For I gladly now linger on the man, contemplating the beauty of his virtue. The sun, rising and sending forth its brilliant rays, does not so delight my eyes as the face of Paul illuminates my mind; for the sun enlightens the eyes, but Paul makes them take wing to the very vaults of the heavens; for he makes the soul both higher than the sun and loftier than the moon; for such is the power of virtue; it makes a man an angel, it gives wings to the soul to heaven. This virtue Paul teaches us; let us strive to become imitators of his virtue. But we must not depart from the subject at hand; for the purpose was to show 49.292 humility as the third way of repentance, that the publican was not humble-minded, but spoke the truth, laying bare his own sins, and became righteous, not by paying money, nor by crossing seas, nor by traveling a long road on foot, nor by traversing boundless seas, nor by asking friends, nor by spending much time, but through humility he obtained righteousness, being deemed worthy of the kingdom of heaven; may we all attain to it, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
DISCOURSE OF THE SAME On almsgiving, and on the ten virgins. Homily 3. 1. Do you know, from where our discourse previously began, or where it left off, or from what subject to what conclusion the words of the former homily came? But I think you have forgotten where our discourse paused; but I know, and I do not blame you for this nor do I accuse you. For each of you has a wife, and cares for children, and looks after all the affairs of the household; some are also occupied in military service, and others are artisans; and each of you is occupied with various needs. But we are engaged in these things, and in these we meditate, and in these we spend our time; so you are not to be blamed for this, but to be praised for your earnestness, because you do not forsake us for a single Lord's day, but despising all things you come to church. For this is the greatest encomium of our city, not having noises and suburbs, nor gold-roofed houses and banquet-halls, but having an earnest and aroused populace. For we do not judge the nobility of a tree from its leaves, but from its fruit. For because of this we have been honored above the irrational animals, in that we have reason, and partake of reason, and love reason; for a man who does not love reason is much more irrational than the beasts, not knowing why he was honored, and from where he has his honor. And well did the prophet say: Man being in honor did not understand; he is compared to the senseless beasts, and is become like them. You are a rational man, and you do not love reason? Tell me, what excuse will you have? Therefore you are more necessary to me than all, who are winged toward the word of virtue, and who count all things as secondary to the divine words. Come then, let us take up the subject, and let us speak the things that follow what was previously said 49.292; for I am in your debt, and I gladly pay the debt; for it does not bring me poverty, but gathers wealth. For in the case of external affairs, debtors flee their creditors so as not to repay, but I pursue you in order to repay, and very reasonably so; for in the case of external affairs, repayment works poverty, but in the case of the word, repayment begets wealth. What I mean is this: I owe money to someone; if I pay this, it cannot be both with him and with me, but from me on the one hand

Οὐ γὰρ ἐκ τῶν φύλλων τὴν εὐγένειαν τοῦ δένδρου, ἀλλ' ἐκ τῶν καρπῶν ἐπιγινώσκομεν. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο γὰρ τῶν ἀλόγων ζώων προτετιμήμεθα ἐν τῷ λόγον ἔχειν, καὶ λόγου μεταλαμβάνειν, καὶ λόγου ἐρᾷν· ἄνθρωπος γὰρ μὴ ἐρῶν λόγου, πολὺ ἀλογώτερος τῶν κτηνῶν ἐστι, μὴ εἰδὼς διὰ τί ἐτιμήθη, καὶ πόθεν ἔχει τὴν τιμήν. Καὶ καλῶς ἔλεγεν ὁ προφήτης· Ἄνθρωπος ἐν τιμῇ ὢν οὐ συνῆκε· παρασυνεβλήθη τοῖς κτήνεσι τοῖς ἀνοήτοις, καὶ ὡμοιώθη αὐτοῖς. Ἄνθρωπος λογικὸς ὢν, λόγου οὐκ ἐρᾷς; εἰπέ μοι, καὶ ποίαν ἕξεις συγγνώμην; Ὥστε ὑμεῖς ἐμοὶ πάντων ἀναγκαιότεροι οἱ πρὸς τὸν λόγον τῆς ἀρετῆς ἀναπτερούμενοι, καὶ πάντα τῶν θείων λόγων δεύτερα τιθέντες.
