the Holy Spirit according to the voice of the apostles. 75.1185 The most divine Luke narrates that this happened also in Jerusalem. “For the whole multitude,” he says, “kept silence, and listened to Barnabas and Paul relating what signs God had done through them, and wonders among the Gentiles.” Therefore, then, the Holy Spirit is God; for it is he who works the signs and wonders. Wherefore also the Lord said in the Gospels: “But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.” And again in Acts, Luke says that Paul, having chosen Silas, departed, commended by the brothers to the grace of God; again calling the Holy Spirit God, who through the brothers in Antioch set him apart for the work to which he had called him. Again the blessed Paul says in the letter to the Corinthians: “whom God has appointed in the Church, some as prophets and apostles, others as pastors and teachers and evangelists, for the equipping of the saints;” but in Miletus, addressing the brothers, and reminding them of the grace that was given: “Pay careful attention to yourselves,” he says, “and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of the Lord, which he obtained with his own blood.” See again here the theology of the Spirit. For there having mentioned God as ordaining pastors, and teachers, and evangelists, here he says concerning the Spirit: In which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to shepherd the Church; teaching that the Holy Spirit is God, and that it is the same to say God and Spirit, because of the communion of nature; for in the things done by God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit cooperate; and in the things accomplished by the Son and the Spirit, God the Father likewise approves. And from another passage again the blessed Paul proclaims that the Spirit is God; “For if,” he says, “all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.” For since prophecy is a gift of the Spirit, and through the revelation of the Spirit the secrets of the heart are made manifest, and since it is proper to God to know the mind of men, necessarily he who is convicted through prophecy, being called to account, will worship God, declaring that God is really among you; and they had the grace of the Spirit. But if God was in them, because they enjoyed the grace of the Spirit, then the Holy Spirit is God and from God. 75.1188
27. That the Holy Spirit is uncreated from God, wherefore also he is called eternal. And
and the most divine Peter in the Catholic Epistles: “If you are insulted,” he says, “for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of power and of God rests upon you.” And the blessed John in his Epistle: “By this,” he says, “we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.” But that which is proclaimed to be of God is not a creature, but exists from the divine substance; wherefore also the blessed Paul calls it eternal, having not received a beginning of its being; “For if,” he says, “the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of a heifer's ashes, sanctifies those who have been defiled for perfection, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the Holy Spirit offered himself?” If, therefore, the Holy Spirit is eternal, and God is eternal, the conclusion is clear; but let us leave it to the industrious to collect all the testimonies concerning the Holy Spirit, those that proclaim him both God and Lord, and speak of him as ranked with the Father and the Son; but let us hasten to the end of the teaching set before us.
