bracelets, and rings, and armlets, and braided chains. For the leaders of the people in Christ and the eminent often surpass the evangelical commands in their accomplishments, practicing on their own initiative the unlegislated virginity, and other such things. For Paul also, though commanded by the Gospel to be supported, was supported by his own hands. Through the enumerated golden vessels, the various forms of precious and most brilliant virtue are signified. All these, he says, were brought into the tent of God for a memorial of them. For such accomplishments of the saints are treasured up in the Church as an adornment, for a memorial of those who accomplished them. But also when the tent was first being constructed, God commanded the people to be numbered; and each male from twenty years and upward to bring to God the half-shekel. But the rulers on their own and from themselves brought the precious stones, and the oil of anointing, and the composition of the incense. The precious stones, then, are the chosen leaders themselves of the Churches of Christ, because of what is solid and pure and brilliant and most different from others; concerning whom it was said by the prophet, that Stones are rolled upon the earth. And they are also both royal and priestly oil, not only pouring [alt. anointing] upon kings and priests, but also enriching souls with all-wise teachings, and making them cheerful. And they are also incense because of the sweet fragrance of their virtues; and a composition, as spreading a sweet fragrance from both practice and contemplation. Concerning those of twenty years and upward, we have spoken before in the preceding sections. 77.1232 Being herdsmen, those of the tribe of Reuben, and those of the tribe of Gad, when they saw a land good for herding, before the Jordan, they were taken by it and besought Moses, to receive it for an inheritance. But when Moses was angry and reproached them, they promised that if they should receive this land, they would leave their own baggage upon it; but they themselves would cross over armed and fight with the people; yet they would not seek another inheritance. Such in character are those who possess much and desire earthly wealth. For directing their whole mind to this, they shrink from the struggles for virtue, and the hardships for the sake of inheriting the promised goods. But when the divine law reproaches them, and threatens them with anger, they with difficulty cross over into battle array, and assist the valiant against the invisible enemies, and aid the Churches that are warred against. But they do not inherit together with these, as they preferred the inheritance before the Jordan, as has been shown; I mean the enjoyment that lies beside the flowing and unstable life, for the sake of cattle, and women, and children, and homesteads, having admitted hesitation toward the noblest things. OF THE BOOK OF DEUTERONOMY. The law commanded Hebrew male and female slaves to serve for six years, and in the seventh to be set free; but foreigners to serve forever, by which the fiftieth year is signified. For every practical person, reason and thought labor in the manner of a male and female slave of the same race, both devising and creating the modes of action according to virtue, and setting themselves against the opposing spirits of wickedness in practice, having fulfilled the practical philosophy, which the number six of the years has shown. For in six days God created the world, with passionlessness coming into being. which the seventh year signifies. Free, therefore, from the
