you see the Son of man ascending where he was before? The flesh profits nothing; it is the spirit that gives life. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit, and are life. 1 COR. Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily, will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For what reason one must eat the body and drink the blood of the Lord, in remembrance of the Lord's obedience unto death, so that those who live may no longer live for themselves, but for him who died for them and was raised. Chap. 3. LUKE. And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to them, saying; This is my body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup, after supper, saying; This cup is the New Covenant in my blood, which is shed for you. 1 COR. That the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said; Take, eat; this is my body, which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup, after supper, saying; This cup is the New Covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread, and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 2 COR. For the love of Christ constrains us, judging this, that if one died for all, then all died; and for all he di 31.741 ed, that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for him who died for them, and rose again, so that the many might become one body in Christ ... 1 COR. The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? Because we, being many, are one bread, one body. For we all partake of the one bread. That he who partakes of the holy things must praise the Lord Chap. 4. MATTHEW. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and having given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to the disciples, and the rest. To which is added: And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

RULE 22. That the practice of sin alienates from the Lord, and

makes one familiar with the devil. Chap. 1. JOHN. Truly, truly, I say to you, that everyone who commits sin,

is a slave of sin. You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. TO THE ROMANS. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. That intimacy with the Lord is not known by kinship according to the flesh, but is achieved in the earnest doing of the will of God. Chap. 2. JOHN. He who is of God hears the words of God. LUKE. And it was told to him, by some who said: Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you. But he answered and said to them: My mother and my brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it. JOHN. You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you. TO THE ROMANS. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.

RULE 23. That he who is unwillingly drawn by sin ought to recognize himself

as being controlled by another pre-existing sin, which he willingly serves, and so is led by it even to what he does not want.

θεωρῆτε τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀναβαίνοντα ὅπου ἦν τὸ πρότερον; Ἡ σὰρξ οὐκ ὠφελεῖ οὐ δέν· τὸ πνεῦμά ἐστι τὸ ζωοποιοῦν. Τὰ ῥήματα ἃ ἐγὼ λελάληκα ὑμῖν, πνεῦμά ἐστι, καὶ ζωή ἐστι. ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡ. αʹ. Ὥστε ὃς ἂν ἐσθίῃ τὸν ἄρτον τοῦτον, ἢ πίνῃ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦτο τοῦ Κυρίου ἀναξίως, ἔνοχος ἔσται τοῦ σώματος καὶ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ Κυρίου. ∆οκιμαζέτω δὲ ἄνθρωπος ἑαυτὸν, καὶ οὕτως ἐκ τοῦ ἄρτου ἐσθιέτω, καὶ ἐκ τοῦ ποτηρίου πινέτω. Ὁ γὰρ ἐσθίων καὶ πί νων ἀναξίως, κρῖμα ἑαυτῷ ἐσθίει καὶ πίνει, μὴ διακρίνων τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Κυρίου. Ποίῳ λόγῳ δεῖ ἐσθίειν τὸ σῶμα, καὶ πίνειν τὸ αἷμα τοῦ Κυρίου, εἰς ἀνάμνησιν τῆς τοῦ Κυρίου μέχρι θανάτου ὑπακοῆς, ἵνα οἱ ζῶντες μηκέτι ἑαυτοῖς ζῶσιν, ἀλλὰ τῷ ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν ἀποθανόντι καὶ ἐγερθέντι. Κεφάλ. Γʹ. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Καὶ λαβὼν ἄρτον, εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασε, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς λέγων· Τοῦτό ἐστι τὸ σῶμά μου, τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν διδόμενον· τοῦτο ποιεῖτε εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν. Ὡσαύτως καὶ τὸ ποτήριον, μετὰ τὸ δειπνῆσαι, λέγων· Τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον ἡ Καινὴ ∆ιαθήκη ἐστὶν ἐν τῷ αἵ ματί μου, τῷ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν ἐκχυνομένῳ. ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡ. αʹ. Ὅτι ὁ Κύριος Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ, ᾗπαρεδίδοτο, ἔλαβεν ἄρτον, καὶ εὐχαριστήσας, ἔκλασε, καὶ εἶπε· Λάβετε, φάγετε· τοῦτό μού ἐστι τὸ σῶμα, τὸ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν κλώμενον· τοῦτο ποιεῖτε εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν. Ὡσαύτως καὶ τὸ ποτήριον, μετὰ τὸ δειπνῆσαι, λέγων· Τοῦτο τὸ ποτήριον ἡ Καινὴ ∆ιαθήκη ἐστὶν ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ αἵματι. Τοῦτο ποιεῖτε, ὁσάκις ἂν πίνητε, εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἀνάμνησιν. Ὁσάκις γὰρ ἂν ἐσθίητε τὸν ἄρτον τοῦτον, καὶ τὸ ποτήριον τοῦτο πί νητε, τὸν θάνατον τοῦ Κυρίου καταγγέλλετε ἄχρις οὗ ἂν ἔλθῃ. ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡ. βʹ. Ἡ γὰρ ἀγάπη τοῦ Χριστοῦ συνέχει ἡμᾶς, κρίναντας τοῦτο, ὅτι, εἰ εἷς ὑπὲρ πάντων ἀπέθανεν, ἄρα οἱ πάντες ἀπέθανον· καὶ ὑπὲρ πάντων ἀπ 31.741 έθανεν, ἵνα οἱ ζῶντες μηκέτι ἑαυτοῖς ζῶσιν, ἀλλὰ τῷ ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν ἀποθανόντι, καὶ ἐγερθέντι, εἰς τὸ γενέσθαι τοὺς πολλοὺς ἓν σῶμα ἐν Χριστῷ ... ΠΡΟΣ ΚΟΡ. αʹ. Ὁ ἄρτος ὃν κλῶμεν οὐχὶ κοινωνία τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐστιν; Ὅτι εἷς ἄρτος, ἓν σῶμα οἱ πολλοί ἐσμεν. Οἱ γὰρ πάντες ἐκ τοῦ ἑνὸς ἄρτου μετέχομεν. Ὅτι δεῖ τὸν μεταλαμβάνοντα τῶν ἁγίων ὑμνεῖν τὸν Κύριον Κεφάλ. ∆ʹ. ΜΑΤΘΑΙΟΣ. Ἐσθιόντων δὲ αὐτῶν, λαβὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὸν ἄρτον, καὶ εὐχαριστήσας ἔκλασε, καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς, καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς. Οἷς ἐπι φέρει· Καὶ ὑμνήσαντες ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῶν Ἐλαιῶν.

