innovations are made concerning the word. This is more honorable than many vigils and sleeping on the ground, the profit of which extends only to those who succeed. This is worthy of the man's famous exiles and flights; for in behalf of those things for which he chose to suffer those things, these things also were earnestly pursued after he had suffered. And he continued to do the same in other matters also; praising some, striking others moderately; and stirring up the sluggishness of some, restraining the fervor of others; and taking care for some, that they might not stumble; and contriving for others, that they might be corrected after stumbling; simple in manner, manifold in governance; wise in speech, wiser in thought; plain for the more humble, more lofty for the more sublime; a lover of strangers, a protector of suppliants, 35.1128 an averter of evil, truly one in all things, as many as the children of the Hellenes attribute separately to their own gods. I will add also a presider over marriage, and a protector of virgins, and a peacemaker, and a reconciler, and an escort for those hastening from hence. O how many names the virtue of the man provides for me, willing to call him from every side!

37. Having lived thus, and been instructed and having instructed, so that his life and manner were the standard of the episcopate, and his doctrines the law of orthodoxy, what reward does he receive for his piety? For it is not right to overlook this either. In a good old age he ends his life, and is gathered to his fathers, patriarchs, and prophets, and apostles, and martyrs, who contended for the truth. And, to say a brief epitaph, his departure is honored with more costly honors than his entrances; having stirred many tears, but having deposited in the minds of all a greater glory concerning him than what was seen. But, O dear and sacred head, who, among your other good qualities, pre-eminently honored the measures of both speech and silence, for us you may stop the speech here, even if it is rather wanting in truth, yet not falling short of what is possible; but may you yourself from above watch over us graciously, and lead this people, a perfect worshipper of the perfect Trinity, which is contemplated and adored in Father, and Son, and Holy Spirit; and as for us, if it be in peace, may you hold and shepherd us with yourself; but if in war, may you lead us back or receive us to yourself, and place us with yourself and those like you, even if what is asked is great, in Christ Himself our Lord; to whom be all glory, honor, and power unto the ages. Amen.
