from her beauty, he says, they called the land of the same name. But their father, the Most High, having died in a battle with beasts, was deified, 1.10.16 to whom his children performed libations and sacrifices. And Ouranos, having taken over his father's rule, takes to wife his sister Ge, and has by her four children, Elos, who is also Kronos, and Baitylos, and Dagon, who is Siton, and Atlas. And from other wives Ouranos had many offspring. For this reason Ge, being angry and jealous, reviled Ouranos, so that they were 1.10.17 separated from each other. But Ouranos, having left her, by force, whenever he wished, would come upon her and have intercourse with her, and then depart again. And he tried to destroy the children from her, but Ge often defended herself, having gathered an alliance for herself. And Kronos, having come to manhood, using Hermes Trismegistus as a counselor and assistant—for he was his secretary— 1.10.18 defends himself against his father Ouranos, avenging his mother. And to Kronos are born children, Persephone and Athena. The first of these dies a virgin, but by the counsel of Athena and Hermes, Kronos fashioned a sickle and a spear of iron. Then Hermes, addressing the allies of Kronos with words of magic, created in them a desire for the battle against Ouranos on behalf of Ge. And so Kronos, engaging Ouranos in war, drove him from his rule and succeeded to the kingdom. And in the battle, the lovely concubine of Ouranos was also captured, being pregnant, 1.10.19 whom Kronos gives to Dagon in marriage. And she gives birth in his house to the child she carried in her womb from Ouranos, whom he called Demarous. After these things, Kronos surrounds his own dwelling with a wall and founds the first city, Byblos in Phoe1.10.20 nicia. After this, Kronos, suspecting his own brother Atlas, with the counsel of Hermes, cast him into the depths of the earth and buried him. About this time, the descendants of the Dioscouri, having constructed rafts and ships, sailed, and being cast ashore near Mount Casius, they consecrated a temple there. And the allies of Elos, who is Kronos, were called Eloim, as these 1.10.21 would be the so-called Kronians. And Kronos, having a son Sadidos, dispatched him with his own iron sword, because he had come to suspect him, and, becoming his son's own murderer, deprived him of his life; in the same way he also cut off the head of his own daughter, 1.10.22 so that all the gods were astounded at the mind of Kronos. And as time went on, Ouranos, being in exile, secretly sends his virgin daughter Astarte with two of her other sisters, Rhea and Dione, to kill Kronos by treachery. But Kronos captured them and made them his wedded wives, though they were sisters. 1.10.23 And when Ouranos learned of this, he sends against Kronos Heimarmene and Hora with other allies; and Kronos, having won these over, kept them with him. Furthermore, he says, the god Ouranos devised baitylia, contriving animated stones. And to Kronos by Astarte were born seven daughters, the Titani1.10.24 des or Artemides. And again to the same man by Rhea were born seven children, of whom the youngest was consecrated at his birth; and by Dione females, and by 1.10.25 Astarte again two males, Pothos and Eros. And Dagon, since he discovered grain and the plough, was called Zeus Arotrios. And to Sydykos, called the just, 1.10.26 one of the Titanides bore Asklepios. And in Peraea also were born to Kronos three children: Kronos, of the same name as his father, and Zeus Belos and Apollo. Contemporary with these are Pontos and Typhon and Nereus, 1.10.27 father of Pontos, and son of Belos. And from Pontos are born Sidon, who, from the excellence of her voice, was the first to invent the hymn of song, and Poseidon. And to Dema1.10.28 rous is born Melkathros, who is also Herakles. Then again Ouranos makes war on Pontos and, seceding, joins Demarous. And Demarous attacks Pontos, 1.10.29 but Pontos puts him to flight, and Demarous vowed a sacrifice for his escape. And in the thirty-second year of his power and reign, Elos, that is, Kronos, having ambushed his father Ouranos in a certain inland place and having got him into his power, cuts off his genitals
