and four epistles. And seven catholic, of which, one of James, and two of Peter, and three of John again; and Jude is the seventh. You have them all. If anything is outside of these, it is not among the genuine ones. 475 XIII. Patriarchs, sons of Jacob. And twelve patriarchs from the great father Jacob; Reuben, and Simeon, and Levi, and after them Judah. But then the illegitimate, Dan, Naphtali, Gad and Asher; Again the well-born from the wives, Issachar was, Zebulun, and Joseph, and last Benjamin. XIV. The Plagues of Egypt. Always count the plagues of evil-minded Egypt, that you may tremble at the great power. First, the water of the land was reddened with blood, Second, it boiled forth destructive frogs. Third again, the air and land were covered with gnats. 476 And a dog-fly appeared fourthly, suddenly. Fifth, a grievous plague afflicted the four-footed animals. Boils on the bodies of men, a sixth woe. Seventh, it rained hail in the midst of fire, an unmixed storm. Eighth, all green things were destroyed by the locust. Ninth, night covered the land of Egypt And the death of the first-born was the tenth torment. XV. The Decalogue of Moses. And God inscribed the ten laws once on stone tablets; but you, inscribe them for me on your heart. You shall not know another God, since reverence is for one alone. You shall not set up an empty phantom, and a breathless image. 477 You shall never mention the great God in vain. Keep all Sabbaths, sublime and shadowy. Blessed, if you show to your parents the grace which is fitting. To flee the curse of a man-slaying hand, and of another's bed, and evil-minded theft, and false testimony, and desire for another's things, a spark of death. XVI. On the miracles of the prophet Elijah and Elisha. So many are the miracles of Elijah the Tishbite. First he was fed by ravens; and second he fed abundantly a widow of Zarephath, with small remnants of oil and flour; Whose son he also raised from the dead with his breaths. And he held back the rain from God, 478 then he let it go. Having sanctified the sacrifice with a strange fire and strange things, then he endured without tasting food for many days He utterly burned up two captains of fifty. He crossed the Jordan, dividing it with his mantle; And he went up to heaven in a chariot of fire, At the same time he left both his sheepskin and his grace to Elisha. Behold also his miracles; He crossed the Jordan, dividing it with the mantle. He made the springs fruitful for the city with salt. And he destroyed the insolent youths with wild beasts He brought streams from Edom for the thirsty army; and he delivered a woman from debt with springs of oil; and to the Shunammite woman 479 he gave a son who was not, and again from the dead. And he stopped destruction from a plant, and for many he averted famine with insufficient food. And having cleansed Naaman the Syrian of leprosy, he sends the disease to Gehazi; then an axe-head floated on the surface from the depths of the Jordan; And having blinded the sight of the Syrians who were dragging him, he gave them to their enemies; then for the army he foretold satiety, the work of lepers. And a dead man raised a dead man, when their bones were placed near together. XVII. Epigram on the testimony of Elijah called Chereion. This, stranger, is also Zarephath of Sidon, 480 And this is the tower of the widow, who hospitably the prophet of God, Elijah the Tishbite, when famine was afflicting the cities, received; Who also had a little oil in the flask, And a handful of flour hidden in a jar. But having shared this unsparingly with the stranger, she found the gift to be a spring, nourishing her household. Her son, Elijah made alive
