she consorted with actors in all things of the theater and took part with them in the practices there, serving in some buffoonish vulgarities. For she was exceptionally witty and a mocker, and from her work 9.14 she had immediately become a spectacle. For the woman had no share of modesty, nor had anyone ever seen her embarrassed, but she proceeded to shameless services with no hesitation, and she was of such a sort that when being slapped and struck on the cheek she would both make jokes and burst into loud laughter, and having stripped, would show both her front and her back parts naked to those who met her, which custom dictates should be unseen and hidden. 9.15 And she would mock her lovers with foolish talk and, always affecting delicacy with newer contrivances of intercourse, she was always able to win over the souls of the licentious, since she did not deign to be solicited by any of those who met her, but on the contrary she herself, joking and making vulgar hip-movements, solicited all who chanced by, especially 9.16 those who were beardless. For so great a slave to every pleasure has nowhere ever been; since often going to a communal dinner with ten young men, or more than these, who were in the very prime of their bodily strength and had made lechery their business, she would lie with all her fellow-diners the whole night, and when they all grew tired of this business, she would go to their servants, being thirty in number, if it so happened, and would couple with each of them, but not even so did she get her fill of this detestable thing. 9.17 And once having gone to the house of one of the notable men 9.17 in the middle of the drinking-party, while all the fellow-drinkers were watching her, as they say, climbing onto the raised part of the couch around the foot-end and pulling up her garments with no decency, she did not there disdain to display her licentiousness. 9.18 And she, though working from three openings, would complain against nature, being vexed that it had not pierced her breasts more widely than they are now, so that 9.19 she might be able to contrive another kind of intercourse there. And though she often conceived, almost always by some contrivance she was able to miscarry at once. 9.20 And often in the theater too, in full view of the whole populace, she would strip and become naked in their midst, having only a loincloth around her private parts and groin, not that she was ashamed to show these parts to the people, but because it is not permitted for anyone to enter there completely naked, except for one wearing a loincloth around the groin. And so, in this costume, 9.21 having thrown herself down on the ground, she would lie on her back. And some servants, for whom this was the appointed task, would throw barley grains over her private parts, which the geese, who happened to have been prepared for this purpose, 9.22 would pick up one by one from there with their beaks and eat. And she would get up, not only without blushing, but she even seemed to take pride in this very act. For she was not only shameless, but also the greatest creator of shamelessness of all. 9.23 And often, having stripped with the actors, she would stand in the middle of the stage, arching her back and wiggling her backside, displaying with pride to both those who had experience of her and those who had not yet been with her the moves from her customary wrestling-school. 9.24 And she so licentiously abused her own body that she seemed to have her modesty not in the place of nature, like other women, but 9.25 in her face. So then, those who associated with her were immediately conspicuous from this very fact, that they performed their unions not according to the law of nature; and as many of the more respectable men as happened to meet her in the marketplace, turning away would hastily withdraw, lest, by touching any of the woman's garments, they might seem to have a share in this pollution. 9.26 For to those who saw her, and especially at the beginning of the day, she was an ill-omened sight. Towards her fellow actresses, however, she was always accustomed to act most savagely like a scorpion; for she was possessed by much envy. 9.27 And later to Hecebolus, a man of Tyre, who had taken up the governorship of Pentapolis, she followed to serve him in the most shameful ways, but having given some offence to the man, she was driven out from there as quickly as possible; for which reason it befell her to be in want of the necessities of life, which for the future she provided by practicing the lawlessness against her body to which she had been accustomed. 9.28 to
