having been cast out from glory, and that one being raised to such honor, he also contrived to cast him out of that blessed way of life. Therefore, taking the serpent as a workshop for his own deceit, through it he spoke to the woman, and, persuading her to eat from that forbidden tree in the hope of deification, through her he deceived Adam also, so named the first-formed. And the first man, having eaten of the plant of disobedience, is exiled from the paradise of delight by the Creator, and, instead of that blessed life and imperishable way of living, he falls into this wretched and miserable (alas for me) existence, and finally is condemned to death. From this the devil, having taken strength and boasting in his victory, when the human race had multiplied, set before them every path of wickedness. So that, wishing from this to cut off the great course of sin, God brought a flood upon the earth, destroying every living soul; but having found only one righteous man in that generation, having saved him with his wife and children in a certain ark, 84 he established him all alone upon the earth. And when the human race began again to increase to a multitude, they forgot God and advanced to worse impiety, being enslaved to various sins, and being corrupted by terrible misdeeds, and being divided into multifaceted error. For some thought that the universe moves automatically, and they taught that it is without providence, as if no Lord presided over it; others introduced fate, entrusting everything to genesis; others worshipped many evil and passionate gods, so as to have them as advocates for their own passions and terrible deeds, and having fashioned images of them, they set up deaf and senseless carved images and idols, and enclosing them in temples they worshipped them, serving creation rather than the Creator, some to the sun and the moon, and to the stars which God set to give light to this terrestrial world, being both lifeless and senseless, being illuminated and maintained by the providence of the Creator, but indeed having no power of their own; others to the fire and the waters and the other elements of the earth, being lifeless and senseless; and the ensouled and rational were not ashamed to worship such things; others gave reverence to beasts and reptiles and four-footed cattle, proving themselves more beastly than the things they worshipped; and others fashioned images of certain shameful and vile men, and called these gods, and named some of them male, and some female, 86 whom they themselves set forth as being adulterers and murderers, wrathful and jealous and passionate, patricides and fratricides, thieves and robbers, lame and crippled, and sorcerers, and madmen, and some of these had died, and some had been struck by lightning, and were mourned for, and lamented, and had been enslaved to men, and had become fugitives, and were transformed into animals for wicked and shameful unions; Whence, men taking their pretexts from their gods, were fearlessly defiled with every impurity. And a terrible darkness possessed our race in those times, and there was no one who understood, there was no one who sought God. But a certain Abraham was found alone in that generation, having the senses of his soul strengthened, who by the contemplation of created things came to know the Creator. For, having observed heaven and earth and sea, sun and moon and the rest, he marveled at this harmonious ordering; and seeing the world and all things in it, he did not think that it had come into being and was preserved automatically, nor indeed did he attribute the cause of such an ordering to the elements of the earth or to lifeless idols; but through these he came to know the true God, and that He is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe

