Holy. For his sin was forgiven him, but the Spirit was not given to him. For he himself asked; but nowhere do we find a response saying, "I have given to you." Pay attention, I beseech you; He wrote the fiftieth, sixtieth, seventieth, eightieth, ninetieth, and hundredth. He also writes another psalm after the hundredth, after many other psalms, saying, The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet. Therefore, we find this psalm, uttered after the sin, spoken in the Holy Spirit. From where is this clear? Christ revealed it. For since he had done all things, he bridled the sea, cleansed lepers, drove out demons, cast out evil, strengthened the paralytic, a voice came down from above: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, listen to him; the Lord bore witness to him, the deeds cried out, the Spirit came upon him in the form of a dove, John bore witness to him: Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world; then as he was about to go up to the cross, he called them and says to them: What do you think about the Christ? I did not ask you at the beginning; I did not bear witness to you at the beginning, because I had not yet given you proof of divinity. But when all the elements showed my divinity, when the Father, when the concord with him, when my teaching had led everyone there by the hand, when you do not even have a shadow of a contradiction, What do you now think about the Christ? Whose son is he? Those ungrateful and shameless ones say, David’s, denying his divinity, and not wanting to say that he is of God. What then did he say? How then does David in the Holy Spirit call me Lord, saying: The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet? If David had the Spirit, the sin was loosed; and if the sin was loosed, he also received his request. For David says: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do you see that he returned again to his own dignity? Again he became a prophet, again he speaks about Christ, again he received back his boldness, and the sin did not harm him at all. Have you seen how great is the power of repentance? What am I saying? Both living and dying he was strong. Once barbarians came and were besieging the city. Hezekiah, being righteous, was calling upon God and beseeching, saying: Have mercy on me, Lord, and spare this city. The prophet Isaiah comes to him and says, so that he might not think that his righteousness was heard; and yet David had died and was a thousand years in Hades; what then does he say? I will defend you and this city for my own sake and for the sake of David my servant. David died, and his boldness lives, and the one who had died stood before the living one. O, the righteous one who even after death fights for the walls! But here I will end my discourse, having given, as I think, a sufficient solution to the questions, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

