your God, I will provide for you what he commanded you as you say. And he set Jannes and Jambres against Moses and Aaron. And Pharaoh and his great men sat; and those with Jannes and Jambres by sorcery made their rod a serpent, and it came against Moses. And Moses, having prayed, also himself cast the rod he was holding to the ground; and his rod also became a very great serpent, and it swallowed the serpent which Jannes and Jambres had made; and Moses was victorious, and the king and all were amazed. And likewise Jannes and Jambres made a river of very clear waters become blood in the presence of the king and of all. And Moses prayed, and again the currents of the river became pure waters, as they were before. And they also did certain other things opposite one another; and Moses defeated them. 65 And Moses says to Pharaoh, Behold, you have seen the power of the God of Israel. Let us go, so that we may worship him. But Pharaoh, while agreeing with him, kept putting it off; and Moses prayed to God to send plagues upon him and upon the Egyptians, so that their king might be compelled to let Israel go. And the God of Israel sent a sevenfold wrath, so that the king summoned Moses and said to him, Pray to your God so that this land may be delivered from so many evils, and as the Lord your God lives, I will not hinder you from taking your people Israel to worship him. These things are related in the Hebrew scriptures. And Moses, having heard these things from the king, went out to pray to the God of Israel, and he said to the Jews, The king has released all of you to go out to worship God. But the king, Pharaoh Petissonios, immediately went in Memphis to the famous oracle; and having made a sacrifice, he asked the Pythia, saying, Make clear to me, who is the first of you and great God of Israel? And this oracle was given to him. There is, treading upon the great heaven, a surpassing ether of flame, an ever-flowing, immortal fire, before which all trembles—heaven, earth, and sea, and the deep Tartarean demons have shuddered. This God is self-fathered, 66 fatherless, the father a son himself of himself, thrice-blessed; and we are a small part of the angels. Having learned this, depart in silence. But King Pharaoh, having heard these things from the oracle, commanded that the words given to him by the oracle be carved on a stone slab; which words, having been carved, are inscribed on the slab to this day, up in the temple of Memphis, from where the river Nile proceeds. And King Pharaoh, having come down from the oracle, immediately let Israel and Moses and Aaron go. And the whole people of the Jews went out from Egypt, and they took as if on loan from the Egyptian women and men ornaments and countless silver. And after they had gone out, Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, repented, having been taught that they had also borrowed ornaments and silver and goods and fled. And he pursued them with his chariots and all his armed force; and he overtook them beside the sea. And the Israelites, turning and seeing King Pharaoh and his army coming behind them and the sea before them, cried out with a great shout to God; and Moses, who was leading the people, struck the waters of the sea with his rod, and it became dry, and they walked. And Moses, remaining behind all the people and turning behind him, struck the dry land again with his rod, and it became a surging sea. And Petissonios Pharaoh, the king of the Egyptians, was drowned 67 in the sea with his chariots and all his forces, and the waves of the deep covered him and those with him. But the Lord saved the people of the Jews with Moses and Aaron, walking on the waves of the sea as on dry land, fleeing from Egypt with
