of the harbour, he brought the 1.8.8 shore of the sea to a transformation of a marketplace. For the sea here, being exceedingly calm, shares 1.8.9 in transactions with the land. And the seafaring merchants, having moored their skiffs beside the projection of the rocks, trade with the people of the land from their decks the 1.8.10 merchandise. A courtyard after the shore lies before the church as a marketplace. And the courtyard in its colour resembles beautiful and Chian 1.8.11 marbles. And those who take their walks here are delighted by the beauty of the stones, rejoice in the sight of the sea, and luxuriate in the mingled breezes stirred up both from the surf and from the hills rising over the 1.8.12 land. A circular portico surrounds the church, leaving a gap only on the eastern side. In the middle the sanctuary has been adorned with countless colours 1.8.13 of stone. A lofty roof is suspended in a dome. Who, by recounting them, could describe in a manner worthy of the work the suspended porticoes, the underlying structures, the charm of the marbles with which both the walls and 1.8.14 the floors are completely clothed? And in addition to these things, an extraordinary amount of gold is poured all over the sanctuary as if 1.8.15 it had grown there naturally. Having said so much, the precinct of John the Baptist has also been described by me, which the Emperor Justinian recently dedicated to him in the place called 1.8.16 Hebdomon. For both precincts happen to be very similar to one another, except, of course, that the one of the Baptist does not happen to be on the sea. 1.8.17 So, then, the church of the Archangel in the place called Anaplus 1.8.18 has been built in this way. But on the opposite shore a certain place is situated a little way from the sea, level by nature, but 1.8.19 rising high by a construction of stone. Here the precinct of the Archangel has been built, extraordinary in beauty, first in size, and in its lavishness worthy of being dedicated to 1.8. Michael, and of being dedicated by the Emperor Justinian. And not far from this church he renewed a holy precinct to the Mother of God in the same manner, which had fallen into ruin long before, the sanctity of which it would be a long task both to investigate and to describe in words; but the long-awaited portion of the history follows. 1.9.1 On this very shore there happened to be from ancient times a noteworthy palace. This Emperor Justinian dedicated entirely to God, exchanging the immediate gratification for the fruit of piety which comes from it, in the following 1.9.2 way. There was in Byzantium a crowd of women prostituted in a brothel not voluntarily, but through a certain violent 1.9.3 compulsion. For, being maintained by a brothel-keeper because of their extreme poverty, it was necessary for them to be debauched every day, and they were compelled to be paired suddenly with unknown and casual 1.9.4 men. For here from of old there was a large guild of brothel-keepers, who managed the business of licentiousness in a workshop, selling the beauty of others in the public part of the marketplace 1.9.5 and enslaving chastity. But Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora (for they did everything sharing their piety with each other) devised the following. 1.9.6 They cleansed the state of the pollution of the brothels, driving out the name of the brothel-keepers, and they freed the women who were suffering from great poverty from slavish licentiousness, having provided for them an independent livelihood and a free chastity. These things, then, 1.9.7 they arranged in this way. And on this shore of the strait, which is on the right as one sails into the so-called Euxine Pontus, they established a magnificent monastery in what was formerly a palace, to be a refuge for women repenting 1.9.8 of their former life; so that by their future occupation here in matters concerning God and piety they might be able to purge away the sins of their life 1.9.9 in the brothel. For which reason they also call this dwelling-place of the women Metanoia (Repentance), giving it a name appropriate to its 1.9.10 function. And these sovereigns have endowed this monastery with many revenues of money, and many buildings in beauty and lavishness