ἁγίου. Ἡ μὲν γὰρ ἁμαρτία αὐτῷ συνεχωρήθη, τὸ δὲ Πνεῦμα αὐτῷ οὐκ ἐδόθη. Αὐτὸς μὲν γὰρ ᾔτησεν· οὐδαμοῦ δὲ εὑρίσκομεν ἀπόκρισιν λέγουσαν, ὅτι ∆έδωκά σοι. Πρόσχες, παρακαλῶ· Ἔγραψε πεντηκοστὸν, ἑξηκοστὸν, ἑβδομηκοστὸν, ὀγδοηκοστὸν, ἐνενηκοστὸν, καὶ ἑκατοστόν. Γράφει καὶ ἄλλον ψαλμὸν μετὰ τὸν ἑκατοστὸν, μετὰ καὶ ἄλλους πολλοὺς ψαλμοὺς λέγων, Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος τῷ Κυρῴ μου· Κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου, ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν σου. Τοῦτον οὖν τὸν ψαλμὸν μετὰ τὴν ἁμαρτίαν ῥηθέντα εὑρίσκομεν ἐν Πνεύματι ἁγίῳ λεχθέντα. Πόθεν δῆλον; Ὁ Χριστὸς ἐδή-λωσεν. Ἐπειδὴ γὰρ πάντα εἰργάσατο, θάλατταν ἐχαλίνωσε, λεπροὺς ἐκάθηρε, δαίμονας ἐφυγάδευσε, κακίαν ἀπήλασε, παραλυτικὸν ἔσφιγξε, φωνὴ ἄνωθεν κατέβαινεν· Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητὸς, ἐν ᾧ εὐδόκησα, αὐτοῦ ἀκούετε· ὁ Κύριος αὐτῷ ἐμαρτύρησε, τὰ πράγματα ἐβόα, τὸ Πνεῦμα ἐν εἴδει περιστερᾶς ἦλθεν ἐπ' αὐτὸν, Ἰωάννης ἐμαρτύρησεν αὐτῷ· Ἰδὲ ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ ὁ αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου· λοιπὸν ὡς ἔμελλεν ἐπὶ τὸν σταυρὸν ἀναβαίνειν, καλέσας αὐτοὺς, λέγει αὐτοῖς· Τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ περὶ τοῦ Χριστοῦ; Οὐκ ἠρώτησα ὑμᾶς ἐν ἀρχῇ· οὐκ ἐμαρτύρησα ἐν ἀρχῇ ὑμᾶς, ὅτι οὐδέπω ἀπόδειξιν ὑμῖν θεότητος παρέσχον. Ὅτε δὲ καὶ στοιχεῖα πάντα ἔδειξάν μου τὴν θεότητα, ὅτε ὁ Πατὴρ, ὅτε ἡ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁμόνοια, ὅτε ἡ ἐμὴ διδασκαλία πάντας ἐκεῖ ἐχειραγώγησεν, ὅτε οὐδὲ σκιὰν ἔχετε ἀντιλογίας, Τί νῦν ὑμῖν δοκεῖ περὶ τοῦ Χριστοῦ; τίνος ἐστὶν υἱός; Λέγουσιν ἐκεῖνοι οἱ ἀγνώμονες καὶ ἀναίσχυντοι, Τοῦ ∆αυῒδ, ἀρνούμενοι τὴν θεότητα, καὶ οὐ θέλοντες εἰπεῖν, ὅτι τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστι. Τί οὖν αὐτός; Πῶς οὖν ∆αυῒδ ἐν Πνεύματι ἁγίῳ Κύριόν με καλεῖ, λέγων· Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος τῷ Κυρίῳ μου; Κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου, ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν σου; Εἰ δὲ Πνεῦμα εἶχεν ὁ ∆αυῒδ, ἐλύθη ἡ ἁμαρτία· εἰ δὲ ἐλύθη ἡ ἁμαρτία, καὶ τὴν αἴτησιν ἔλαβε. Λέγει γὰρ ὁ ∆αυΐδ· Καρδίαν καθαρὰν κτίσον ἐν ἐμοὶ, ὁ Θεὸς, καὶ πνεῦμα εὐθὲς ἐγκαίνισον ἐν τοῖς ἐγκάτοις μου. Ὁρᾷς ὅτι πάλιν ἐπὶ τὸ ἀξίωμα τὸ ἑαυτοῦ ἐπανῆλθε; Πάλιν προφήτης ἐγένετο, πάλιν περὶ Χριστοῦ διαλέγεται, πάλιν ἀπέλαβεν ἑαυτοῦ τὴν παῤῥησίαν, καὶ οὐδὲν ἐλυμήνατο αὐτὸν ἡ ἁμαρτία. Εἶδες πόση τῆς μετανοίας ἡ δύναμις; Τί λέγω; Καὶ ζῶν καὶ τελευτῶν ἴσχυσεν. Ἦλθόν ποτε βάρβαροι, καὶ τὴν πόλιν ἐπολιόρκουν. Ὁ Ἐζεκίας δίκαιος ὢν παρεκάλει τὸν Θεὸν καὶ ἠξίου, λέγων· Ἐλέησόν με, Κύριε, καὶ φεῖσαι τῆς πόλεως ταύτης. Ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ προφήτης Ἡσαΐας, καὶ λέγει, ἵνα μὴ νομίσῃ ἐκεῖνος, ὅτι ἡ δικαιοσύνη αὐτοῦ ἠκούσθη· καίτοι τελευτήσας ἦν ὁ ∆αυῒδ καὶ ἔχων χίλια ἔτη ἐν τῷ ᾅδῃ· τί οὖν λέγει; Ὑπερασπιῶ σου καὶ τῆς πόλεως ταύτης δι' ἐμὲ καὶ διὰ ∆αυῒδ τὸν παῖδά μου. Ὁ ∆αυῒδ ἀπέθανε, καὶ ἡ παῤῥησία αὐτοῦ ζῇ, καὶ ὁ τελευτήσας τοῦ ζῶντος προΐστατο. Ὢ δικαίου καὶ μετὰ τὴν τελευτὴν τειχομαχοῦντος! Ἐνταῦθα δὲ καταπαύσω μου τὸν λόγον, ἱκανῶς, ὡς οἶμαι, τὴν λύσιν ἀποδοὺς τῶν ζητουμένων, ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τῷ Κυρίῳ ἡμῶν, ᾧ ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν.
