and meditation would be for us a source of many good things. Assenting to and following these divine agreements, we have given ourselves, as to the Lord, to this system (for he says: He who has done it for one of the least of these my brothers, has done it for me), setting aside none of the established rules nor neglecting them, so that if ever one of the brothers should be seen either disregarding a dead body that is lying there and not reporting it to the one who holds first place in the brotherhood or at meals uttering what is not lawful and doing what is not holy, so that from this God is angered, he is to be subjected to a penalty by the one presiding, abstinence from wine for three days or the payment of one silver coin, and then thus to ask for improvement for the future. in addition to these things, we are also to observe this, whenever the common death befalls one of our brothers, all are to gather together in the same place and carry out his funeral and burial, so that from this also our good assembly may be praised, to the glory and praise of our God, the giver of great gifts. In faith and fear, therefore, having committed ourselves to this document, we have signed our names along with the amount, awaiting the reward for this our very small offering in the age to come from the rewarder, the just judge of all, Jesus Christ our Lord and God. 14 {1To Ignatius the abbot}1 Before all else, I pay the debt of salutation to your paternal holiness (would that I could), then so I will declare the reason for this letter. a rational sheep of ours, brother so-and-so, enticed by the manifold craftiness of the soul-destroying wolf, was pushed out of our humble flock and, as has become known to us, was received in the monastery of your holiness. And if, having received him, you immediately admonished him toward returning, pointing out the deceit and the ruin which he has suffered, then, having improved him, you sent him back to our lowliness, it is nothing improper, but even what is fitting for you, as we have been commanded by the saints. But since so much time has passed and there is no return, I wish to ask, in what manner does your God-lovingness retain my disciple. As if you were ignorant? But you ought, with full knowledge, to have sent away him whom you did not tonsure. As if you knew? The harm is great; for you know what the divine and great Basil legislates, that he who leaps away from the company of his own brothers is to be unreceived in all the brotherhoods. For how could the common life communities be sustained, if this main point were not observed before all else? For if among the schoolmasters of this world it is not possible to accept into their classes a boy who has been previously entrusted to another school or if someone does this, all of them, gathered together, subject him to penalties of a fine, how much more so among us, most holy father, who preside over the church of God and are leaders of souls in imitation of our first teacher and shepherd, Jesus Christ? I know, therefore, that you are filled with wisdom and knowledge, but I beg you to recognize the impropriety of what is being done, and especially you yourself, who are pre-eminent among the others and abound in a holy brotherhood; or do you not know, most holy one, that it is harmful even to your own flock to join to it a sheep belonging to another master? Since, therefore, the evil is admittedly so great, we entreat, when you receive our humble letter, to hand him over to our brothers who have been sent for this very purpose, so that they may lead him to his own flock, along with the things of the church which he has appropriated. But if the brother is disobedient, you should be willing to cast him out of your holy flock at once. But if, which we do not suppose, after this knowledge you wish to retain him, let your holiness know that he is bound by us, not without reason, but even very properly, or rather by the Holy Trinity and every priestly ordinance, so that he is to be without communion of the divine gifts, since he is also without a share of the external foods, until, having turned back again, he is settled in
