doubt about the good things laid up for you. For He who raises the dead, who heals the blind, who casts out demons, who cleanses lepers, who corrects diseases, who looses death, who is able to do so many and so great things in a perishable and mortal body, what pardon will you obtain for doubting the resurrection? For if, when the time of recompense has not yet come, but while the contests are still at hand, God has rewarded us with so many crowns, consider how many good things He will give you at the time of the rewards. But if someone should say: 'But we do not see these signs happening now, nor do we have such power'; I would say this, that it makes no difference whether these things happened now or before. 50.432 For that they happened before by the apostles, the Churches everywhere in the world bear witness, and peoples, and cities, and nations that ran to the unlearned and fishermen. For the unlettered and poor and needy and lowly would not have prevailed over the world, if they had not had the help of the signs. But neither have you been made destitute of the grace of the Spirit, but many symbols of that gift remain even now, much greater and more wonderful than those just enumerated; for it is not the same thing to raise a dead body, and to deliver a soul that has been put to death by sins from that destruction, which happens through baptism; it is not the same thing to drive away diseases of the flesh, and to put away a burden of sins; it is not the same thing to correct a blinded eye, and to illuminate a darkened soul with light. For if the pledge of the Spirit were not also now, baptism would not be established, the remission of sins would not have happened, nor righteousness and sanctification, nor would we have received adoption, nor would we have partaken of the mysteries; for the mystical body and blood could never come into being apart from the grace of the Spirit; we would not have had priests; for it is not possible for these ordinations to take place without that visitation. And one could mention many other symbols of the grace of the Spirit. So you too have the pledge of the Spirit, and have put away the death of the soul, and the blinding of your thoughts, and have stripped off the unclean life. Let us not therefore be distressed about the future, having received such pledges; but having gathered from all quarters the argument for the resurrection, let us also show a life worthy of these doctrines, that we may also obtain the immovable good things, which surpass all reason and human understanding; may it be that we all attain them, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom be glory to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.
