Chap. 1. TO THE ROMANS. For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am

carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do, I know not. For what I would, that I do not; but what I hate, that I do. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law, that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwells in 31.744 me. For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing; for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would, I do not, but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwells in me.

RULE 24. That one must not lie, but speak the truth in everything.

Chap. 1. MATTHEW. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more

than these comes of evil. TO THE EPHESIANS. Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour ... TO THE COLOSSIANS. Lie not one to another.

RULE 25. That one must not make unprofitable or contentious inquiries.

Chap. 1. TO TIMOTHY 2. Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the

Lord; that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers ... But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. That one must not utter an idle word, from which there is no benefit. For not to speak for the edification of faith, or even to do that which is good, is to grieve the Holy Spirit of God. Chap. 2 MATTHEW. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. TO THE EPHESIANS. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth; but that which is good for the edification of faith, that it may minister grace unto the hearers, and grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

RULE 26. That every word or deed must be confirmed by the testimony of the

divinely inspired Scripture, for the full assurance of the good, and the condemnation of the wicked. Chap. 1. MATTHEW. And when the tempter came to him he said; If you are the Son of

God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said; It is written; Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. ACTS. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance ... And they were all amazed, and 31.745 were in doubt, saying one to another; What does this mean? Others mocking said, that They are full of new wine. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them; You men of Judaea, and all you that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words. For these are not drunken, as you suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day; but this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and they shall prophesy, and so forth. That one must also use things known in nature and in the custom of life for the confirmation of what is done or said. Chap. 2. MATTHEW. But beware of false

Αʹ.

Βʹ.
