When the king's son heard these words, a light shone around his soul; and rising from his throne out of exceeding joy, and embracing Barlaam, he said: Perhaps this is, 98 as I conjecture, most honored of men, that priceless stone, which you rightly hold in mystery, not showing it to everyone who wishes, but to those whose soul's senses are sound. for behold, as I received these words in my ears, a most sweet light entered my heart, and that heavy veil of sorrow, which had for a long time already lain upon my heart, was quickly taken away. If, then, I conjecture well, tell me; but if you know something even better than what has been said, do not delay to reveal it to me at once. Then Barlaam answered again: Yea, verily, my lord and king, this is the great mystery hidden from the ages and from the generations, but in the last times made manifest to the race of men, the manifestation of which many prophets and righteous men, initiated in many parts and in many ways, long ago foretold by the grace of the divine Spirit; and having proclaimed it with a great voice, and all foreseeing the salvation that was to come, they longed to see it, and did not see it; but this last generation was deemed worthy to receive this salvation. He therefore who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned. And Joasaph said: I believe without hesitation all that has been said to you, and I glorify the God whom you proclaim. Only make these things clear to me unerringly, and teach me exactly what I must do; but also what baptism is, which you said believers must receive, make all things known to me in consequence thereof. 100 And he answered him: The grace of divine baptism is the root and sure foundation of this holy and blameless faith of the Christians, having a cleansing of all sins from birth, and a complete washing away of the pollutions that have entered from wickedness. For thus the Savior commanded to be born again of water and the Spirit, and to be restored to the ancient dignity, that is, through prayer and the saving invocation, when the Holy Spirit comes upon the water. We are baptized therefore, according to the word of the Lord, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit; and thus the grace of the Holy Spirit dwells in the soul of the one baptized, illuminating it and making it godlike, and renewing in it the 'according to the image and likeness'; and henceforth, having cast off all the old works of wickedness, we make a covenant with God for a second life and a beginning of a purer way of living, so that we may also be co-heirs with those who have been reborn to incorruption and have taken hold of eternal salvation. But without baptism it is not possible to attain that good hope, even if one should be more pious than all the pious. For thus said God the Word, who became man for the salvation of our race: Amen I say to you, unless you are born again of water and the Spirit, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Wherefore, above all, I ask you to receive the faith in your soul, and to approach baptism immediately with most fervent desire and in no way to post 102 pone it; for delay is dangerous, because the time of death is uncertain. And Joasaph said to him: And what is that good hope, which you said is not attained without baptism? And what is that which you call the kingdom of heaven? And from where have you heard the words of the incarnate God? And what is the uncertain time of death, about which much anxiety, having fallen upon my heart, in sorrows and