ἀπορριφθέντα δόξης, ἐκεῖνον δὲ πρὸς τοιαύτην τιμὴν ἀναγόμενον, καὶ ἐμηχανήσατο ἐκβαλεῖν αὐτὸν τῆς μακαρίας ἐκείνης διαγωγῆς. τὸν ὄφιν οὖν ἐργαστήριον τῆς ἰδίας πλάνης λαβόμενος, δι' αὐτοῦ ὡμίλησε τῇ γυναικί, καί, πείσας αὐτὴν φαγεῖν ἐκ τοῦ ἀπηγορευμένου ἐκείνου ξύλου ἐλπίδι θεώσεως, δι' αὐτῆς ἠπάτησε καὶ τὸν Ἀδάμ, οὕτω τοῦ πρωτοπλάστου κληθέντος. καὶ φαγὼν ὁ πρῶτος ἄνθρωπος τοῦ φυτοῦ τῆς παρακοῆς ἐξόριστος γίνεται τοῦ παραδείσου τῆς τρυφῆς ὑπὸ τοῦ ∆ημιουργοῦ, καί, ἀντὶ τῆς μακαρίας ζωῆς ἐκείνης καὶ ἀνωλέθρου διαγωγῆς, εἰς τὴν ἀθλίαν ταύτην καὶ ταλαίπωρον (φεῦ μοι) βιοτὴν ἐμπίπτει, καὶ θάνατον τὸ τελευταῖον καταδικάζεται. ἐντεῦθεν ἰσχὺν ὁ διάβολος λαβὼν καὶ τῇ νίκῃ ἐγκαυχώμενος, πληθυνθέντος τοῦ γένους τῶν ἀνθρώπων, πᾶσαν κακίας ὁδὸν αὐτοῖς ὑπέθετο. ὡς, ἐντεῦθεν διακόψαι τὴν πολλὴν τῆς ἁμαρτίας φορὰν βουλόμενος, ὁ Θεὸς κατακλυσμὸν ἐπήγαγε τῇ γῇ, ἀπολέσας πᾶσαν ψυχὴν ζῶσαν· ἕνα δὲ μόνον εὑρὼν δίκαιον ἐν τῇ γενεᾷ ἐκείνῃ, τοῦτον σὺν γυναικὶ καὶ τέκνοις ἐν κιβωτῷ τινι 84 περισώσας, μονώτατον εἰς τὴν γῆν κατέστησεν. ἡνίκα δὲ ἤρξατο πάλιν εἰς πλῆθος τὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων γένος χωρεῖν, ἐπελάθοντο τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ εἰς χεῖρον ἀσεβείας προέκοψαν, διαφόροις δουλωθέντες ἁμαρτήμασι, καὶ δεινοῖς καταφθαρέντες ἀτοπήμασι, καὶ εἰς πολυσχιδῆ πλάνην διαμερισθέντες. Οἱ μὲν γὰρ αὐτομάτως φέρεσθαι τὸ πᾶν ἐνόμισαν, καὶ ἀπρονόητα ἐδογμάτισαν, ὡς μηδενὸς ἐφεστηκότος ∆εσπότου· ἄλλοι εἱμαρμένην εἰσηγήσαντο, τῇ γενέσει τὸ πᾶν ἐπιτρέψαντες· ἄλλοι πολλοὺς θεοὺς κακοὺς καὶ πολυπαθεῖς ἐσεβάσθησαν, τοῦ ἔχειν αὐτοὺς τῶν ἰδίων παθῶν καὶ δεινῶν πράξεων συνηγόρους, ὧν καὶ μορφώματα τυπώσαντες ἀνεστήλωσαν ξόανα κωφὰ καὶ ἀναίσθητα εἴδωλα, καὶ συγκλείσαντες ἐν ναοῖς προσεκύνησαν, λατρεύοντες τῇ κτίσει παρὰ τὸν Κτίσαντα, οἱ μὲν τῷ ἡλίῳ καὶ τῇ σελήνῃ, καὶ τοῖς ἄστροις ἃ ἔθετο ὁ Θεὸς πρὸς τὸ φαῦσιν παρέχειν τῷ περιγείῳ τούτῳ κόσμῳ, ἄψυχά τε ὄντα καὶ ἀναίσθητα, τῇ προνοίᾳ τοῦ ∆ημιουργοῦ φωτιζόμενα καὶ διακρατούμενα, οὐ μὴν δὲ οἴκοθέν τι δυνάμενα· οἱ δὲ τῷ πυρὶ καὶ τοῖς ὕδασι καὶ τοῖς λοιποῖς στοιχείοις τῆς γῆς, ἀψύχοις καὶ ἀναισθήτοις οὖσι· καὶ οὐκ ᾐσχύνθησαν οἱ ἔμψυχοι καὶ λογικοὶ τὰ τοιαῦτα σέβεσθαι· ἄλλοι θηρίοις καὶ ἑρπετοῖς καὶ κτήνεσι τετραπόδοις τὸ σέβας ἀπένειμαν, κτηνωδεστέρους τῶν σεβομένων ἑαυτοὺς ἀποδεικνύντες· οἱ δὲ ἀνθρώπων τινῶν αἰσχρῶν καὶ εὐτελῶν μορφώματα ἀνετυπώσαντο, καὶ τούτους θεοὺς ἐκάλεσαν, καὶ τοὺς μὲν αὐτῶν ἄρρενας, τινὰς δὲ θηλείας ὠνόμασαν, 86 οὓς ἐκεῖνοι αὐτοὶ ἐξέθεντο μοιχοὺς εἶναι καὶ φονεῖς, ὀργίλους καὶ ζηλωτὰς καὶ θυμαντικούς, πατροκτόνους καὶ ἀδελφοκτόνους, κλέπτας καὶ ἅρπαγας, χωλοὺς καὶ κυλλούς, καὶ φαρμακούς, καὶ μαινομένους, καὶ τούτων τινὰς μὲν τετελευτηκότας, τινὰς δὲ κεκεραυνωμένους, καὶ κοπτομένους, καὶ θρηνουμένους καὶ δεδουλευκότας ἀνθρώποις, καὶ φυγάδας γενομένους, καὶ εἰς ζῷα μεταμορφουμένους ἐπὶ πονηραῖς καὶ αἰσχραῖς μίξεσιν· ὅθεν, λαμβάνοντες οἱ ἄνθρωποι ἀφορμὰς ἀπὸ τῶν θεῶν αὐτῶν, ἀδεῶς κατεμιαίνοντο πάσῃ ἀκαθαρσίᾳ. καὶ δεινὴ κατεῖχε σκότωσις τὸ γένος ἡμῶν ἐν ἐκείνοις τοῖς χρόνοις, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ συνιών, οὐκ ἦν ὁ ἐκζητῶν τὸν Θεόν. Ἀβραὰμ δέ τις ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ γενεᾷ μόνος εὑρέθη τὰς αἰσθήσεις τῆς ψυχῆς ἐρρωμένας ἔχων, ὃς τῇ θεωρίᾳ τῶν κτισμάτων ἐπέγνω τὸν ∆ημιουργόν. Κατανοήσας γὰρ οὐρανὸν καὶ γῆν καὶ θάλασσαν, ἥλιον καὶ σελήνην καὶ τὰ λοιπά, ἐθαύμασε τὴν ἐναρμόνιον ταύτην διακόσμησιν· ἰδὼν δὲ τὸν κόσμον καὶ τὰ ἐν αὐτῷ πάντα, οὐκ αὐτομάτως γεγενῆσθαι καὶ συντηρεῖσθαι ἐνόμισεν, οὔτε μὴν τοῖς στοιχείοις τῆς γῆς ἢ τοῖς ἀψύχοις εἰδώλοις τὴν αἰτίαν τῆς τοιαύτης διακοσμήσεως προσανέθετο· ἀλλὰ τὸν ἀληθῆ Θεὸν διὰ τούτων ἐπέγνω, καὶ αὐτὸν εἶναι ∆ημιουργὸν τοῦ παντὸς καὶ συνοχέα