ΟΡΟΣ ΚΒ. Ὅτι ἡ ἐργασία τῆς ἁμαρτίας ἀπαλλοτριοῖ τοῦ Κυ ρίου, καὶ

προσοικειοῖ τῷ διαβόλῳ. Κεφάλ. Αʹ. ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ. Ἀμὴν, ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ποιῶν τὴν ἁμαρτίαν,

δοῦλός ἐστι τῆς ἁμαρ τίας. Ὑμεῖς ἐκ τοῦ πατρὸς τοῦ διαβόλου ἐστὲ, καὶ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν θέλετε ποιεῖν. ΠΡΟΣ ΡΩΜ. Ὅτε γὰρ δοῦλοι ἦτε τῆς ἁμαρτίας, ἐλεύθεροι ἦτε τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ. Ὅτι ἡ πρὸς τὸν Κύριον οἰκειότης οὐκ ἐν τῇ κατὰ σάρκα συγγενείᾳ γνωρίζεται, ἀλλ' ἐν τῇ σπουδῇ τῶν θελημάτων τοῦ Θεοῦ κατορθοῦται. Κεφάλ. Βʹ. ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ. Ὁ ὢν ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀκούει. ΛΟΥΚΑΣ. Καὶ ἀπηγγέλη αὐτῷ, λεγόντων· Ἡ μήτηρ σου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί σου ἑστήκασιν ἔξω, ἰδεῖν σε θέλοντες. Ὁ δὲ ἀπο κριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Μήτηρ μου καὶ ἀδελφοί μου οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀκούον τες καὶ ποιοῦντες. ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ. Ὑμεῖς φίλοι μου ἐστὲ, ἐὰν ποιῆτε ὅσα ἐγὼ ἐντέλλομαι ὑμῖν. ΠΡΟΣ ΡΩΜ. Ὅσοι γὰρ Πνεύματι Θεοῦ ἄγονται, οὗτοι υἱοὶ Θεοῦ εἰσιν.

ΟΡΟΣ ΚΓʹ. Ὅτι ὁ ἄκων ἑλκόμενος ὑπὸ ἁμαρτίας ὀφείλει γνωρίζειν ἑαυτὸν

ὑφ' ἑτέρας προενυπαρχούσης κρα τούμενον ἁμαρτίας, ᾗ ἑκὼν δουλεύων, ἄγεται λοιπὸν ὑπ' αὐτῇ καὶ ἐφ' ἃ μὴ θέλει.
