they do participate, but in a subordinate manner, looking to the first orders and through them, as those primarily deemed worthy of imitating God, are led up to the attainable Godlike. Therefore, they attribute the aforesaid holy properties, in which the beings after them have come to participate through the first, to those very ones, after God, as to hierarchs. <4> So he who said these things said that that vision was shown to the theologian by one of the holy and blessed angels who preside over us, and by his illuminating guidance was uplifted to that sacred contemplation in which he saw the highest beings, so to speak in symbols, established under God and with God and around God, and the super-essential summit, ineffably set apart from all things and even from them, super-established in the midst of the transcendent powers. Therefore the theologian learned from what was seen that the Divine is incomparably super-established according to every super-essential transcendence over every visible and invisible power, and indeed that it is set apart from all things so as to be wholly unlike even the first of existing beings, and moreover, that it is the principle and fashioning cause of all things, and the unchangeable foundation of the indissoluble stability of existing things, from which comes both being and well-being, even to the transcendent powers themselves. Then he was initiated into the Godlike powers of the most holy Seraphim themselves, their sacred name signifying the fiery, about which we will speak a little later, as we are able to explain the upliftings of the fiery power to the Godlike, and of the sixfold sacred formation of the wings, the absolute and highest uplifting to the Divine in first, in middle, and in last conceptions. But seeing also their many feet and many faces, the sacred theologian, and that by the wings the vision beneath the feet and above the faces was veiled, and the perpetual motion in the middle wings, was led up to the intelligible knowledge of what was seen, the much-seeing and much-traversing power of the highest minds being revealed to him, and their sacred reverence, which they have super-cosmically against the rash and audacious and unattainable search into higher and deeper things, and of the unceasing and high-soaring perpetual motion in the symmetry of the God-imitating energies. But he was also initiated into that divine and most honored hymnody, the angel who shaped the vision imparting to the theologian, according to his capacity, his own sacred knowledge. He taught him this also, that purification for those who are in any way pure is the participation, as far as attainable, in the divine transparency [purity]. And this, being performed by the Thearchy itself through transcendent causes for all the sacred minds in super-essential hiddenness, is somehow more manifest to the powers around it, as the highest, and more reveals and imparts itself; but upon the second or the last or our own intellectual powers, as each is distant from it according to its godlikeness, so it contracts its manifest illumination toward the unified unknowing of its own hiddenness. And it illumines each of the second orders through the first, and if one must speak concisely, it is brought forth primarily from the hidden to the manifest through the first powers. The theologian, then, was taught this by the angel who enlightened him, that purification and all the divine energies, shining through the first beings, are transmitted to all the others according to the analogy of each to the divine participations. Wherefore also the fiery-purifying
