we fall foul of God-pleasing virtue. If we had acquired humility, we would not be arrogant towards the servants of God. If we were deemed worthy to acquire true love, we would know God and would have willed not only to be disciplined, but also to be dishonored and beaten and wronged and treated insolently and to endure eagerly every trial, every affliction, for Christ's sake.

But now we are so possessed by the passions and exist in such darkness and ignorance, that we are not even aware of our state, nor do we know that we are doing evil. For this very reason, if we are reminded by someone about some sin, we answer as if we had never heard the Christian Scriptures: "And is this act indeed a sin? And for what reason or why is it reckoned a sin? This is idly called a sin by some. Would that we guarded ourselves against the greater deeds; for concerning these small ones, God will surely not show much strictness." And who says these things? The monks, who have made a second profession and covenant with God, who wear the habit as virtue and the name instead of holiness, who have covenanted with Christ to cast away the world and the things in the world (53), who have professed to renounce parents and friends, who have covenanted to be obedient to their spiritual father as to God, who have promised strictness and ascetic practice even to a glance and an idle word, they do not judge it a sin to be envious or to revile or to murmur or to contradict or to lie and to live by one's own will and to swear or to secretly steal something from the monastery or to give to another without the counsel of the superior. In addition to these things, neither do they consider it a sin at all to badly manage the affairs entrusted to them, such as to do something in them with partiality or with passion or deceitfully or enviously or without conscience and for material gain.

Do you not tremble, O man, hearing God say to you every day through all of the divine Scripture: "Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth. For amen I say to you, both for an idle word you will give an account and for a cup of cold water you will receive a reward"? Do you not hear that God is a judge of the thoughts and intentions of the heart? For what does He say? "He who looks at a woman to lust for her, has already committed adultery with her in his heart." Do you see how he who looks upon someone's face with desire is judged an adulterer? So know for certain, O man, that he who is overcome by the desire for money is judged avaricious, even if he possesses nothing else at all, and he who craves costly and many foods is a glutton, even if due to poverty he is fed on bread and water alone, and he who for a long time (54) couples with his thoughts and is defiled is a fornicator, even if he never sees a person's face. So also he who says in his heart: "This was done badly and that happened unreasonably" and: "Why did such and such happen? And to what end did that not happen?" let him not be deceived, he will be a slanderer and will be judged as one who condemns, even if he does not utter a word from his mouth, nor does anyone hear his voice.

Be not deceived, my brothers, God is a lover of mankind and merciful and compassionate, and I, bearing witness, confess it and trust to be saved by His compassion. However, know that it will in no way benefit those who do not repent and who do not keep His commandments with all strictness and much fear, but He will punish them even worse than the unbelieving and unbaptized gentiles. Be not deceived, O brothers, nor let any of the sins seem small to you and be despised by us as not causing such great harm to our souls. For the prudent servants do not know the difference between a small and a great sin, but even if they stumble in a glance or a thought or a word, they are disposed as though having fallen away from the love of God, which I am persuaded is also true. For he who has thought some small thing outside the divine will and has not immediately driven out the assault of the thought,

ἀρετήν θεάρεστον ἀντεπίπτομεν. Ἐάν ταπείνωσιν ἐκτησάμεθα, οὐκ ἄν τῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ δούλων κατεπαιρόμεθα. Ἐάν ἀγάπην ἀληθινήν κτήσασθαι ἠξιώθημεν, καί τόν Θεόν ἄν ἐγνωρίζομεν και οὐ μόνον παιδεύεσθαι, ἀλλά καί ἀτιμάζεσθαι καί τύπτεσθαι καί ἀδικεῖσθαι καί ἐπηρεάζεσθαι καί πάντα πειρασμόν, πᾶσαν θλῖψιν προθύμως ὑπομένειν διά τόν Χριστόν ἠθελήσαμεν.

Νυνί δέ τοσοῦτον τοῖς πάθεσι κατεσχημένοι τελοῦμεν καί ἐν τοσαύτῃ σκοτώσει καί ἀγνοίᾳ τυγχάνομεν, ὅτι οὐδέ ἐν οἷς ἐσμεν αἰσθανόμεθα, οὐδέ ὅτι κακῶς πράττομεν ἐπιστάμεθα. ∆ιά τοι τοῦτο καί ἐάν παρά τινος ὑπομνησθῶμεν περί τινος ἁμαρτίας, ὡς μή ἀκηκοότες ποτέ τάς τῶν χριστιανῶν Γραφάς οὕτως ἀποκρινόμεθα· "Καί ἆρά γε ἁμαρτία ἡ πρᾶξις αὕτη ἐστί; Καί τίνος χάριν ἤ καί διά τί ἁμαρτία λογίζεται; Ματαίως τοῦτο παρά τινων ἁμαρτία ὀνομάζεται. Εἴθε τάς μείζονας ἐφυλαξάμεθα πράξεις· περί γάρ τούτων τῶν μικρῶν τήν πολλήν ὁ Θεός ἀκρίβειαν οὐ μή ἐνδείξηται". Καί ταῦτα τίνες; Οἱ μοναχοί, οἱ δευτέραν ὁμολογίαν καί συνθήκην μετά τοῦ Θεοῦ ποιησάμενοι, οἱ τήν στολήν ὡς ἀρετήν καί τό ὄνομα ἀντί ἁγιότητος περιφέροντες, οἱ κόσμον καί τά ἐν κόσμῳ (53) ἀποβαλέσθαι Χριστῷ συνταξάμενοι, οἱ γονεῦσι καί φίλοις ὁμολογήσαντες ἀποτάξασθαι, οἱ ὡς Θεῷ τῷ πνευματικῷ αὐτῶν πατρί συνταξάμενοι ὑποτάσσεσθαι, οἱ μέχρι καί βλέμματος καί ἀργοῦ ρήματος τήν ἀκρίβειαν καί ἄσκησιν ἐπαγγειλάμενοι, τό φθονεῖν ἤ λοιδορεῖν ἤ γογγύζειν ἤ ἀντιλέγειν ἤ ψεύδεσθαι καί ἰδιορρυθμεῖν καί ὀμνύειν ἤ τι τῆς μονῆς κρυφίως νοσφίζεσθαι ἤ καί διδόναι ἑτέρῳ ἄνευ βουλῆς τοῦ προεστῶτος ἁμαρτίαν οὐ κρίνουσι. Πρός τούτοις, οὐδέ τό κακῶς διοικεῖν τά ἐμπιστευθέντα αὐτοῖς πράγματα, οἷον ἤ προσπαθῶς τι ποιεῖν ἐν αὐτοῖς ἤ ἐμπαθῶς ἤ δολερῶς ἤ φθονερῶς ἤ ἀσυνειδήτως καί κατά πραγματείαν, ἡγοῦνται εἶναι τό σύνολον ἁμαρτίαν.

