53 He is both one and, though divided among many, is not diminished, but even being by himself, he exhibits the same quality of the whole. And though passing over and being divided into the symbols of his passion, he is the same one who is at work and works wonders and performs supernatural prodigies for the apostolic church; thus nothing belonging to the chief is empty or inactive, nothing inglorious, nothing without a share in the wonders from God.

54 But you, Peter, rock and foundation of the Church of Christ, the chief summit of the apostles, the genuine and fervent disciple of Christ, who used more boldness toward him than the others, who proclaimed him Son of the Living God, who was entrusted with the keys of the kingdom of heaven, both to bind and to loose in heaven the things bound and loosed by you on earth, the most loud-voiced herald of the incarnation of Christ, who transferred those of the legal circumcision to the uncircumcision of the knowledge of God, who for Christ’s sake left all things and acquired him alone instead of all wealth, who received from him the power to put to death and to make alive, for reasons which he revealed to you, the pillar stretched up from earth to heaven and guiding those hastening to the mansions there, who through the simplicity of a fisherman made foolish the craft of the Greeks, who spoke in the divine Spirit, and by a word alone transformed things according to his will, who underwent that painful crucifixion, that in nothing you might fall short of the sufferings of the master, who wore these chains like an evildoer and made them a spring of healings, be present today with compassion, visit here unseen, stand by this wonder-working shrine of yours and what is exceptionally honored by your holy calling [f. 176 ro], in which you were pleased for your precious chains to be treasured, in which you decreed for these to be stored as most sacred heirlooms, in which, being set forth and seen by all the faithful, they cause to gush forth abundantly for those who desire them the intelligible streams of wonders from you. With these bind up the wounds of our souls. With these, having lanced the swellings and inflammations from our transgressions, heal them over with intelligible medicines. With these, as with a weapon of goodwill, crown the flock of Christ.

With these make the barbarians captives; make them prisoners of war, and render them as spoils of war for the city that honors you. And above all, our pious and most faithful emperor, instead of military weapons, arm him with these, fence him around, guard him about, crown him with victories and trophies, make him fearsome to his enemies, render him beloved to his subjects, so that, being peacefully ruled and governed by him, we may lead a quiet and tranquil life, glorifying our true God, whom you have always glorified and magnified, because to him is due all honor and worship, with the unoriginate Father and the co-natural and consubstantial Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
