lying in ruins; perhaps as a refutation of those now entrusted to govern the Churches, being unable to change even the small remnants of the impious heresies. But the god-opposing demon was unwilling to have his fill of the war against piety; but again he marshaled against the truth other heretics who held beliefs openly contrary to the aforementioned ones. I. -Concerning Ebion. Ebion was the leader of this phalanx, and so the Hebrews call the poor man. He said that there is one unbegotten God, similarly to us, and he showed Him to be the creator of the world; but he said that the Lord Jesus Christ was born of Joseph and Mary, being a man, but excelling others in virtue and purity; and they live according to the Mosaic law. They accept only the Gospel according to the Hebrews, and call the Apostle an apostate. Of these was Symmachus, who translated the Old Scripture from the Hebrew into the Greek tongue. There is another faction besides this one, having the same name; for these too are called Ebionites; in all other respects it agrees with the former, but it says that the Savior and Lord was born of a Virgin. 83.389 They use only the Gospel according to Matthew, and they honor the Sabbath according to the law of the Jews, but they consecrate the Lord's Day similarly to us. II. -Concerning the Nazoraeans. The Nazoraeans are Jews, honoring Christ as a just man, and using the so-called Gospel according to Peter. Eusebius said that these heresies arose while Domitian was reigning. Against these wrote Justin the philosopher and martyr, and Irenaeus the successor of the apostles, and Origen. III. -Concerning Cerinthus. At the same time Cerinthus also was the leader of another heresy. He, after spending a very long time in Egypt and being educated in the philosophical sciences, later arrived in Asia, and named his own disciples after his own name. He taught that there is one God of all, but that He is not the creator of the world, but certain separate powers, who are completely ignorant of Him. And Jesus, similarly to the Hebrews, he said was born according to nature from a man and a woman, from Joseph and Mary, and excelled in temperance, and righteousness, and the other virtues. But the Christ descended upon him from above in the form of a dove, and at that time proclaimed the unknown God, and performed the recorded miracles. But at the time of the passion, the Christ departed, while Jesus endured the suffering. He also fabricated certain revelations as if he himself had seen them, and composed teachings of certain threats, and said the kingdom of the Lord would be earthly; and he dreamt of eating and drinking, and imagined pleasures, and marriages, and sacrifices, and feasts, celebrated in Jerusalem, and that these things would be celebrated for a thousand years. For he thought the kingdom of the Lord would last so long. And against him not only the aforementioned wrote, but with them also Gaius, and Dionysius the bishop of the Alexandrians. Divine John the evangelist, as they say, seeing him bathing; for it happened that he himself also, on account of an illness, was using the bath; "Let us flee," he said, "from here, lest because of Cerinthus the bathhouse fall

Οὗτος καὶ ἀποκαλύψεις τινὰς ὡς αὐτὸς τεθεαμένος ἐπλάσατο, καὶ ἀπειλῶν τινων διδασκαλίας συνέθηκε, καὶ τοῦ Κυρίου τὴν βασιλείαν ἔφησεν ἐπίγειον ἔσεσθαι· καὶ βρῶσιν καὶ πόσιν ὠνειροπόλησε, καὶ φιληδονίας ἐφαντάσθη, καὶ γάμους, καὶ θυσίας, καὶ ἑορτὰς, ἐν Ἱερουσαλὴμ τελουμένας, καὶ ταῦτα ἐπὶ χιλίοις ἔτεσι τελεσθήσε σθαι. Τοσοῦτον γὰρ ᾤετο καθέξειν τοῦ Κυρίου τὴν βασιλείαν. Κατὰ τούτου δὲ οὐ μόνον οἱ προῤῥη θέντες συνέγραψαν, ἀλλὰ σὺν ἐκείνοις καὶ Γάϊος, καὶ ∆ιονύσιος ὁ τῆς Ἀλεξανδρέων ἐπίσκοπος.
