Chapter 1. MATTHEW. And Jesus entered into the temple of God, and cast out all those who sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the seats of them that sold doves; and he says to them: It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but you have made it a den of thieves. 1 CORINTHIANS. What? have you not houses to eat and to drink in? or do you despise the church of God, and shame them that have not? And if any man hunger, let him eat at home, that you come not together unto judgment. Because that which is named for God must be honored as holy until such time as the will of God is kept in it. 31.749 Chapter 2. MATTHEW. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets, and stone them which are sent unto you, how often would I have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and you would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

RULE 31. That one must not spend on others what has been set apart for those dedicated to God, unless it be from the surplus.

Chapter 1. MARK. The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation, and

she besought him that he would cast forth the demon out of her daughter. But he said: Let the children first be filled: for it is not right to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. And he said unto her, For this your saying.

RULE 32. That one must render graciously to each what is due.

Chapter 1. LUKE. And they asked him, saying, Master, we know,

that you say and teach rightly, neither do you accept the person of any, but teach the way of God truly: Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no? But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why do you test me? Show me a denarius. Whose image and superscription does it have? They answered and said, Caesar's. And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's. TO THE ROMANS. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another.

RULE 33. That one must not cause scandal.

Chapter 1. MATTHEW. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which

believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea; and again: woe to that man 31.752 by whom the offence comes. TO THE ROMANS. But judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. Because everything that is opposed to the will of the Lord is a scandal. Chapter 2. MATTHEW. From that time forth Jesus began to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from you, Lord: this shall not be unto you. But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: you are an offence unto me,

Αʹ.