Οὐ φρίττεις, ἄνθρωπε, τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀκούων καθ᾿ ἑκάστην σοι λέγοντος διά πάσης τῆς θείας Γραφῆς· "Λόγος σαπρός μή ἐκπορευέσθω ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ὑμῶν. Ἀμήν γάρ λέγω ὑμῖν, καί ὑπέρ ἀργοῦ λόγου λόγον δώσετε καί ὑπέρ ψυχροῦ ὕδατος μισθόν λήψεσθε"; Οὐκ ἀκούεις ὅτι καί ἐννοιῶν καί λογισμῶν καρδίας κριτής ἐστιν ὁ Θεός; Τί γάρ φησιν; "Ὁ ἐμβλέψας γυναικί πρός τό ἐπιθυμῆσαι, ἤδη ἐμοίχευσεν αὐτήν ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ". Εἶδες πῶς μοιχός κρίνεται ὁ πρός ἐπιθυμίαν ἐμβλέπων εἰς πρόσωπόν τινος; Οὕτως ἴσθι βεβαίως, ὦ ἄνθρωπε, ὅτι καί ὁ ἐπιθυμίᾳ χρημάτων κρατούμενος φιλάργυρος κρίνεται, εἰ καί μηδέν ἕτερον τό σύνολον κέκτηται, καί ὁ βρωμάτων πολυτελῶν καί πολλῶν ὀρεγόμενος γαστρίμαργός ἐστιν, εἰ καί δι᾿ ἔνδειαν ἄρτῳ μόνῳ καί ὕδατι τρέφεται, καί πόρνος ὁ τοῖς λογισμοῖς ἐπί πολύ (54) συνδυάζων καί μολυνόμενος, εἰ καί πρόσωπον ἀνθρώπου ποτέ μή θεάσηται. Οὕτω καί ὁ λέγων ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ· "Κακῶς ἐπράχθη τοῦτο καί παραλόγως ἐκεῖνο γέγονε"καί· "∆ιά τί τό καί τό γέγονεν; ἵνα τί δέ καί ἐκεῖνο οὐ γέγονε;"μή πλανηθῇ, καταλαλητής ἔσται καί ὡς κατακρίνων κριθήσεται, κἄν μή ἐκβάλῃ ῥῆμα ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ, μηδέ ἀκούσῃ τις τήν φωνήν αὐτοῦ.

Μή πλανᾶσθε, ἀδελφοί μου, φιλάνθρωπός ἐστιν ὁ Θεός καί ἐλεήμων καί εὔσπλαχνος, κἀγώ μαρτυρῶν ὁμολογῶ καί τῇ αὐτοῦ εὐσπλαχνίᾳ θαρρῶ σώζεσθαι. Πλήν γινώσκετε ὅτι τούς μή μετανοοῦντας καί μετά πάσης ἀκριβείας καί φόβου πολλοῦ τηροῦντας τάς αὐτοῦ ἐντολάς, οὐδέν ὠφελήσει, ἀλλά καί χεῖρον μᾶλλον τῶν ἀπίστων ἐθνῶν καί ἀβαπτίστων αὐτούς τιμωρήσεται. Μή πλανᾶσθε, ὦ ἀδελφοί, μηδέ μικρά ὑμῖν τινα τῶν ἁμαρτημάτων φαινέσθωσαν καί ὡς μή τοσαύτην βλάβην ἐμποιοῦντα ταῖς ἡμετέραις ψυχαῖς καταφρονείσθωσαν παρ᾿ ἡμῶν. Μικροῦ γάρ καί μεγάλου ἁμαρτήματος διαφοράν οὐκ ἐπίστανται οἱ εὐγνώμονες δοῦλοι, ἀλλά κἄν μέχρι βλέμματος ἤ ἐννοίας ἤ λόγου πταίσωσιν, ὡς ἐκπεπτωκότες τῆς τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀγάπης διάκεινται, ὅπερ καί ἀληθές εἶναι πείθομαι. Ὁ γάρ ἔξω τοῦ θείου θελήματος μικρόν τι ἐνθυμηθείς καί μή εὐθύς, τήν τοῦ λογισμοῦ προσβολήν ἐκδιώξας,
