, that they loved him and kept his commandments, how is it not consistent for them to confess that he himself immediately fulfilled the promise which he had made to them, having asked the Father and sent another Paraclete to them; for if, when they not only loved him but also chose to die for him, he had not sent them the Paraclete as he promised, according to the Phrygian impiety, he will be found false in his promises. But if, being truth, he sent them the Holy Spirit, they wander in vain, imagining and asserting that the Paraclete was sent through Montanus and Priscilla some two hundred and thirty years after the apostolic grace had come into being. 261 Jo 14, 15-16 From the fact that the apostles did all the wills of God and died for him, it is clear that they kept his commandments. Therefore, they were immediately deemed worthy also of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and the heresy of the Phrygians is proven false, who say that after 230 years the Paraclete was sent through Montanus and Priscilla and Maximilla. From what he says about asking the Father to send another Paraclete, he clearly presents the three persons of the one Trinity; for no one says that one asks himself and sends himself, which is what those who confuse the hypostases say. 262 Jo 14, 17 Here he calls "world" the worldly people who believe nothing exists beyond what is seen. For this reason, they were not able to receive the Spirit of truth, which is by nature incorporeal and cannot be seen by them. But the Lord, wishing to show that not all are to be deemed worthy of such things, makes clear through his answer that only those who keep his commandments will appear worthy both of his manifestation and of the Father's love. But he who does not believe nor keep his words has become completely alien to his love. And by saying that the word of his teaching is not his own but the Father's who sent him, he clearly showed from this also the difference of the persons. 269 Jo 14, 23 Through what he says, he signifies that not all are deemed worthy of the things that were said, but those who keep his commandments, which he delivered, having taught through himself. And he promises the indwelling in the faithful by speaking in the plural, "we will come," in order to refute the heresy of Sabellius which says the Father and the Son are one. 270 Jo 14, 24 He who disbelieves his words is alien to his love. And by attributing the whole of the teaching to the Father, he presents the distinct subsistence of the hypostases, through what he says about the one who sent and the one who was sent. 271 Jo 14, 26 For it was possible even for those born at any time after this to be taught by the Paraclete, but it is utterly impossible for those who had not previously learned from the Lord to be reminded by him.
