especially extraordinary, which would be a comfort to the women, they built, so that being forced by nothing they would in no way shrink from the practices of chastity. So much, then, for these matters. 1.9.11 And for one going from here to the Euxine Sea a precipitous promontory juts out beside the shore of the strait, on which stood a shrine of Saint Panteleemon, both built neglectfully in the beginning and exceedingly dilapidated by long time; which the Emperor Justinian removed from there, and having built in a most magnificent manner this church that is now there, he both preserved the honor for the martyr and added beauty to the strait, having established these sanctuaries on ei1.9.12 ther side. And in front of this precinct, in a place called Argyronion, there was from of old a poor-house for those whom disease had 1.9.13 irremediably maimed. which, already in the last stages of ruin from time, he restored with all zeal, to be a place of rest for those so afflicted. And there is a certain shore, Mochadion by name, near the place, which is even now na1.9.14 med Hieron. Here he built another church to the Archangel, both exceedingly sacred and in dignity inferior to none of the Archangel’s sanctuaries which I just mentioned. 1.9.15 And he also dedicated a sanctuary to Tryphon the martyr, with much labor and time fashioned to a beauty altogether indescribable, in the street of the city which is na1.9.16 med after the Stork. Furthermore, to Menas and Menaios the martyrs he dedicated a shrine in the Hebdomon. And on the left for one entering the so-called Golden Gates, finding the shrine of Saint Ia having fal1.9.17 len down, he restored it with all magnificence. Such then are the things done by the Emperor Justinian concerning the sanctuaries in Byzantium, but as for the things accomplished throughout the entire Roman Empire, to enumerate them one by one is both diffi1.9.18 cult and utterly impossible in words. But whenever it will be necessary for us to mention by name some city or place, the sanctuaries there also will be described at the appropriate time. 1.10.1 The works, then, concerning the sanctuaries both in Constantinople and in its suburbs have been thus con1.10.2 structed by the Emperor Justinian; but as for the other buildings constructed by him, it is not easy to go over each one in words, but to speak in summary, the most numerous and most noteworthy parts both of the rest of the city and of the palace, which had been burned down and razed to the ground, he rebuilt them all and transformed them to a more becoming state; which it seemed to me not at all necessary to describe in detail at present 1.10.3 to be. For all these have been described by me with exactness in my writings on the wars. But this much only shall be written at present, that of the palace both the propylaea and the so-called Chalke as far as the so-called house of Ares, and, from the palace, both the Bath of Zeuxippus and the great stoas and all the adjacent buildings on both sides as far as the forum which is named after Constantine, these1.10.4 things happen to be the works of this emperor. And in addition to these, the house named after Hormisdas, being very near the palace, he altered and altogether remodeled to a more conspicuous form, so that it was fittingly appropriate to the palace, and incorporated it into the Palace, and in this way he made it both more spacious and much more worthy still. 1.10.5 And there is a certain forum before the palace, surrounded by columns. The people of Byzantium call the forum the Augusteum. I made mention of this in the preceding account, when, after describing the church of Sophia, I described the bronze statue to the Emperor for the work, set on a very high column made of joined stones, 1.10.6 which had been set up, I have described. On the eastern side of this forum is situated the Senate House, beyond description both in its magnificence and in its entire construction, the work of Emperor 1.10.7 Justinian. There indeed, assembling at the beginning of the year, the Roman senate holds an annual festival, celebrating the 1.10.8 sacred rites of the state forever. And six columns stand in front of it, two of which have the wall of the Senate House between them, which is turned towards the setting sun, and the other four a little outside, white in appearance
