offspring and devised everything. And if the foolish have any care for prudence, Creature of God, will you not fetter the whole law of the flesh, if you wish? A mortal yields to reason, as bronze to fire. But if the nature of reason is not master of the flesh, as it made me divine. Image, what more is there for us who are moved by like passions? If indeed the nature of many is unrestrained, yet this we know, that command often rules even over our common nature. 623 For my body is also similar, but the Cross has bound me, taking me, to which I, bearing my heavy flesh, have bound it. For I long to die with Christ, so that I may be raised up with Him, bearing all things of Christ, the word, the body, the nail, the resurrection. But for others the bond of the flesh is spontaneous, not from a more divine love, which they do not at all call prudence. Yet you are a god-given prize, to live outside of hubris, and to have a mind serene and unshaken. One man hated sweet wine, another hated a food that others love; another, a smell. And others, having a spirit hostile to mortals, dwell in the remotest parts, and readily run far away from mortals. But you have an unbelieving mind toward the unmarried. 624 I for my part do not think it unbelievable. But you flee towards fear, and then you have forgotten the evils of marriage. Does not the little salamander run through raging fire, as if through earth, skipping on its lowly feet? And there is a fiery fish, and being fiery it is not overcome by the unbelievable fire; and burning, it shines through the midst of the brine. Does not the magnet stone draw up an iron mortar? Nor the untamed adamant? And does it not send forth a flash when struck by iron, while another flashes with a little water? It sent forth a flash with water, but was dimmed by oil. And how many wonders are there even more strange than these, who could number them? Since there are many to speak of. For the lofty word plays among all kinds of forms, 625 mixing, as it wishes, the whole world here and there. I will tell a few things from many, some of which I myself have seen, and for others books, and for others ears have given belief. Is there not one downward flow for all rivers? And one law for the seas to be bound by the shores? And one upward course for flaming fire in frequent leaps? And yet a river swims through the bitter brine, and though it is a river, its water does not mix with water. And sailors draw sweet drink from the sea, bringing their ship near a stream hastening toward the land. And I have seen the bold strait of Euboea, the unutterable Euripus, the key of the sea, 626 raging with backward-rushing streams. The sea flows, and the stream goes up. And is not the Ocean drawn back from the land, when it comes to the shore, rushing with hastening surges? And plain and sea on the Cimmerian shores. And another stream of fire's flame goes, if it is indeed true, an unbelievable torrent is vomited forth from the rocks of Aetna, a river of fire. The unmixable things were mixed, by the will of Christ. I know how to sing of similar wonders even in small things. There is a certain horn-bearing fruit, as they say, which alone, of all that the grain-giving earth brings forth, having a hard and unyielding body, is neither dissolved in the earth nor softened by rains, but remains hardened, dry, harder than horn for all its days. 627 The horn of which has surpassed the ox's horn, when the plowman's right hand pours his own into the fruitful field, whence it got both its name and nature from horns, unless the wise know some other reason; for I do not. These things are from nature. But hear also what art has forced. Starlings speak like men, zealous for another's voice, which the starling was taught by an image appearing in a polished mirror, while the cunning man utters a hidden voice. And crows likewise steal a voice. So also the lovely-colored, hook-beaked parrot inside its woven house, spoke with a human voice, and deceived a man's hearing. And for horses there are suspended ropes, over which they walk. And the hateful bear travels through the air, 628 and on the seats of justice, like some prudent judge, sitting, it wielded the straight scales of justice, as it seems, with its paws, and the beast deceived the mind. And a mortal taught what nature did not. And I have seen one sitting upon the back of a strong, long-maned lion, and he subdued the beast's might with his hand, and he drove, and the roaring beast was led, casting forth its deadly breath, and fawned upon its master.
