leave the outer one with the enclosure. And after it is burned, having cleansed the place, build a holy church there. And he also said this: I adjure you before God, let it not be otherwise; for it is not I who speak, but Christ who speaks in me; and he said these things in the Syriac tongue. And when they all heard, they marveled and glorified God.
67 And this marvel also came to the ears of the holy bishop, and raising his hands to heaven he glorified God and said: Glory to you, holy Father, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to infants. He ordered the child and his mother, after the dismissal of the church, to be found in the episcopal residence, and separating the child, he said to the woman: I adjure you by the Son of the living God to say if your child spoke those things which he said about the Marneion at your suggestion or that of another, you knowing of it. But the woman, hearing this, said: I deliver myself to the fearful and terrible judgment seat of Christ, if I knew beforehand any of the things which my son uttered on this day. But if it seems good to you, behold, take the child and question him with threats, and if he has spoken these things at someone's suggestion, he will confess out of fear, but if he says nothing else, it is clear that he was inspired by the Holy Spirit. And the bishop, having heard the woman's words and praised them, said that she should be separated for a short while and the child brought in, and when the child was standing there, he said to him: Who suggested to you to utter in the church those things you spoke on account of the Marneion? But the child was silent. And the most holy bishop ordered a scourge to be brought and the child to be held up in order to frighten him. And the one holding the scourge cried out with a loud voice, saying: Who told you to speak? Say, so that you are not struck with the scourge. But the boy stood speechless, uttering nothing. Then we who were around him said the same things to him with threats; but he was unmoved.
68 Finally after everyone had stopped, opening his mouth, the boy said in the Greek dialect: Burn the inner temple to the ground; for many terrible things have happened in it, especially human sacrifices. And burn it in this manner. Bring wet pitch and sulfur and pig fat and mix the three and smear the bronze doors and set fire to them, and thus the whole temple will burn; for otherwise it is not possible for it to happen. But leave the outer one with the enclosure. And after it is burned, having cleansed the place, build a holy church there. I adjure you again before God, let it not be otherwise. For it is not I who speak, but Christ who is in me. And the most holy Porphyry and all those with him marveled, hearing the boldness of the child and how articulately he spoke. And having summoned his... son... the Greek tongue. And she affirmed with oaths that neither she nor her child knew Greek. Hearing this, the most holy Porphyry again glorified God, and taking out three coins he gave them to the woman. But the boy, seeing the coins in his mother's hand, cried out, saying in the Syriac tongue: Do not take it, mother, lest you too sell the gift of God for gold. And hearing this, we again marveled exceedingly. But the woman gave back the three coins, saying to the bishop: Pray for me and for my child and entrust us to God. And the holy bishop dismissed them in peace.
69 And at dawn, having gathered the pious clergy and the Christ-loving people, and also the admirable Cynegius and the rulers, he told them what the child had uttered on account of the Marneion. And hearing this, they marveled, and agreeing together they said that it should be burned thus, according to the word of the child. Therefore, bringing the wet pitch and the sulfur and the pig fat, and mixing the three, they smeared the
