁρωμένης φαιδρότητός εἰσιν τιμιώτεροι, καὶ οὐκ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων δὲ μόνον ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν πολὺ τούτων τιμιωτέρων ἀγγέλων, ἀρχαγγέλων, θρόνων, κυριοτήτων, ἀρχῶν, ἐξουσιῶν. Περὶ γὰρ τοῦ βασιλέως οὐδὲ εἰπεῖν ἑνί, οἷός ἐστιν, δυνατόν· οὕτως ἅπαντα λόγον καὶ νοῦν ἐκεῖνο διαφεύγει τὸ κάλλος, ἡ ὡραιότης, τὸ κράτος, ἡ δόξα, ἡ μεγαλωσύνη, ἡ μεγαλοπρέπεια. Τοσούτων οὖν ἀγαθῶν καὶ τηλικούτων ἀποστερήσωμεν ἑαυτούς, εἰπέ μοι, ἵνα μὴ μικρὸν πονέσωμεν χρόνον; Εἰ γὰρ μυρίους καθ' ἑκάστην ἡμέραν θανάτους ὑπομένειν ἐχρῆν, εἰ γὰρ τὴν γέενναν αὐτὴν ὑπὲρ τοῦ τὸν Χριστὸν ἐρχόμενον ἰδεῖν ἐν τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰς τὸν τῶν ἁγίων ἐγκαταλεγῆναι χορόν, οὐκ ἐχρῆν ἅπαντα ὑπομένειν ἐκεῖνα; Ἄκουσον τί φησιν ὁ μακάριος Πέτρος· «Καλόν ἐστιν ἡμᾶς ὧδε εἶναι.» Εἰ δὲ ἐκεῖνος ἀμυδράν τινα τῶν μελλόντων εἰκόνα ἰδὼν ἅπαντα ἐξαίφνης ἔρριψεν ἀπὸ τῆς ψυχῆς διὰ τὴν ἀπὸ τῆς ὄψεως ἐκείνης ἡδονὴν ἐντεθεῖσαν αὐτοῦ τῇ ψυχῇ, τί ἄν τις εἴποι, ὅταν αὐτὴ τῶν πραγμάτων ἡ ἀλήθεια παραγένηται, ὅταν τῶν βασιλείων ἀνοιγέντων κατοπτεύειν ἐξῇ τὸν βασιλέα αὐτόν, μηκέτι ἐν αἰνίγματι μηδὲ δι' εἰσόπτρου, ἀλλὰ πρόσωπον πρὸς πρόσωπον, μηκέτι διὰ πίστεως ἀλλὰ διὰ εἴδους;

12 Οἱ μὲν οὖν πολλοὶ τῶν ἀλογώτερον διακειμένων τὸ τῆς γεέννης ἀπαλλαγῆναι ἀγαπητὸν τίθενται μόνον· ἐγὼ δὲ τῆς γεέννης πολλῷ χαλεπωτέραν κόλασιν εἶναί φημι τὸ μὴ γενέσθαι ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ δόξῃ, καὶ τὸν ἐκπεσόντα ἐκεῖθεν οὐχ οὕτως οἶμαι δεῖν πενθεῖν τὰ ἐν τῇ γεέννῃ κακά, ὡς τὴν ἀπόπτωσιν τὴν ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν· τοῦτο γὰρ μόνον ἁπάντων χαλεπώτερον εἰς κολάσεως λόγον ἐστίν. Νῦν δὲ βασιλέα μὲν πολλάκις ὁρῶντες μετὰ πολλῶν τῶν δορυφόρων εἰς τὰ βασίλεια εἰσελαύνοντα, τοὺς πλησίον ὄντας αὐτοῦ καὶ λόγου καὶ γνώμης κοινωνοῦντας καὶ τῆς δόξης μετέχοντας τῆς λοιπῆς μακαρίζομεν· κἂν μυρία μὲν ἔχωμεν ἀγαθά, ταλανίζομεν ἑαυτοὺς