a healer of treacherous eyes, and has used the hostile medicine, and shows the poison to be an antidote; to ears so-called, but deprived of hearing, He bestows their proper function. With a few loaves in the wilderness He satisfied many thousands, casting the five loaves into His hands as if seed into a field, and bringing upon them the blessing of His tongue like a cloud, He revealed the hands of the apostles as a thick and deep harvest and a full threshing-floor, a threshing-floor not in need of a winnowing-fan and separation, not of a mill and a kneading-trough and fire and an 75.1465 oven, but one gushing forth and welling up with the loaves themselves; and to speak in summary, He stopped flows of blood, willingly being despoiled of His healing; a young girl snatched away untimely by death and mourned by her own, He snatched back and gave her to those who begot her; another young man being escorted to the tomb, He brought back to life, and changed the mourning into joy, and turned the funeral dirge into the theme of wedding hymns; and the foul-smelling corpse He brought forth from the tomb after the fourth day from his death, and commanded the one who was bound to walk, and immediately death fled away, and the dead man ran, having been freed from decay, and having put off the stench of decay, and having escaped the gates of death, and not hindered from running by his bonds, and although deprived of seeing by the covering of his face, he ran unhindered to the one who called him, and recognizing the Master's voice. 26. That He voluntarily accepted the saving passions. Through these and other [exc. of the other previous] miracles, having confirmed the magnitude of the promises, and having trained the choir of the apostles in virtue, He runs as a volunteer to the passions that had been written; having often foretold these things to His disciples, and having rebuked Peter, who did not receive with pleasure the good news of the passions, and having shown that through these the salvation of the world is achieved; wherefore He also showed Himself to those who came, saying: "I am He whom you seek." And being accused, He did not speak against it, and being able to escape notice, He did not endure to do this; and this, having often escaped when He wished; but He both weeps for Jerusalem, as its unbelief was indeed drawing on destruction, and He condemns to utter destruction the long-renowned temple; He endures also being struck on the head [exc. cheek], being buffeted by one serving [exc. serving] a double slavery, being spat upon, reproached, tortured, scourged, and finally crucified, and taking robbers on either side as partners in the punishment, and being numbered with murderers and evildoers, and receiving vinegar and gall as fruit from the evil vineyard, and being crowned with thorns instead of vine-branches and clusters of grapes, and being mocked with a purple robe, and being struck with a reed, and having His side pierced with a lance, and finally being escorted to a tomb. 27. What is the cause of the Lord's sufferings. But He endured these things, contriving our salvation; for since those who had served sin were liable to the penalties of sin, He Himself, being free from sin, and having walked in all righteousness, accepted the punishment of sinners, through the cross, loosing the sentence of the old curse ("for Christ," it says, "has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us; for it is written: Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), and through the 75.1468 thorns, putting an end to Adam's punishments (for after the sin [exc. punishment], he heard: "Cursed is the ground in your
