denying to such people; but his genuine disciples will not allow the denial to proceed for him, or his greatest doctrine will fall and be destroyed, the contrivance of those who for this reason especially adhere 1.1.101 to the dogma. 20shameless20 δὲ τίς καὶ 20not cautious of human censure20, shall we examine from the things lived in his youth or from the things after these? But through both you would find the reproach of shamelessness coming back upon him. For neither his youth nor the life after this testifies 1.1.102 the same things for each. Let the speech-writer remind himself of the things in his homeland during the time of his youth and of the things lived by him in Constantinople, and let him hear from those who know 1.1.103 what sort of things they know about the one being slandered. But if anyone should wish to examine from his subsequent practices, let him say himself who is worthy of such a name: the one who unsparingly spent his paternal substance on the poor even before his priesthood, and especially in the time of famine, during which he was in charge of the church, while still serving as a priest in the order of presbyters, and after this sparing not even what was left, so that he himself might also boast the saying of the apostle that 'I ate no one's bread for free', or the one who has made the patronage of the dogma an occasion for revenues, the one who enters houses uninvited, not even concealing the unpleasantness from his affliction by his own conduct, nor considering the natural aversion of the healthy toward such people, the one who according to the old law, on account of the touch of his mark, is separated outside the camp of the inhabitants. 1.1.104 20Rash20 and again 20Insolent20 and 20a liar in both respects20 he is called by the one 20who patiently instructs in meekness those who oppose him20. For thus in his writing he puts on airs in his words about him, the one who lets loose no excess of bitterness in whatever he might have the strength to bring forth. And does the wise man not understand, that the accusation about small things from the slanderer provides a great defense 1.1.106 of the integrity of the one accused? For one who was moved to accusation would not, while sparing the greater things, have occupied his wickedness with the lesser things; concerning which he is also very boastful and making the offense terrible and gravely philosophizing about falsehood, judging it equally absurd, whether the statement is about greater or lesser things. 1.1.107 For he knows, according to the fathers of his heresy, I mean the scribes and Pharisees, how to strain out the gnat with precision, but to unsparingly swallow the crooked camel that is loaded with the weight of wickedness. to whom it was perhaps not unfitting to say, 'spare us such legislation in our way of life, which commands us to make no distinction in the charge of falsehood based on the smallness and greatness 1.1.108 of the matters. For Paul does not sin in the same way, lying and purifying himself in a Jewish manner for a time for those who are usefully deceived, as Judas does at the time of the betrayal, putting on a friendly and affable appearance. Joseph also lied in benevolence while testing his brothers, and this while swearing by the health of Pharaoh; but his brothers also lied against him, at first plotting death, and after this slavery, because of envy, and it is possible to say many such things; Sarah lies, blushing at her laughter; the serpent also lies, suggesting that man passes into a divine nature 1.1.109 from disobedience. great <therefore> of falsehood is the
