How could he receive glory from me, the humbled one? For entirely without need is the creator of the sun, he who fills the universe with all good things 20 (38) possessing the power by a nod of his will. At this my tongue is at a loss for words and my mind sees what is happening, but does not explain it; it sees and wants to speak and finds no word; for it beholds invisible things, completely without form, 25 simple, in every way uncompounded, infinite in magnitude. For it perceives neither a beginning, nor does it see an end at all? The whole, I think, is seen summed up; not in its essence, certainly, but by participation. For from a fire you kindle and you receive a whole fire, and that one remains undivided, undiminished as before, except that what is imparted is separated from the first and becomes many lamps; for it is corporeal. But that One is spiritual, being indivisible, 35 and is completely inseparable and undivided; for when it is imparted it is not divided into many, but both remains undivided and exists in me; it rises up within me from inside my wretched heart like a sun or like a spherical disk of the sun being shown, luminous, for it is like light. I do not know, as has been said, what to say about this, and I would wish to be silent, if only I could, but the awesome wonder moves my heart and opens my defiled mouth, and makes me, though unwilling, both speak and write. He who just now has risen in my dark heart, who has shown me wondrous things, which eyes have not seen, who has descended even into me as into the last of all, who has shown me to be a disciple and son of an apostle, me whom the terrible and man-slaying dragon (39) formerly had as a worker and minister of all lawlessness, the sun before the ages who shone in Hades, and later enlightened my darkened soul and granted to me a day without evening, 55 a thing unbelievable to those like me who are slothful and lazy, he who has filled with all good things the poverty in me, may he himself also grant the word and provide the utterances to narrate to all your wondrous works and what you do today with us your servants, 60 so that those who are sleeping in the darkness of laziness and saying: It is impossible for sinners to be saved and, like Peter and the other apostles, saints, holy and just ones, for them to be shown mercy, may know and learn, that this is easy for your goodness, was and is and will be! And those who think they have you, the light of all the world, and saying they do not see you, that they do not live in light,
