of his enemies; for as many nations as have come under his teaching, these, formerly being a portion of his enemies, after faith in him he prepared as suitable, as it were, for food for himself; refining and tracking down their fatness, that is, all that is material and earthly attached to them, and producing in them nourishing fruits through his own husbandry. And he accomplished these things with spiritual and rational arrows, having shot down with his bow the ancient ruler of the nations who was his enemy, that is, the devil. But the things from "he lay down, he rested as a lion," were said in almost the same words also by Jacob in the prophecies concerning Judah; and having set forth what sort of meaning these have according to what has occurred to us, we will not repeat it. And it is clear how we who bless Christ have been blessed by God; for even if they should abhor us just as the Egyptians did the ancient people of God, nevertheless this is fulfilled also upon us, "but as much as they afflicted them, so much more they multiplied, and grew very mighty indeed;" and it is clear in what way those who from the beginning 49 cursed him, through "crucify, crucify him," have received the curse. For the cross was a curse, according to, "cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree." But he, having endured their curse, has been highly exalted by the Father; but they, having been cursed by God himself, have received an enduring destruction for an age; which if anyone were to examine closely, he would see the greatness of God's power, still pursuing to this day those once cursed by him. These things relate to "and they that bless you are blessed, and they that curse you are also cursed." Ps. From the 4th prophecy of Balaam. 14. A star shall rise out of Jacob, and a man shall arise out of Israel, and shall crush the leaders of Moab, and shall plunder all the sons of Seth. The Word of God, having emptied himself and taken the form of a servant and been found in appearance as a man, arose not as a small star for Jacob, but out of Jacob; for beginning from the physical people of the circumcision, he shone upon all the nations; and having departed from them, he managed no small wars, cleansing the opposing powers, and the spiritual forces of wickedness, which having overcome he made a spoil for his own inheritance, taking back as many nations as were previously under them; concerning which the Father promised him, saying: "Ask of me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for your possession." 50 Ps. A prophet from your brothers, like me, the Lord your God will raise up for you; you will listen to him in all things, as you asked of the Lord your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, "We will not again hear the voice of the Lord our God, and we will not see this great fire any more, lest we sin." And the Lord said to me, "They have spoken well in all that they have said; I will raise up a prophet for them from among their brothers, like you; and I will put my word in his mouth, and he will speak to them whatever I command him. And the man who will not listen to all that the prophet will speak in my name, I will take vengeance on him." And whom else from Israel could one show to have been revealed as a prophet like Moses, that is, a lawgiver, for the human race, than only Jesus our Savior and Lord, who has been revealed as the lawgiver of the new covenant, of the life according to the gospel, to all the nations, according to the prophetic prayer in the psalm that said: "Appoint, O Lord, a lawgiver for them; let the nations know that they are men"? This one also delivered from the spiritual Egypt, and from the brickmaking in it, and from the bitter slavery under the spiritual Pharaoh, those who through him have come to the God of all; and simply all the things recorded as having been done physically by Moses, our Savior and Lord accomplished according to the spiritual law.
