having received the character of the nation through circumcision. So it is from Adam until Abraham 2745 years. And Abraham was 100 years old when he begot Isaac, and 59 Isaac begot Jacob who is called Israel. The Jews were named after Judah, the fourth son of Jacob; for he had twelve sons. The tribe of Judah prevailed over the Jews and governed; from whence they also got the name. In these times, from the tribe of Japheth, a certain man named Hesiod appeared; who invented the Greek letters, and having arranged the letters, he first set them forth for the Greeks. And in the times of Abraham, Endelechos, from the tribe of Shem, son of Noah, reigned over the Assyrians, reigning as their first king after the race of Perseus had failed. and the kingdom came again to the Assyrians. And of the Egyptians, the first king to reign from the tribe of Ham, son of Noah, was Pharaoh, who is also called Naracho. The ancient kingdoms of the Egyptians before this man, therefore, the most wise Manetho set forth, as has been said before. But the later kingdoms of the Egyptians, I mean from Naracho and downwards, the most wise chronicler Theophilus therefore wrote down. In the times of Abraham, Naracho from the tribe of Ham reigned over the Egyptians. And Potiphar, the chief cook of the same king Pharaoh, bought from the Saracens Joseph, the son of Jacob; whom his brothers sold to the Saracens, being jealous of him, as he was beloved by his own 60 father; and Joseph was handsome in appearance. This Joseph interpreted the vision to king Pharaoh, which he saw concerning the famine that was about to come upon Egypt and upon every country for 7 years. And the king, marveling at the wisdom of Joseph, freed him, and gave him great honor and the daughter of the high priest of Heliopolis, which is in Egypt, as a wife, commanding him to administer all of Egypt for 7 years and to have authority to act as he wished. This Joseph built granaries, and stored up grain in them for the seven years, and he supplied everywhere by himself both the purchasing and the distribution of the sale, doing as he himself wished. And when the famine came upon all the land, his brothers came from the land of Canaan to Egypt to buy grain. And Joseph, recognizing them, ordered them to be detained, and he made bold to them that he was their brother, and he compelled them to depart and bring to him his younger brother Benjamin and his father Jacob and all his kindred. And his brothers, having departed, brought to Joseph their father and their brother Benjamin and all their kindred, 75 names of males and females. And Joseph kept them there, and they dwelt in Egypt for many years; and an infinite multitude of Hebrews came from them, dwelling in Egypt until Moses who was commanded by God to lead out 61 the people of the Hebrews from the land of Egypt, as all these things are accurately recorded in the Hebrew writings. And in the times of the aforementioned kings, there appeared in the country of Caria a giant-born philosopher from the tribe of Japheth, named Endymion; who, speaking mystic prayers to the moon, asked her to learn from her the divine name in a vision. And while he was praying he fell into a sleep and heard the divine name in a vision; and he no longer arose, but his remains are in Caria until now, being thus a dead body that trembles; and each year they open his coffin in that country, and they see his remains trembling, though dead, as they say. These things the most wise Auleas wrote; concerning whom, he says, the historians record that the moon loves Endymion. It is therefore from Abraham until the exodus of the sons of Israel with
