he teaches in a psalm: "The voice of the Lord is upon the waters, the God of glory has thundered; the Lord is upon many waters;" and 39.684 in the 76th psalm." The voice of your thunder was in the wheel. Your lightnings lit up the world; the earth saw and was shaken." For through the waters it signifies baptism, in which there is, from the priests, as the same one sings in a psalm, "much work;" and through the thunder it alludes to the grace of baptism that has reached everywhere and was received with fear; and through the wheel, the unstable and strange life; and through the lightnings, the beauties according to God of those who are illuminated; and through the shaking of the earth it declares the moving with eagerness of humanity towards the knowledge of God. And when the Master was baptized in the economy, in order to put to death the dragon, who received the Jordan in his mouth upon the waters, as Job recounts enigmatically, and to wipe away our filth, and to forgive the old sin, and to make us tread upon serpents and scorpions, and upon all the power of the enemy, and at the same time also to teach all that regeneration is salvation for men; the Holy Spirit was present, as was the Father. For the one from the heavens testified to the 39.685 genuineness of his own offspring; but the Holy Spirit, when the heavens were opened to him, as to a king and one who is above the nature of angels, having come down, remained upon the Son of God. For it says: "Behold, the heavens were opened, and I saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove." Understand, then, what the Holy Spirit is, seeing that it makes us, his own temple, to be seated with, and glorified with, and to reign with the most high God, and when it remains upon the only-begotten God; and if heretics piously say that it is not seated with, and worshipped with, and does not reign with God the Father. But let the Holy Spirit of God not be thought of as being seated with, and glorified with, and reigning with God in the same way as us, who are created, and in such nakedness of good works hope for such great things; but as his Spirit, and by nature God and King and eternally seated with, and being full of immaculate glory. For the created, by grace after the resurrection, will be deemed worthy of these things, enjoying the good things of the kingdom, but not being kings. For Scripture knows one glory of the sun, and another of the moon and stars; and of these again a different glory. "For star," it says, "differs from star in glory." And the eye of the body is more honorable than the other members; yet it too is body; so that we who have been renewed enjoy so much of the divine intimacy as the power of our nature allows, as they say. How could the mortal race equal God. And Peter, extolling baptism, since the Holy Spirit who re-creates us is God, proclaimed a universal proclamation through his first Epistle, declaring this: "Having been born again, not of 39.688 corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the living and abiding word of God." For he feared the one who commanded in the Gospel according to Mark: "Go into all the world, and preach the Gospel to every creature. He who has believed and has been baptized will be saved; but he who has disbelieved will be condemned." And what is the proclamation? "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." which Paul also, observing, wrote: "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all." Which spiritual communion the Catholic writings also previously named thus: "That you may become partakers of the divine nature." And who are the unbelieving, and for this reason condemned? Those who do not keep this equality of honor of the Holy Trinity; to whom he also again commanded through Paul in the epistle to the Galatians: "There are some who trouble you, wishing to pervert the Gospel of Christ; but even if an angel from heaven you