καὶ οὐδενὸς ἐκείνων λαμβάνομεν αἴσθησιν, εἰς τὴν δόξαν ἀφορῶντες τῶν περὶ αὐτόν, καίτοι γε εἰδότες ἐπισφαλῆ καὶ ἀβέβαιον τὴν τοιαύτην λαμπρότητα καὶ διὰ τοὺς πολέμους καὶ διὰ τὰς ἐπιβουλὰς καὶ διὰ τὰς βασκανίας καὶ διὰ τὸ καὶ χωρὶς τούτων αὐτὴν καθ' ἑαυτὴν οὐδενὸς ἀξίαν εἶναι λόγου· ἐπὶ δὲ τοῦ πάντων βασιλέως, «τοῦ κατέχοντος-οὐ μέρος τῆς γῆς ἀλλὰ-πάντα τὸν γῦρον τῆς γῆς», μᾶλλον δὲ τοῦ πᾶσαν αὐτὴν περιλαμβάνοντος «ἐν δρακὶ» καὶ τοὺς οὐρανοὺς μετροῦντος «σπιθαμῇ», τοῦ πάντα φέροντος «τῷ ῥήματι τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ», ᾧ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ὡς οὐδὲν καὶ ὡς σίελος ἐλογίσθησαν, ἐπὶ τούτου δὲ οὐχ ἡγησόμεθα ἐσχάτην εἶναι κόλασιν τὸ μὴ καταλεγῆναι εἰς τὸν χορὸν ἐκεῖνον τὸν περὶ αὐτόν, ἀλλὰ καὶ στέρξομεν ἂν τῆς γεέννης ἀπαλλαγῶμεν μόνον; Καὶ τί ταύτης ἐλεεινότερον γένοιτ' ἂν τῆς ψυχῆς; Οὗτος τοίνυν ὁ βασιλεὺς οὐ ζεῦγος ἔχων ἡμιόνων λευκῶν, οὐδὲ ὄχημα χρυσοῦν, οὐδὲ ἁλουργίδα καὶ διάδημα περικείμενος οὕτως ἔρχεται κρινῶν τὴν γῆν. Ἀλλὰ πῶς; Ἄκουσον τῶν προφητῶν βοώντων καὶ λεγόντων, ὡς ἀνθρώποις εἰπεῖν δυνατόν· ὁ μὲν γάρ φησιν· «Ὁ θεὸς ἐμφανῶς ἥξει ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν, καὶ οὐ παρασιωπήσεται· πῦρ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ καυθήσεται, καὶ κύκλῳ αὐτοῦ καταιγὶς σφοδρά· προσκαλέσεται τὸν οὐρανὸν ἄνω καὶ τὴν γῆν τοῦ διακρῖναι τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ.» Ὁ δὲ Ἡσαΐας καὶ τὴν κόλασιν αὐτὴν ἡμῖν προτίθησιν, οὑτωσὶ λέγων· «Ἰδοὺ ἡμέρα Κυρίου ἔρχεται ἀνίατος θυμοῦ καὶ ὀργῆς, θεῖναι τὴν οἰκουμένην ὅλην ἔρημον, καὶ τοὺς ἁμαρτωλοὺς ἀπολέσαι ἐξ αὐτῆς. Οἱ γὰρ ἀστέρες τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ὁ Ὠρίων καὶ πᾶς ὁ κόσμος τοῦ οὐρανοῦ τὸ φῶς αὐτῶν οὐ δώσουσι καὶ σκοτισθήσεται ὁ ἥλιος ἐν τῇ ἐξόδῳ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἡ σελήνη οὐ δώσει τὸ φέγγος αὐτῆς. Καὶ ἐντελοῦμαι ὅλῃ τῇ οἰκουμένῃ κακὰ καὶ τοῖς ἀσεβέσιν τὰς ἁμαρτίας
