all things are by him and in him. For his word, coming forth, being all-perfect and fruitful and creative, falling upon a fruitful nature, in fruitful water, made the water pregnant." Having spoken thus, Hermes prayed: "I adjure you, worker of the great heaven, I adjure you, voice of the father, which he first uttered as his only-begotten word, be propitious." Of these words the holy Cyril also made mention, saying that even Hermes Trismegistus confessed a trinity. And Sesostris, after his victory, taking possession of Egypt, died. And after him there arose as king over Egypt Pharaoh, who was also called Narecho, reigning, as they say, for fifty years; from him the kings descended from his family are called Pharaoh. Thus far the kingdoms of the Egyptians. And in the times of Picus, who is also Zeus, there appeared a certain one from the tribe of Japheth in the land of the Argives, called Inachus. He, having reigned in it, founded the city Io, and he called it Iopolis in the name of the moon; for the Argives call the moon Io. And he had a daughter Io; from her Zeus had a daughter, Libya. This Io, when she had lain with Zeus, being ashamed of her father, fled to Egypt, and there, finding Hermes as king, she crossed over to Mount Silpius in Syria, where Seleucus 1.38 the Macedonian later, in the name of his own son, built the great Antioch. There, then, Io died. But Inachus, her father, having sent many in search of her, and indeed also her brothers, commanded that if they did not bring her back, they themselves should not return. But they, having crossed Egypt and come to Syria, see in a dream a heifer prophesying with a human voice thus: "Here I am, Io." Having awakened, therefore, they built a temple and a city there, which they also named Iopolis, and remained, not daring to return to Inachus. But Libya her daughter, whom she had from Zeus, was married to Poseidon, the son of Cronus and brother of Zeus. To them three children, Agenor and Belus and Enyalius, were born. Of these, Belus married Sida, from whom he had sons Aegyptus and Danaus, from whom the country is also called Egypt; and Agenor, going to Phoenicia, married Tyro, from whom were born Cadmus and Phoenix and Syrus and Cilix and a daughter called Europa. And Agenor founded Tyre, in the name of Tyro his wife, and he reigned in those parts for 63 years. And they say that Taurus, who was king of Crete in those times, attacking Tyre with a naval battle while Agenor was making war elsewhere with his own force, took Tyre in the evening, and took many other captives, and indeed Europa, daughter of Agenor, whom he also made his wife, and named the whole land of 1.39 Japheth Europa, just as Poseidon named the land of Ham Libya after Libya his wife. Hence the poets confessed that Zeus, having taken the form of a bull, seized Europa. This Taurus also built the city of Gortyna in Crete in the name of his mother, and he had a son from Europa whom he named Minos. And Agenor, when he was about to die, sent much money to Crete through his son Cadmus to his daughter Europa. And dividing the land subject to him among his sons, he assigned Tyre and its surroundings to Phoenix and named the land under him Phoenicia. Similarly also he named the lands allotted to his sons Syrus and Cilix Syria and Cilicia. In the times of this Phoenix they say that Heracles the philosopher, the one called the Tyrian, discovered the so-called conchylion, as has been said.

Moreover Zeus, in addition to the others, having persuaded with much gold the guards of Danae, the daughter of Acrisius who was descended from the Argives, a very beautiful woman who was being guarded in a chamber by the sea, and having seized and violated her, had from her a son named Perseus. Hence the mythologists say that Zeus gold
